The other day i came across an aerosol paint that is supposed to give a finish like polished alloy.
There are a few small blemishes on the XJS wheels that would benefit from something like that, if it works.
I usually buy car touch-up paint in aerosols, spray a bit in the lid and use a tiny brush, but I don't know if that would work for a shiny metallic finish.
Anyone know if this stuff actually does what it says on the tin? It ain't cheap but it's tempting if it's any good.

Honda Accord 1850 auto - in reverse, gradually slows to a halt with the engine racing and no drive. Putting it back into neutral and then reverse again gives you another "go". Even in the handbook there is a section where wording vaguely suggests that occasionally it may not select reverse properly and going to neutral then reverse again will sort. This started off being a problem reversing uphill but now affects level reversing. Car is serviced correctly and no faults are evident to the garage. Read more
Thanks Falkirk Bairn, I guess that's why it also feels more sluggish than 2 years ago and means the torque convertor is gradually failing......
Jazz Mk 1 vandalised outside Lake District cottage. On return from the bodyshop, I found these loose components inside the car- I suspect they're all from the nearside rear door, because one of them proved to be the missing rubber door bumper. I can't work out what they are from the Haynes manual, so I'm asking for help so I can 'discuss' it with the bodyshop on Monday. Thanks.

It's a rubber device that sits between the rear view mirror and the windscreen, presumably to damp vibration. It's called a mirror holder and is labelled 'A' in paragraph 2 of the above link.
The two bolts were from the door check strap mount on the door, but I can't see why they replaced them, since the vandalism occurred when the door was closed and the car parked.
Ive been recently interested in purchasing a van or my kayaks. Its between a Citroen Relay 2.0HDI or a Nissan Primastar 1.9TDI
My basic question is what is the fuel consumption for a HDI vs TDI as in does the TDI burn more fuel than the HDI or the other way around. Sorry for the silly questions I just dont know and have been recommend to ask here.
Thanks in advance,

Hi
It takes 8-10 turns of the key to start in the morning. Once I start it and turn the engine off there's no problem restarting it. Just first thing in the morning. The longer I leave it with the engine off, the harder it is to re-start. If I leave it for 4 hours it takes about 3 turns of the key to start. Overnight 8-10 turns. It's as if the fuel isn't getting into the engine
When I try to start it and I put my foot on the accelerator, this doesn't help either. In fact putting the foot on the accelerator feels as if it extinguishes the starting process.
Also, when I am trying to start it, for a second or 2 after I turn the key the engine chugs for a bit (it doesn't sound healthy) with the rpm way below what it should be.
I hope my explanation helps! Thanks Read more
In tank pump? Sounds like you got the seal fitted wrongly.
Do not drive. Risk of fire.
I know I should really look it up, but I'm in lazy mode, and it may be useful for others, so...
Our second car which is SORN'd is parked on our drive, well off the public highway. Its only worth a few hundred quid and we're not intending to use if for quite a while... my insurance renweal has come through and its similar to the value of the car, so it seems daft insuring it...
So does it need to be insured? Read more
would have to mot insure sorn it if this govt had its sordid little way
Is that seriously being considered? How do you MOT a car that is in pieces being restored - take the boxes of bits down to the garage and get the tester to rummage through them?
Hi, I had a new cambelt fitted at Renault about a month ago on my 1.6 engine, and since then the alternator belt has come off twice. The bottom pulley looks to be wobbling slightly when the engine's running, could it be a case of Renault not putting everything back together properly, or is it just a case of bad luck? Cheers Chris Read more
Thanks galileo, I've been in touch with the Renault place where the work was done, and it'll be going in this week. Chris
The interior lights on my Grand Cherokee are staying on all the time and flattening the battery. All the door switches are working correctly so I suspect the timer relay (lights have a courtesy delay),but cant find it.Does anyone know where on the vehicle it is located?
Thanks

Hi Simon
Have you checked the dimmer on the light switch? if you rotate the switch it will put the light on all the time or if rotated the other way it will be off all the time. I find most of the time people have turned it without realising.

Simon
Wow. Just had a reminder that my photocard license will expire in September.
I had already obtained a D1 form from the post office on HJ's recommendation on a previous thread.
I didn't think DVLA sent out reminders though, let alone the actual application form?
(actually I'm more amazed my post has been delivered before 1pm!) Read more
It's probably the same as with road tax though, ie the reminder is only a courtesy so not receiving it is no defence if you forget to renew.
Posties don't like working Saturday afternoons any more than anybody else.
Seems to be true, post is allways early here on a saturday but can be as late as 5pm during the week.
