"The 33-year-old world number one pulled out of his driveway, struck a fire hydrant, then drove into a tree at his neighbour's property, said the Florida Highway Patrol.
Woods was treated in hospital for facial lacerations and later discharged, said Gary Bruhn, Mayor of Windermere, Florida.
"Airbags typically do not deploy if a vehicle is travelling at less than 33mph,
A spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol said the golfing superstar was driving a 2009 Cadillac sport utility vehicle and the crash was not alcohol-related."

Not yet - and I bet DD or PU beat me to it anyway.
|
Now will I take my newest ball
And whack it out to sea;
And hire a boat and bring it back
And give it one colossal whack
And hole it out in three.
Or four, or nine or twenty-five,
It matters not; to be alive
At Mullion in the summertime
At Mullion in the silly time
Is good enough for me...
(or words to that effect. From memory. Can't remember who it's by. Hate golf but like verse).

Lud, is/was Lobby any relation of yours? www.lobbylud.com/page6.htm

In most of the news reports it has been suggested that this was a low speed crash due to no air-bag deployment. The trigger speed was quoted to be 33MPH. This is totally wrong, the trigger speed is probably half of that. Believe me, if you hit anything at 33MPH you are going to need all the help you can get.

Are 'bags on American cars set differently?
I know at one time they were a different size because few Americans wore seatbelts.
|
They were a bigger size because Americans are a bigger size! More to stop!

I can't check it out as I'm at work at the moment Lud but sounds almost certainly John Betjeman to me , the connection with Mullion in Cornwall particularly resonates although nothing coming up when I google.....
I studied his work for ' A ' Level many moons ago.......he is still a favourite of mine and I have his collected works in my library.
Not looked at them for a while though so will check it out tonight.

Mr Google helps out here, Lud -
A.P. Herbert, the great literary humorist dedicated a poem to the course expressing both the joy and potential frustration:
"Go on old ball, we are but two
We may be down in three,
Or nine or ten or twenty-five
It matters not! To be alive at Mullion in the summer time
Is good enough for me."

If you go down to T. Woods today you're sure of a big bag size....
|
|
US airbags and EU bags are totally different.US bags are huge and are designed to protect occupants wearing lap belts or no belts.EU bags are much smaller and are designed only to protect small parts of the body.
|
With respect JC2, I don't regard my head and torso as "small parts" of my body. They are my body!

There are reports that his wife "freed" him from the car with a golf club!
Hmmm...was that the same one she was chasing him with when he was fleeing!
|
To change the subject slightly, if Woods was driving a Cadillac Escalade, even quite slowly, the fire hydrant may well have suffered a lot of damage. They are beefy monsters of things that must weigh a couple of tons at least, although their styling has a curiously fragile, effete look that I have noticed in other contemporary American cars (am I alone in making this aesthetic judgement?)
There's one that lives not a mile from here. I think I know whose it is too.

I heard reports of a "domestic " too.

I heard that he had scratches to his face. Well, he is "Tiger" Woods Good job his name wasn't "Bear" Woods, 'cos you know what bears do in the woods don't you?
|
Things we still haven't been told:
1. Did the hydrant, when struck, gush millions of gallons of water (as they always do in the cartoons)?
2. Are Escalade drivers ever actually able to see anything out of the darn car?
3. Having hit a fire hydrant and a tree, will we now see him drive down steps, out to sea and onto the top of a condemned block of flats, a la Clarkson in a Toyota?
4. Why DO they call those things "sports" "utility" anyway? I'd ask for my money back or try to sue someone for zillions of dollars for such a misdescription...

First time this year Woods has driven under 300 yards. :)
|
FHP spokesman Kim Montes ....confirmed both rear passenger windows of the golfer's luxury SUV had been smashed out. but said it has not been determined how it happened.
The damage to the vehicle lends itself to the scenario presented by celebrity website TMZ.com.
The respected site claimed Nordegren was chasing Woods, 33, down the driveway swinging one of his clubs after a row over report that the golf great had cheated on her.
Montes said the front left side of the vehicle struck the fire hydrant while the right front side hit the tree. The damage is estimated at up to £5,000.
A spokeswoman for FHP says the golf star is not obligated to talk about what is considered a minor accident.
But if police believe Woods was the victim of an assault they are able to file domestic battery charges even if he does not want to take the matter further.
Under Florida Law police have the power to intervene in a domestic violence case and bring charges regardless of what the two people involved want to do.
I wonder what the insurance man will make of any claim for vehicle damage?
I wonder what answers will be on claims form or will the caddy just be scrapped so no questions or answers required?

I said that further up the thread - why else would he be leaving home at 2.30 AM with his missus on hand to "rescue" him with golf club!
I wonder what the insurance man will make of any claim for vehicle damage?
He's the highest paid sports star in the world. I doubt the insurance will be a problem. The car is probably provided free by Cadillac anyway.

I'd have paid good money to witness that, c/w comedy fire hydrant effects.

I would vote that as a hole in one so I guess you pay up.
I know little about golf so can you tell me what stance she would adopt and what sort of carry through to avoid the rough or out of bounds

I would imagine her pose would be more like that of a baseball player than a golfer!

you mean grip and stance - not pose.

A quote from his web site so it must be true
"As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I'm pretty sore.
This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again."
This is the very start of his statement so the words can only apply to the car accident.
Let us into the secret. How do you make sure you will never hit a fire hydrant or a tree ?
With all $$$ available plus the best legal bods and several days to prepare a smooth PR statement if this is the best they can do then I would want my money back.
|
Typical golfer screws up and takes it out on the caddy.

What exactly is a Phantom driver action? Is that when the driver has walked away from the accident leaving the car behind, or won't admit to have been driving?
|
Veery interesting!
So it was not two dings but four.
A sod got involved too. $200 for it and the tree.
How does that paperwork compare with the UK paperwork?
