I have the above van for work, bout 4 weeks ago the clutch failed & was recovered to the main dealer who done a new clutch, cam belt & front wishbones. The works took bout 4 weeks, I collected the van & only made it 10 miles and the gear linkage came off, stuck in 6th gear but when I reved to move the engine runaway, rev counter went off the scale lots of smoke! kept on running even with keys out! I tried to stall engine but it just destroyed my new clutch, van was recovered again & the tech said it had been overfilled with oil. Now vauxhall have replaced the clutch plate & told me the engine is perfect no work required, What do u think? Thanx for any replys Read more

I seem to remember reading a few months ago a post from Number Cruncher discussing the risks of driving a car with a faulty ABS controller. Specifically, the risk was that of locking the rear wheels and losing control of the car.

I used to have a Citroen Xsara (no ABS), which once, under heavy braking, violently went into a skid/slide. I released the brakes and corrected the skid, and stopped safely, but was a bit shaken up. I put it down to oil or diesel on the road and thought nothing of it.

Anyway, a similar thing happened to my sister (she owns the car now), and it's taken me a while to put two and two together. At every MOT the tester told me that the brake distribution valve had seized, but he'd managed to free it off.

Is it possible that a failure of this valve led to the locking of the rear wheels, and the car going into a slide? It's the coupe version and due to the lightness of the back looks prone to oversteering anyway.

Just wondering whether it's worth getting this valve changed if there's a chance it could do it again.

Cheers,

Dave. Read more

I wonder if it has been a problem for a long time, I owned one of those Xsara coupes for about 60k miles and never once had anything like oversteer, even when driven 'enthusiastically'. Understeer yes, or a neutral slide, but not even in the wet....

Sounds like it needs doing ASAP.

there is not much room either side here....even allowing for the camera angle. The Zebra crossing poles aren't far off either.

Yes. Pressure regulator is part of the pump :(

This is quite embarrassing to relate, but it may save someone suffering the same problem.

Yesterday, I went out to the car (2000 Mondeo) and unlocked it by the driver's door. Opened the rear hatch, dropped something in, closed hatch. When I attempted to start it, it fired momentarily, then refused several attempts to start.

Spent about 30 minutes checking under the bonnet, checking the fuel cutoff hadn't tripped (I noticed the absence of pump noise when switching on ignition). Just on the point of phoning for a taxi when the brainwave arrived.

Went out and 'double - locked' it (usually just normal lock), unlocked it, and it started as normal. Don't know what upset it, but that might ring some bells with you one day with similar sysmptoms.

Just after I bought my current Almera, I took daughter and SIL to the shops. SIL had a hangover from previous night and wanted to sleep it off while we went shopping. I plip locked the car.

SIL woke up, and couldn't get out! All electric windows - dead locking (?).

Thankfully the sun wasn't shining, his bladder held the strain and the car didn't catch fire (although the last two would have been mutually compatible).

When changeing up, from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th there is a strange and noticeable oo! sound. This can only be heard when traveling on a reasonably quiet surface. Although this is mildely amusing, as we are coming to the end of the 3 yr. warranty it would be nice to know if this is a precurser to a future problem, ie, gearbox, clutch, flywheel !!!
This phenominan only started recently at about 20K miles. Read more

Clutch release bearing? I suggest you get it to your nearest Toyota dealer before the warranty expires and take someone from the service department out in it to demonstrate the noise.
If you can "play a tune" by depressing the clutch pedal whilst you hear the noise then there is a strong probability it is the release bearing on its way out.

Hi,

I borrowed a friends car to go to a wedding recently - on my way back I was stopped at lights and a cyclist slammed into the side of the car - has caused a dent in the back of the wing mirror (needs to be replaced) - a 30 cm scratch on the passenger door and a large scuff/chunk of paint removed over the wheel.

I live in North London (N7) and have no idea of where to go to get this fixed- and am really trying to avoid a huge bill!

Can anyone advise me on how much this may cost/ a good body shop I can go to- that won't rip me off?

Thanks

...You guys should try to cycle a bit , reduce your car costs , increase fitness , save time etc etc etc - let's see how you feel then about bike boxes being blocked ?....

I have cycled a bit, but not enough to come up against this 'bike boxes blocked' problem.

Or perhaps I have, but not thought much of it.

If someone deliberately damaged my property, I would try to damage theirs, or them.

The circumstances are irrelevant.

I'm the least violent person I know, but I have no faith in the police/authorities' interest/ability to deal with minor matters to my own satisfaction, so any redress has to be at my own hands.

This is not a criticism of the police/authorities, just an observation.

Such resources as are available tend to be diverted towards more serious matters, which is as it should be.

I'm heading to a bmw auction in Bridgwater next week by BCA and the cars up for sale are amazing. I received the list via email and they are all fairly used cars with low mileages, log books, and all that stuff. I want to buy a 1 series and the options are 116i, 118d, 118i and 120d

Does anyone know what price these usually start at and sell for at auctions??? and any other sort of advice will be appreciated.

1-Series usually get about CAP guide price, more if they have nice options.

Don't expect any massive bargains. Once you've paid buyers fees and accounted for any remedial work reckon on about £750-£1000 less than an independent dealer might charge and about £2000 less than a BMW main dealer.

Right then who can tell me the current wherabouts of the BRM V16 F1 racing car , having just come back from the 40th Gold Cup meeting at Oulton park I well recall Jackie Stewart demo laps and the restart at the bottom of Clay Hill in the summer of 1967.

What a car what a great sound from the engine!

So where is this car now - surely not locked up in a museum / private collection?

Anyone know any details /

Hi everyone,

After a pretty long shift at work yeaterday I got into my old Pug and drove the short 14 miles home, all motorway apart from first 2 miles and last 2 miles...

When i came off the motorway up a slip road and stopped at the traffic lights at the end Three warning lights came on together?

TEMP STOP OIL

Now my pug is automatic so when i took my foot of the break when the lights changed the warning lights went off again... ?

No further problems when driving... Unless i became stationary at t.lights. I finally pulled onto my drive at home and the lights came back on, placed into PARK... lights on... placed into R, 4, 3,2,1 - 1,2,3,4 R(No letter D on my auto lol) and lights went off?

So basically I discovered that when Im moving or the engine was under load (I think the experts call it this, lol) everything was fine, when in PARK or stationary with my foot on break, the three lights were all on together?

Went out this morning to check oil and there is plenty in, Automatic transmission fluid is same, water is OK so I took it for a short drive and nothing, no lights on?

Any ideas? I have tried looking on google for "warning lights on peugeot 205" but nothing really and my owners hand book is no help.

Take care.

Chris.

At the very best a filter and oil change with the CORRECT grade of oil might resolve this

at worst there might be a problem with the oil pump or you have blocked channels somewhere

(that is of course that low oil pressure IS the problem, advise i have given is just based past experience, and not nessarly match your problem)
