Hi all,

Have just bought the above car and overall it's great. However after 5 days driving and a reasonable 120 mile run, it has developed a problem selecting gears.

The fault is intermittent and either fully present or not at all. Fault is only present just after start up.

What happens is I start the car but then cannot select any gears - the lever will simply not shift to any position, as if no clutch operation at all.

Have started it in gear and the car pulls.

After a few attempts at starting/switch off/re starting, the fault is no longer present and the car drives perfectly, indefinitely. Switch off and restart and fault is present again.

Recovery company suggested a fault in one of the clutch cylinders leading to lack of pressure. (no leaks present)

Trader I bought car from has taken it to a garage and paying for fix (and has given me a courtesy car) so I can't complain really.

I'd really like to know what could be causing this fault so that I can check it's been fixed properly and not just bodged. Anyone got any ideas? Read more

Just today I had very strange thing going on. My car would start as usually..no probs, but once I turn the key off (ignition) the engine wouldn't stop working. I can stop the engine just by getting first gear in and blocking the engine. Any Ideas anyone?

I too would go for the stop solonoid, although you could try disconnecting the wire from it in case the 12v isn't going off. If it runs on at normal tickover speed with the wire off, its definitly the solonoid.

i have just been to a Seat garage locally and have paid to have My 1.9 GT TDI 130 put
on the computer read out as i was experiencing my car going into limp mode at 3k+ rpm.
I was told previously that it could be a MAFF filter or maybe a vacuum hose or too high input to air flow meter.
They have just told my I need a new Turbo charger....is it a case of same old story..rob the guy..? Or is it correct.
I insisted on retaining the diagnosis sheet and it says;
17965 P1557 Turbo/Supercharger Boost Sensor (A) Circuit
value above upper control limit.

17978 P1570 Engine Control Module disabled.

Please help because they want to charge me £1190+ for the privilege.
Thanks,

I have a similar problem with my 1.9tdi 130 Audi. Did you find out what cased your problem?
My local garage suggest that it is liklely to be a sticking turbo on the variable vane. When quizzed about alternatives they said

Split hoses - would get sucking noise
MAF - if faulty would give problem all time and not re-set with ignition turn off
N75 - would be all time

They felt turbo would need taking off and sending to specialist to clean and sort. Total £600ish.

My son has just had a failure of 3 gearbox mountings on his Vauxhall Astra 1.8, neither of us have ever heard of this happening before.
Any suggestions on the cause - garage thinks it might have been bolts not tightened after clutch replacement vibrating loose.
Further question , what damage is likely to have been caused
Hope you can help Read more

Hi I work for EMS Research in west London, we are currently conducting a study among Prius Hybrid owners, trying to gather opinions and gain insight about hybrid cars generally and about the Prius in particular. We are holding a discussion group at our offices in Chiswick on Wednesday 13th May at 6.30pm which will last approximately 1 hour, all participants will be paid.
If anyone is interested in taking part please contact Anna on 020 8996 0498 or by email to anna.marc@ems.eu.com
If you know of someone who might be interested please pass my details on to them.
All participants must have owned their Prius for at least one year.

Can anyone help please ?

My citroen c5 2.2 hdi had the head gasket & timing belt changed - i understand this is all ok

Then the turbo went and that was replaced too, i'm informed this is functioning OK

The garage that presently has the car has fitted the turbo but the car still drives like a three legged dog, no grunt no power, and the owner tells me that there are various connectors and hoses that he has no idea where they should connect !

The first garage that had the car has apparently left the engine in some mess and now it's proving difficult to get to the bottom of the issue

Is there documentation or manuals would enable the garage to understand where the various hoses & connectors should go ?

Or are there any recommended garages in perth or dundee who could help me out ? Read more

Can anybody explain some oddities in the infamous JD Power reliability survey. Let me give you an example. I could have chosen others but this shows the problem clearly.

The VW Passat scores not at all well for reliability: www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/driver_power_2008...p
assat_new.html

whilst the Skoda Octavia is very well regarded:
www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/driver_power_2008...i
a_new.html

The VW Golf fits somewhere in the middle:

olf_mkv.html

Given that these cars take their components from the same set of common parts I find these results very hard to interpret. Is reliability being determined by the durability of the cup holders rather than major components or am I missing something?

Skodas are similarly good cars but not marketed sold or priced in the same way
so don't build the same unrealistic expectations. I suspect that very minor gripes which would
cause a major diplomatic incident in a VW would if not go unnoticed by a
Skoda driver certainly not provoke the same sense of outrage and disappointment.

Very good analysis indeed..

I remember quite a few years ago, the chief exec of BMW Uk was taken to task on a consumer programme possibly watchdog, as to why BMW at the time had so many customer complaints.

His answer was that people who buy BMW's are more discerning than purchases of the more volume brands and as such would pick up on more minor issues. - Good answer ! Whether it is right or wrong.

The toggle switch on the arm rest for the drivers window has come loose and it appears that a small clip on bracket has broken . I plan to take one off from the rear door but I am unable to remove it. It has a stamp on it made in Japan so I presume the same type is fitted to other cars , I have tried to open the unit but it looks fragile it must come apart. I am open to suggestions , the local breakers yard may have the whole arm rest unit what should that cost ?

Just managed to fix the toggle , replaced drivers window switch with one from rear window . separating the rear unit was a bit fiddly but with 2 small screwdrivers it came apart and wes able (carefully) to prize off the toggle . It was quite easy to snap it into the armrest unit and hey presto it worked . the toggle in the rear window looks okay but does not work from the rear but is ok from the front . Is that ok for the MOT.??

Following recent discussions on low profile tyres, I wonder if the car manufacturers have lost the plot when it comes to ordinary cars and ride comfort...

Personally I feel that the use of ultra low profile tyres and stiffened suspension has gone much too far... most of us don't want, or need, a car which will handle like an F1 car so all these things do is make for a more uncomfortable car to drive... What makes matters worse is that the higher up you go on the trim levels you go the lower the profile the tyres, and you don't even get the option of going for more "ordinary" tyres...

Agreed I have a C4 and its very comfortable. However I had a 306 before that with 15" wheels and that made my C4 pretty firm in comparison - used to feel like a much bigger car than it actually was. Although it wasnt as grippy as the C4 I actually think it drove and handled better - probably something to do with the lower centre of gravity and the lack of power steering.

I reckon the majority of people would sacrifice a bit of handling for ride comfort. My mum for one far prefers her old Laguna over the Civic.

Still I did drive a Golf the other day and thouht that had an excellent compromise between ride and handling (ruined a bit by the over firm seats though). I hear the Focus is pretty good too though have not tried one although my mates ST170 is far too firm in my opinion.
