Hi,
I borrowed a friends car to go to a wedding recently - on my way back I was stopped at lights and a cyclist slammed into the side of the car - has caused a dent in the back of the wing mirror (needs to be replaced) - a 30 cm scratch on the passenger door and a large scuff/chunk of paint removed over the wheel.
I live in North London (N7) and have no idea of where to go to get this fixed- and am really trying to avoid a huge bill!
Can anyone advise me on how much this may cost/ a good body shop I can go to- that won't rip me off?
Thanks
A

Did you get the details of the cyclist? If you were stopped, and he hit you, can't you make an insurance claim with your insurers making a recovery through his home insurance (assuming he has some)?

Try www.motorindustrycodes.co.uk/ to search for a good garage near you to repair.
They're part of a scheme that makes them more accountable so less likely to 'rip you off'
Good luck!

Hi,
I don't want to ask my friend to claim from her insurance, as it would effect her premium. She had a recent claim for a break in.
The cyclist did not stop- she cycled through a red light to get away!
Thanks

Oh, what a lovely person she must be. Just like the cyclist that knocked me to the ground when I was stood still on a pavement in central Cardiff in July. Still injured :(. Good luck with the repairs!!

not that it excuses such behaviour, but you weren't blocking off a cycle box at a junction ?
My militant cycling friend will kick off door mirrors on such miscreant's cars and ride on without the slightest pang. I don't condone criminal damage but some drivers are very self absorbed

what if your militant friend meets a motorist that will run the gauntlet and run the cyclist over till his pips squeak
glad militant isnt a friend of mine so if im a tourist who misreads signals for a second is seen as some idiot

Ah, one of the joys of living in the frozen North East.
No pig-ignorant self-righteous guerilla cyclists here.
Hope someone does as much damage to that guy's property as he has done to theirs.
Ripping off a mirror - electrically operated, heated, painted - could cost hundreds.

my friend , like me , is a responsible hard working father who both drives and cycles. I actually own 4 cars, he has the one, but we much prefer the bike , certainly for any journey below 5 miles , unless with family / transporting stuff ( though I can get about 3 days' shopping into both bike baskets ). Am doing 50 miles weekly in London, that's a tankful of petrol a month saved , though that is just a bonus.
My mirror destroying friend does not wear lycra / speedo and is no ' Nazi ' - attitudes such as those expressed here are nearer to that. Ignorant drivers who block bike boxes and do so habitually , often on the phone , need an occasional butt kick, as they are completely detached from the world around them.
You guys should try to cycle a bit , reduce your car costs , increase fitness , save time etc etc etc - let's see how you feel then about bike boxes being blocked ?

We will have to take your word for it motorprop. Perhaps he's just a toerag given to acts of malicious damage. No better morally than an eco-nazi in my opinion, indeed a lot worse.
There is much discussion on this site on what to do when people drive dangerously or badly. The consensus seems to be that delivery of the 'kick in the butt' should not be a freelance choice. It isn't the individual's job.
I have nothing against cyclists, even the speedo ones who are much quicker through this town than cars. I try to be polite to them and not knock them down even when they are wearing black clothes and riding the wrong side of the road without lights at night as they so often do.
But what is this carp about 'cycle boxes'? So few cyclists wait at the lights that they just sit there empty. I often go in them myself. Do you imagine that they are sacred in some way?

I have cycled a bit, but not enough to come up against this 'bike boxes blocked' problem.
Or perhaps I have, but not thought much of it.
If someone deliberately damaged my property, I would try to damage theirs, or them.
The circumstances are irrelevant.
I'm the least violent person I know, but I have no faith in the police/authorities' interest/ability to deal with minor matters to my own satisfaction, so any redress has to be at my own hands.
This is not a criticism of the police/authorities, just an observation.
Such resources as are available tend to be diverted towards more serious matters, which is as it should be.

You need Chipsaway, Dentmaster or someone like that rather than a full blown body shop.

Aisling: There is a very good VW indy in Kilburn, the Green Garage. It is under a railway Arch in a street off the bottom of Shoot-Up Hill. Look it up in phone book and on map.
In the next arch, well known to the Green Garage, is Ricolway Autos, a very decent body shop with a Kiwi or Aussie boss. I have used and recommended both over the years. Nothing lasts for ever and London is expensive, but these are people who used to get the job done properly without ripping one off.
Good luck.
