hi,
shopping around for something to replace my now-way-too-small polo (two kids and a tendency to hump around large amounts of music gear), i had been set on a mondeo hatch for my family's needs - space / comfort / good to drive, but have been somewhat put off by the tdci horror stories, and the (comparatively) high running costs of a petrol model.
i've now seen a 81k miles 1.6 focus estate (53 plate) for £2,900. i haven't driven one, but opportunities for that are limited as i live in orkney and as far as i'm aware there is no estate version for sale at any of the dealers up here at the moment. the one i've seen is in aberdeenshire, so no quick journey to view (£150 flight plus £40 taxi), but i wondered if i may ask a few questions that might save me a trip if a few key areas aren't what i'm looking for;
1) are these generally reliable?
2) how does the rear legroom compare to a mondeo?
3) how does it handle? is this in the same ballpark as a mondeo?
many thanks

Re. the petrol Focus cambelt - the interval is indeed 10 years / 100k, but I think originally it was specified as 80k. At any rate, mine went at 92k (1.6 Zetec, 99 T plate), at the end of a long journey down the A1, and I was very lucky it didn't take the engine with it. Apparently not uncommon for these to go prematurely, so getting it changed a while before the 100k might be a safe option given the potential fall-out!
wont rev past 3,500 rpm. Does anyone have any ideas??? cheers

Can anyone suggest how I can quieten the ancilliary drive belt on my diesel A4 please.
It has gradually got more and more squeaky over the last few months, and low it squeaks even after a significant drive, except for just first thin on a damp morning.
It is not slipping, it is just making a rubbery squeak at tickover. When I sprayed it with V-belt spray it went silent for a while, but the squeaking came back after a few days. Read more
Not a good idea. Silicone grease migrates everywhere and is impossible to get off. The idea of a belt drive is to provide grip between the pulleys and the belt. Lubricant is the last thing you need.
I hope there is enough friction reserve to provide consistent drive to the PAS pump when making a manoevre on a wet day with the alternator on full load.

I happened to spin my front wheels accidently in the rain when exiting a side turning and apart from going nowhere the driving wheels were just banging?? and felt terrible. The whole car shook and it felt like something was broken. I have checked everything seems ok and the car drives fine. Any ideas? Could one of my wheels be buckled, seems strange as the ride is fine? Tyres are good brand (Goodyear) and whilst needing imminent replacement they are not down to the TWI.
The car hasnt got traction/stability control btw. Read more
I've noticed this 'front-drive-axle-tramp' now I'm driving a fwd car after a few years in rwd. Not nice at all.
I think the problem is that when I used to drive fwd, they didn't have so much power - now they have too much power for their own good. 'Power corrupts' etc.
hello i started doing my cambelt on my 2001 passat 1.9 tdi pd 130. everything was going ok till i came to setting the tension. i have a guide from autodata but its not very clear about setting it, ie using a 4mm drill bit.

A few weeks ago i asked for help in finding a suitable incar camera following an accident I experienced whilst stationary & a young girls flying along miss judging a gap. Disappointed by the ins companies decision to take a 50/50 approach due to no witnesses I decided I am not going to get caught again. I purchased a road hawk from www.roadhawk.co.uk/
Service was excellent & received product next day, fitting was fine, took a little while to hide all the cabling but thats all hidden now.
Drove 350 miles on Saturday & checked all the stored files today. Quality very good even the night driving came out in an acceptable state.
Almost needed it as a car pulled out a side turning without looking & whilst my wife was driving she missed the car by about 4 ft!.
Thank you for the help that was offered & I shall now purchase another for my daughter.

Dave i agree. i have nothing to hide about speeding or driving but obviously fullaflava does.
Wait till he gets caught with his pants down when he's involved in a prang & no witnesses!
Who will be smiling then?
Does anyone watch it???
This week they stopped a guy in a Saab with no insurance, he said it was a mistake and he had another car with insurance that allowed him to drive any car
Oh no said the cop, it only allows you to drive if the car your driving also has insurance.
Does that make scence?
He got £200 fine and 6 points Read more
But the snag would be that the instant you got out of the car ie
ceased "driving" it it would be uninsured?
No, because you're still "using" the vehicle.
There is a legal case which sets a precedent on this (driver stopped at a shop to buy a newspaper or something like that) but I can't for the life of me find it.
