Can any one help me please ? I have a 1994 Prelude 2.0i Auto which developed a problem today without any warning. The ignition switch turns on ok..... everything powers up, all dash lights etc. turn the key to the engine start position and engine fires up as usual first time............. when you then let go of the key to return to normal running position ...... all the dashboard lights go out and the engine stops ................... only way I can keep it running is to start engine and then keep rotational pressure on the key but turn it back only part of the way to stop the starter motor engaging. The car will then run normally but the minute you release the key all the dash lights go out and the engine stops.... can anyone tell me if this an ignition switch problem or an ignition relay problem??? any help would be appreciated. I have a 51 plate ford mondeo tddi, and just today i noticed that when i put the air vent on in the car, i got a smell of burning/exhaust fume smell coming into the car. I have owned the car for since 2002 and never had this problem before. Not sure what this is, any ideas?

Hi Peter
Thanks for the post, is a head gasket very expensive on a TDDI? Had 3 on my Fiat Punto which cost about £400 each, can't afford an expensive job on the car at the moment.

I will have the car checked out at Ford, but hoping that it is the others possibilities you mention as they don't sound as expensive.

Thanks

Could it be a dead spot/s in the starter motor, due to worn armature?

Now that GM have shown faith in the Ellesmere Port plant which is quite local to me, I feel bound to consider Astra for one of our cars early next year, when I had been thinking about Golf (although I don't like VAG UK or its dealers) or maybe Focus.

Has anybody here compared the new Astra to its obvious rivals, and what did they think?

All things being more or less equal, I would like to buy British, but not if I'm going to end up kicking myself (as my neighbour did many years ago when he bought his wife a Metro!). Read more

I have a 2002 astra 1.7 diesel. It hasn't been bad except for a lot of rust. The bonnet had to be replaced with a new one about 4 years ago, fitted and sprayed professionally. Even this is showing rusting now.

It passed it's last MOT but with a lot of advisories, including leaking dampers and brakes. The mileage is 113K and the car has been regularly and well serviced. When I change cars it won't be for another Vauxhall, even if new ones do no drip with Waxoil.

i've driven a few of these mondeos, and really like the idea of something with that kind of pull at those kind of running costs.

however, i've also read a multitude of horror stories online regarding dmf problems and injectors packing in. what kind of mileage are we talking about before these problems manifest? what steps (if any) can i take to avoid them?

and are we talking about a high percentage of cars with these issues, or have i got a really unrealistic impression from the internet?

if the risks are high, what would you recommend i look for instead about the same size / economy ?

thanks for any thoughts. Read more

...No, it is: if you don't do enough miles IN 5 YEARS TIME, don't buy a diesel with DPF. ....

It's not quantity of miles that matters, it's 'quality'.

A DPF car could do only a couple of hundred miles a month provided some of those miles were done with enough revs to cause regeneration.

No car likes being stood idle, but Ford DPFs are no bother at all if used correctly.

I've had no problems with mine, can't even tell when it's regenerating.

I've recently made a claim for the theft of my car. It was recovered but written off. Prior to that I had 8 years no claims but I assume from the point of insurance companies this is 6 years? ie. the maximum 65%. So if I've made 1 claim would 2 years get deducted off so its 4 years ncb I have to state when getting quotes? I also made a no fault claim from a third party insurer (declared) so this does't affect my ncb. Read more

Just had a call from my broker who tell me that my usual insurer - Corinth - is no longer in the business due to significant losses. The best they could quote me was almost double last years price. I went to M&S who did it for almost same price as last year. And that was after one claim in an otherwise claim-free 20 year history (but 3 points last year!)

The central locking on my V/99 Focus LX stopped working so I replaced the infamous Fuse #63 (central locking fuse) behind the glove box... only for it to blow again after a few happy minutes of locking and unlocking :o(

Before I go out and buy another bunch of 20A fuses is there anything I can do to stop them blowing? I read somewhere that I could disconnect each door until I find the offending motor but can't find instructions on how to do this. If you've done it how easy is it? Best left to an auto electrician?

Strangely, while it was working briefly the motors in all the doors were very quiet; previously they were a bit whirring...

If you open the door and underneeth the hinge there should be a rubber gaiter. I remember on the Escorts you used to be able to prise back the gaiter and disconnect the plug that used to go inside the door - whether you can do this on the Focus I dont know.

Looking at it logically, it seems like one of the soleniods may have been noisey due to wear and could have become defective upon the fuse blowing the first time hence the reason its quieter now may be because one of the locks is not operating. When you replace the fuse see if all the doors are locked upon locking and unlocked upon unlocking.

Hi, i have a renault scenic 1.9dci 2005. Have recently had a new recon engine fitted. Recently noticed that engine cooling fan is acting erratic, coming on too early, and then going off and on, off and on very quickly. also, when this happens my headlights dip quite noticably to the point where a car in front might think i am flashing at them. Has anyone any ideas to what the problem might be? Read more

did you ever cure this, as my 54 1.5dci is doing the exact same thing

Insurance renewal came through the other day, with one of the majors - just over £300, including roadside and European cover, which I was reasonably happy with, especially having had a write-off this year which was dealt with easily.

Did my usual quick compare using a few search engines and while my quote was about the mark, there was one at nearly £100 lower - albeit without the extra cover above.

So I called them, not really with a view to cancelling - but just to see if there was "anything they could do". I went through to the cancellations number.

Sure enough, I was offered £30 off, or a free MOT voucher, or £180 hotel voucher. I took the MOT.

If you normally buy TPF&T try Comprehensive at the same time!

My 2nd car Group 15 (11 yrs old) Comp policy was £125 with a £250 excess

TPF&T with the same details/same company was £170!!

I appreciate that if the car is in an accident I will get buttons for the car but the Comp policy covers windscreen damage with a £50 excess - it was nigh on £400 to replace 12/15 mths ago - about half the value of the car.

"flooring the policewoman"

Having seen the whole incident on a special Traffic Cops edition and viewing the footage above, the policewoman was not floored by the woman in red. The police woman slips on the foil blanket that was put over the woman in red after she was knocked down and temporarily unconsious. She then came round and jumped up as if she was on some kind of substance. But in my view she did not hit the police woman to the ground. Though both the actions of these two women was shocking and deserving of punishment.
