98 1.8 Takes 8-10 turns of key to start in morning - dgriff
Hi
It takes 8-10 turns of the key to start in the morning. Once I start it and turn the engine off there's no problem restarting it. Just first thing in the morning. The longer I leave it with the engine off, the harder it is to re-start. If I leave it for 4 hours it takes about 3 turns of the key to start. Overnight 8-10 turns. It's as if the fuel isn't getting into the engine

When I try to start it and I put my foot on the accelerator, this doesn't help either. In fact putting the foot on the accelerator feels as if it extinguishes the starting process.

Also, when I am trying to start it, for a second or 2 after I turn the key the engine chugs for a bit (it doesn't sound healthy) with the rpm way below what it should be.

I hope my explanation helps! Thanks

Could be a leak in the fuel system allowing air to enter. Seems unlikely.

Could it be an immobiilser problem - as on 106?

Sounds as if the cold-running mixture enrichment isn't working. Temperature sensor perhaps.

It may be that simply unplugging the wires to the sensor and plugging them in again will work.

I'll try your suggestion. Where would I find the temperature sensor?

Can someone tell me where to find the temperature sensor to unplug? Thanks.

I'll try to be a bit more specific:

where abouts under the bonnet can I find the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor for the peugeot 406?

Thank you

Haynes says thermostat housing, blue connector.

I have changed the spark plugs, replaced the air filter, replaced the starting motor (because I needed to). I replaced the fuel pump today but now there's a really strong smell of fuel in my car. And my problem is still not fixed! Should I even be driving the car with such a strong smell of petrol in the car?

I'm getting my hands on a multi-meter tomorrow and I'll check out the thermostat.

In tank pump? Sounds like you got the seal fitted wrongly.

Do not drive. Risk of fire.
