Hi, I'm here again hoping for anyone to help me shed some light on my VW Golf Mk2 1.3 with the 2e3 Pierburg transistorised ignition car.
The problem is that two days ago I was on my way home and going up a hill and I put my foot down but as it levelled, it started jerking rather violently. I was then flooring it home but I was struggling to do 50mph.
At first I thought it was blocked jets so I cleaned the carb jets and I left it in paraffin all night and checked the floats, jets, power valve, all the diaphragms, the vacuum pipes, the manifold flange and the timing (spot on!). And I?m getting a good spark...
She's ok when she's idling. It sounds a little bit like a motorbike but I can?t find anything wrong, but I?ve noticed when testing it back and forth that the brakes are not as good. I'm wondering if the vacuum servo might have some thing to do with the carb's spitting.
I've done the test as in pump the brakes and start the engine and I?m sure the pedal goes down slightly. But I can't really say it moves a lot. I've tried putting my thumb at the end of the manifold pipes with my dad having his feet on the throttle and brake but I can?t feel any pressure sucking or blowing. I?m not too sure of if this could relate to the poor running or is it just nothing?
Help please....
Thanks

Is this not related at all to your problem in August? I notice you were unlucky to get advice then.

Which would be the better buy with the main concern being reliability and running/maintenance costs? Does the Almera Tino have a cambelt or chain?
moved you over to Discussion Read more
We had a 1.8 Tino for a couple of months and now have a Scenic 1.6 petrol. Can't compare reliability as we didn't have the Tino long enough but to live with and drive the Renault comprehensively trumps it.
The Tino was noisy, slow and thirsty. Motorway cruising was a chore. The renault is a quiet and comfortable cruiser and the 1.6vvt petrol engine has much more go.
The practicality of the Scenic beats the Tino, the seats move about more, there are more cubby holes and many more "surprise and delight" features.
The new shaped Scenics are quite cheap now, our 3 year old 20k miler was just over £3,500 at auction in July last year. Older and cheaper versions are widely available.
Also I much prefer the styling of the Scenic, the Tino seems quite old-hat now.
I am thinking of buying one of these vehicles but would like to know at what intervals the cambelts are changed and does it differ between the 1.4 and the 1.6? Read more
If you are still thinking of buying a Scenic, may I suggest reading the Which? reports on second hand MPV's.They cover reliability/repair costs.I'm afraid it will not be good news.
On the 'news' section i notice the headline about 5th Jan being breakdown day.
As my ageing car has been stood since Christmas Eve, i got my trusty battery charger out and gave the battery a good charge up yesterday.
I'll be starting up at about 4.30am Monday, so i don't want to hear the ominous sounds of slowly turning engine followed by the heart stopping sounds of clicking starter.
(i've also popped in to work and run up the truck engine for half an hour, not a hope that it would start otherwise)
As an aside i had to change the battery a few weeks ago, now i always buy good quality things if possible and the battery was no exception, but the new one i bought 14 or so months previously just died without warning.
That was a top German battery and i've had that make for years without the slightest problem, so was very surprised when it suddenly packed up.
GSF exchanged it for me without quibble and i only have good things to say about them, the chap there was quite surprised too.
All is good now, just a reminder to those like me who have been lazing around, get that battery charged up. Read more
just mention that you know Dynamic Dave !
Well thats ST and DD i'll have to drop into the order conversation, another couple and they'll be paying me.;)
I had thought that Belisha beacon was becoming extinct, but there is a new thriving colony in Leighton Buzzard. Thee or four of the light-controlled type on West Street have been replaced by zebras, and the traffic seems to be flowing much better.
It's an edge of town location without throngs of pedestrians but quite a bit of traffic, which now doesn't have to queue in both directions after the occasional pedestrian has long gone, having pushed the button and nipped across well before the green man has even appeared.
There are speed tables at the crossings which keep traffic to a reasonable speed without being stupidly obstructive, and pedestrians can cross pretty well when they want.
From the council website:
"The works involve replacing the majority of traffic lights in the town with roundabouts and zebra crossings. A 20-mph zone will also be introduced.[...]Removing the traffic lights at junctions should reduce the amount of time drivers are kept waiting at red lights which, in turn, will help traffic flow along the roads.
Well done Bedfordshire County Council.

My mother failed her driving test first time for stopping for somebody who wasn't already on the crossing. By the early nineties, my driving instructor gave me an earful for NOT stopping for somebody who was standing by, but not on, the crossing.
As a pedestrian, I always place a toe on the crossing, then wait for the car to stop (or make it clear he is stopping) and then cross.
I have a feeling again that it might be a good time to have a new car, I've been out this week to check on some of the latest models. My Colt 3dr is now almost 3 years old and performed well, I've had a couple of minor issues with regards to rattles and Mitsubishi customer service but nothing that would prevent me from buying the same model/brand again, especially as the number one factor space is well taken care of.
The Honda garage had a few new Jazz models around all of different specs. I had a sit in the 1.2 S version, very well put together and fantastic quality of materials, it all had a nice feel. The space is a slight improvement on the old model, however the seat is to high at the lowest position, the angle of the seat isn't great and it doesn't go back as far as I require. Indeed when I attempted to press the clutch down moving my foot from the rest a sharp pain was delivered up my shin. It'll be great for a lot of people but I do think for quite a few the seats lowest setting is to high.
Passing the Hyundai sales room today they had a new i20 outside (didn't expect to see one yet). They look rather plain from the outside, especially the one I viewed in black, it is without any doubt a VX Corsa copy. Internally it was well put together, nice seat fabric, controls and dash, although the gear stick seemed to positioned in an unnatural location. The plastic was solid and sturdy, reminded me of the plastic VW used to use in the 80s Polo and Golf. An improvement on the Getz and It'll sell well but its not far me, the seat just doesn't go back very far.
Last stop was the Mitsubishi dealer and the face lift Colt, there are only minor changes from the older version. The dash has changed a little, new stereo, trip computer moved from a centre display to a tiny little one next to the speedo. They are using the same moldings with a slightly different pattern for the soft touch part of the dash but the doors remain the same with a slightly harder rubber covering. The space for the boot/backseat can't be changed any longer (rather disappointing). Its no improvement on the older model.
All this leaves me rather disappointed, I could buy a new colt (pre-facelift) but I was after something new and fresh. It seems there isn't anything on the market at present that is small(ish), high with a good amount of room to spend my dosh on, any suggestions? Read more
Yes quite - my fiancees brother has 4 kids and lives in a council house, drives a bettered Galaxy yet seems to spend silly amounts of money on things like new TV's and by all accounts, has been bailed out by parents several times.
I still would consider it rude to either question him on whether he can afford something or what he might spend it on. His parents and wife are the only ones who really should pose those questions and as such, I cannot for the life of me wonder why anyone would seek to advise people over the net when they have simply asked about one model of car or another.
If my neighbour came across the street when we got the new car and asked me if I could really afford it, id tell them to mind their own business ( thats the polite version ). Since I know folk in the BR less well than a neighbour, it makes me cringe when that seems to be everyones focus.
If anything, we should all be concerned about Rattle's willingness to persue mechanical perfection with a rather past it Fiesta :-)
can someone please tell me the amount of time the glowplug light should stay on and the same for the relay if its different, also should the pugs get a full 12 volt reading when opperated thanks Read more
If all the glow plugs are working you would expect around 10 volts when operating.

it is the bmw engine, im just worried about the amount of miles
