Can anyone help with the method to check for the correct tensioning on a new timing belt for this TUD5 diesel engine ? Thanks Read more

andrewuwe

You put the belt on with 45 degrees as above. Then give the engine a quick run, 10 seconds tops. Then redo the tension. When you've finished run the engine with the covers still off, if you got it far too tight then the belt will scream (OK maybe sing not scream) as you rev the engine. Far too loose and the belt will be flapping about.
As long as you pass this then you should then be able to 5mph it to the nearest garage that has the tool.

Thinking about 'chipping' the Golf GT TDi. (The 2 litre PD) Bit leggy now at 82K but running perfectly. I'm not looking for massive gains maybe up to 170 brake, but I don't want to be leaving huge clouds of black smoke. If that's the outcome then I definitely won't bother. Anyone got any experience and able to recommend a product? Read more

a smiley instead of an exclamation mark.

Can't be a great job. Thankless task at times I guess. Accepted and handshake.

you could get a good 2 yr old Mk3 mx5 sport for about £9k I would think. I paid £14.5 for my 1 year old example last year with 2400 miles on it. Not the best fiscal decision I have made but good fun and fairly practical.

Help - My 18 son's 97 Clio 1.2 has broken down, apparently it lost power ( no undue noise ) and stopped.
I have checked the usual suspects - fuel etc as a matter of course. The problem is that now the car is back on the drive I cannot get it to start. There is a healthy spark at the plugs and fuel is getting into the fuel injection system at the fuel inlet- beyond that nothing.

Any help or suggestions would be welcome - I have read a number of posts but most seem to be a problem with running rough or taking time to start - I cannot even get that far.

When was the cambelt last changed?

Check the cambelt condition and has not slipped (timing marks aligned). If the belt has slipped, or worse broken, then it will be a cylinder head off and overhaul job. It is unlikely that the valves will have escaped bending so just replacing the belt will probably not get the engine running satisfactarily.

So if a panel is galvanised, how come I've got rust bubbling through the paint on the tailgate? Can galvanised panels be rubbed down and painted (surely that removes the zinc then?), or does it need a new tailgate?

Ha, at least the garage won't be able to blame it on stone damage. Read more

L'escargot

I vaguely remember that galvanised steel is only corrosion resistant as long as the zinc coating is intact. As soon as the zinc coating is broken, bimetallic (galvanic) corrosion can occur which results in the steel corroding.

I think we need a metallurgist!

Just rang up a local garage to arrange a test drive only to find the demonstrator I want to try is away for Easter. It seems whoever is running the car is taking a long weekend. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've got this wrong but I thought demonstrators were meant to be available for the public to try, not company cars for the senior salesmen. Maybe had I tried to arrange something earlier in the week then the car would have been made available.

Another problem I have with test drives is getting hold of the car for long enough to know if I really want to buy it. Car salesmen seem to think a 20-30 minutes run is long enough for me to make a decision about spending a lot of money. Unfortunately I'm not like that. I need to take my time before spending my hard earned. The last thing I want is to find I get backache from driving my new car after spending £20k. From reading various car forums it seems many company car buyers get a much better deal in that cars are delivered to their door to try for several days. Why is the same level of service not available for people like myself spending our own money? Read more

Never had a problem with the cars I've bought privately - I was offered an unaccompanied drive in the CRV but declined it. The Skoda was offered in the same way. Might not get the engine/trim level I eventually bought but that can't really be helped given the range of combos available. Never worried me unduly that one.

Would I be right in thinking that brake lining life (e.g. front pads) is significantly shorter in cars with automatics than manual transmission?

With the new DSG boxes from VAG, do these perform active engine braking - by that I mean do they change down gear when slowing down in a way that engine braking is significant?

Just thinking that if I go for a DSG equipped car, will I need to change the pads twice as often as the manual equivalent.....

>>If he had had his way a bit more Minis and 1100s and the like might bave been a bit dearer, but they would surely have been better.

Yes; that's a dangerous argument and essentially it makes my point for me; where do you stop?

IMO, BMC didn't restrain Issigonis enough. They allowed him to design the Mini, which they had to sell at a loss. It was Ford who got small front wheel drive right, and it took them from 1959 to 1976 to work out how to do it at reasonable cost!
