hi, I'm new to this but desperate to get to root of probs with my car. Bought it private in Jan this year, duff purchase, ok, my problem. Head gasket blew big time, fixed. Thermostat housing was corroded, fixed. Fan didn't kick in, mechanic wiped connection and it started to come on when the red light showed on dashboard, so new switch fitted to radiator. Fan seems to be working correctly but the engine overheats because coolant leaks away. Car gets hot as soon as I hit heavy traffic and coolant begins to stream away from this small tube attached just underneath the cap, completely emptys itself on my drive after journey finished. Is it the pump, or the cap not sealed correctly or should this little pipe be attached to something? Apart from that, I actually lilke the car, it turns on a sixpence, is very comfortable, not too powerful, the heater works and the boot is big enough for all my equipment. Have spent more than I can afford and am worried. Read more

thanks very much for this, Citroen service centre very expensive so last resort on work front. I think I have not done this revving thing properly so will try that and then hopefully I will have a good idea as to what I am up against.
Once again, thank you for your help.

A FERRARI driver thought he?d seen it all when he was pulled over by a high-ranking policeman ? for going too slowly!

Denis Evans, of Southerndown, was at the wheel of his wife?s £150,000 red sports car at 7.45am when he was stopped by Assistant Chief Constable Nick Croft.

Mr Evans was doing a leisurely 25mph near the Pelican pub in Ogmore-by-Sea ? a 40mph zone ? when he saw the unmarked Audi saloon behind him with flashing blue lights.

Even gives you the route to take too!

Combine it with The Highways Agency traffic report sites you can then navigate around all those nasty littel cliches and miles of roadworks.

You can search by house number, road name, city and postcode as well as just city to city.

You can also plan routes to anywhere in the world by road - who was it asking for routes to Munich recently?! Read more

What a lovely collection of pointless tools, had a good little time waste on there. Being able to calculate the area within a polygon, quite clever.

I am looking for a replacement engine for my mk4 VW Golf 1.4 16v Engine Code BCA. I cannot locate a BCA code engine but there seems to be plenty of AHW code engines around.

The engines look identical but I am reluctant to get the wrong code engine just in case it want fit.

Any VW experts confirm if this engine will fit without any problems? Read more

How many miles has it done and how many miles per litre is it using. This could be a shot turbo and oil mist is being injested. Check in the intercooler and the manifold inlet pipe for excess oil. Regards Peter

I know that this has come up in previous threads but I'm not sure if a definite answer was posted.

I have just renewed my taxed disc online (this is about 2 weeks early), is it legal to display this disc before the old one has run out? If not, then with all of the online/radio/TV encouragement to renew I would have thought that they would have included some kind of bold warning not to display it until the old one has expired. I might have told this story on here before and if I have I apologise. Some years ago my Galaxy which was then only a few months old was broken into in Manchester. Some of my stuff was taken and a window smashed. Anyway, I called the police who were not very interested and didn't even attend the scene despite my having lost some valuables but there you go. That's not the point of my ramble.

Anyway, the window was fixed and I carried on using the car. A few weeks later, I had to go to Northern Ireland via Stranraer / Belfast. Because I carry large suspicious looking bags I usually attract the attention of security checks at such places. I was checked by the harbour police on the way in to Belfast and again on my disembarcation at Stranraer on the way back. About a week after that while washing the car I noticed for the first time that the tax disc was missing. It suddenly came to me that I had been driving around without a tax disc for a couple of montths as it must have been stolen at the time of the break in. I hadn't noticed. No traffic warden had noticed despite the car having been reguarly parked in many different locations in various towns and cities and furthermore, two sets of security concious harbour police hadn't noticed.

Of course I immediately arranged a replacement disc but it struck me then that obviously nobody much cared about it.

The battery had gone flat in a Rover 400 and has been stood for 6 weeks. A new fully charged battery was installed but it fails to fire up. It appears by the small LED in the middle of the dash display that the immobiliser has kicked in. Due to the flat battery the car was opened with the key not the remote. Any ideas how he can overcome this. He only has one key for the car. Regards Peter Read more

Thanks for the link. Method 2 from the top link fixed the problem and he is up and running again. The problem apparently is caused becuase the fob is used when the car battery is flat and the rolling code between the fob and the car ECU get out of sync. Thanks again. Regards Peter

Does exactly what it says on the box.

Nifty, light weight, quite fast (around 3 mins from flat to 33psi) a lot quieter than I expected, very compact, very accurate and comes in its own zip up padded bag too.

White light is constant and the red flashes out either 'SOS' or just flashes 1 or 2 times per second.

As per link above £19.99 + £2.50p&p arrived next day delivery 1st class recorded.

Good morning everyone.

I'm sorry for the peculiar thread title it was the best I could think of in my hungry state.

I must confess, after my last car debacle, I am very paranoid about oil. I don't understand my w's from my semi synthetics or my Castrol from my Sunflower but I do know that it's important.

To that end, I checked the oil this morning as I do every 2-3 weeks and I have two questions...although I'm afraid both are as stupid as each other but I rather like this car so I don't want to do something silly like break it.

a) When looking at the dipstick, I can see some engraved markings that look at bit like this..(forgive my horrendous attempts at showing you):

[xxxxxx]

So one would think that that is the measurement for the oil with the topmost x being the maximum. But, a little further up, the dipstick kinks and there are some traces of oil on that kink. Am I reading it correctly or would the maximum be the kink?

b) I moved the car, left it for ten minutes and checked the oil and it covered around three quarters of the X's so presumably I need a little top up. Now then, what do I need? The manual says it must conform to ACEA A1 or A2 but I can use A3 although "this has no bearing on whether it's mineral, semi or fully synthetic." It also gives me a table detailing I need a certain grade if I live in Outer Mongolia or whether I'm on desert patrol and reading between the lines, I *think* I'd be best with 5w40 from looking at the table but what kind? Fully, semi or mineral?

As you can see, I'm dangerous as soon as I open the bonnet but I don't want to mess anything up, so, here I am!

Many thanks for any pearls of wisdom you can impart. I realise I've made an easy subject very complicated and for that, I'm sorry.

Adam

P.S. The car is a petrol.

NO!

The max and min marks on a dipstick are just that. As long as the oil level is above the min and below the max, it's fine.

I never fill above max, and I certainly don't waste my time keeping it on the max like many folk I know. Overfilling can cause damage.

I don't bother too much if the level falls a little below min just before an oil change. Why put new oil in I'm soon going to throw away?

Saw these being offered at a service station recently.

Thought it a strange idea, expecting me to subsidise the cost of feeding other people's children.

Decided not to eat there.

My son was taken to resturants at an early age and none of this childrens
meals rubbish either all round the world. At home from an appropriate age (around 12)
he had wine with a meal too.

Us too, went EVERYWHERE with us at nearly all times and what dividends it has paid. She is now a charming 23 and quite worldy wise, employed and asks for nothing. Result of using our brains.
