I know I should really look it up, but I'm in lazy mode, and it may be useful for others, so...
Our second car which is SORN'd is parked on our drive, well off the public highway. Its only worth a few hundred quid and we're not intending to use if for quite a while... my insurance renweal has come through and its similar to the value of the car, so it seems daft insuring it...
So does it need to be insured?

No need for Ins on private land.
You can get F&T Ins if the car is laid up & not driven
|
The requirement in relation to the vehicle is when it is on a 'road' or 'public place'.
Your drive is private property so there is no requirement to insure the vehicle.
Any theft, damage, fire etc will be down to your pocket unless you go the F.T. road mentioned above.
Also at the moment there are moves afoot to bring non insured vehicle in line with a SORN system like Vehicle Excise so that the authorities have a continuous history on a vehicle. The legislation is in place under Road Safety Act but a commencement order has not yet been made in relation to that particluar section.

This commencement holding will would affect anyone with a classic car/wagon/motorbike etc that for one reason or another is off the road under the current sorn conditions
In their shed ,in a barn ,or even outstanding in its field, as they would have to mot insure sorn it if this govt had its sordid little way

Is that seriously being considered? How do you MOT a car that is in pieces being restored - take the boxes of bits down to the garage and get the tester to rummage through them?

No. It is very likely to be covered under your household insurance, but check with them regarding value.
