My father-in-law borrowed my brother-in-law's car when his own broke down. F-I-L has fully comp insurance and was definitely covered to drive the car (3rd party only) under his own insurance, and B-I-L had his own insurance (TPF&T) anyway.
Father-in-law was hit in rear at traffic island whilst stationary. Exchanged names etc with other driver as you do, damage was rear quarter on a 51 plate Suzuki Swift; bumper, light lens, boot lid.
He is now being passed from pillar to post by the two insurance companies, both saying that the other one should deal with it.
Could anyone offer some advice please? Read more

Hi
Pretty much as the subject title really. Astra 1.7 DTI Y17DT
When in traffic and using the clutch and a little throttle, if I dip the clutch the revs will sometimes shoot to 1500rpm.
Likewise, if I dip the clutch to change gear, the revs will 'hover' for about half a second or so before coming down, but only if they're between 1500rpm and 2000rpm.
Any ideas? Read more
bump!
I've also noticed that it runs a bit lumpy/missing when started after being stood for a while. It will start fine, and the fault will clear after about 15 seconds or so.
The auxilliary belt squeals under load if that's any help.
Apart from obviously slow vehicles, what is your slowest driver experience?
I came up to a roundabout in Telford last year, I was on the FJS600. I stopped on the line to let a car from my right enter the roundabout. It was an old, ordinary small saloon of some sort driven by yer archtypical little old lady who was looking ahead through the steering wheel. She came round the island and set off in the direction I was going, a single carriageway, 60mph, main road. There was a line of HGVs coming towards us so I stayed behind her. I followed her for a good half mile, during which she hugged the kerb at about 12mph. I could have passed after a bit but I was interested to see if she went any quicker, which she didn't.
I whipped past, leaving, I imagine, a long frustrated line of vehicles behind her.

G-Whizzes are often slow but not always. Guess it depends on how much juice there is left.
More than half the cars I see tend to be driven too slowly. Of course your average St John's Wood Lexus/Mercedes/Volvo can put anyone in a towering rage in just a few hundred yards. But am I the only person who constantly meets mimsing (and meandering) BMWs? There are lots in this town. And the people carriers, Ford and VW for the most part with a good sprinkling of Toyotas, that these days pass for minicabs are infuriatingly slow and hesitant. A blot on the escutcheon of what used to be a noble profession.
I have a problem with water coming into the pasenger side foot well and soaking the carpets. The car is only 9 months old but I want to avoid taking it back to the dealer as it is such a faff and there may be a simple solution. After reading the post on the Vauxhall it set me thinking. The car has no sunroof and as it is relatively new I would doubt if any seals or drains were perished, the water is rain water as it is nice and clean. Any ideas appreciated. Read more
Got the car back yesterday after it was booked into the dealer they said it was a bulk head seal that was faulty, it seems that they have had to remove the windscreen at some point and maybe some of the dash but hopefully that will be it sorted only glad it was done under warranty.
I have been stung twice in my last two car rentals for 'damage' which I am disputing.
The second rental was made using a well known broker who have washed their hands of the matter saying they have no knowledge and want copy documents which needless to say I have not kept. The extra charge has simply appeared on my credit card statement. I will be complaining to my credit card company as well, when they open on Monday morning.
I have heard about insurance for renters, which covers all the excesses and other charges that one may incur. Has anyone bought this cover and more importantly, have they claimed successfully on it?

Amex Plat card insurance is useful but only applies if the car rental is associated
with a flight or hotel booking.
Please make your own checks but I don't believe that's correct.
You simply have to be on a trip. From the rules:
?Trip? means a journey outside Your Country of Residence; or a journey within Your
Country of Residence which must include a flight, or at least one night pre-booked
accommodation away from home. Trips can be up to 120 consecutive days or up to
240 days during each 12-month period, but must commence and end in Your Country
of Residence.
I'm talking about model numbers.
Did you know even numbers are saloons and odd numbers are hatchbacks/estates?
So a C30 is a hatch, an S40 a saloon, a V50 an estate, an S60 a saloon, a V70 an estate, an S80 a big saloon and an XC90 a big estate.
So what's a 99?
An ice cream with a flake in it, dummy.
Seriously, the way Volvo play the numbers game was news to me, is it news to you ?
And anyone care to explain other manufacturers' numbering systems? Read more
"V" in the model range stood for "versatile" I thought I once read somewhere. "S"
for saloon of course.
That's right, originally they wanted to call the V40 the F40 (F for Flexible) but a certain Italian manufacturer (not the one who makes tractors) objected.
Hi, my water light is coming on all the time and the car is overheating but the tank is full. Any ideas what i should do. I am a total car idiot so please speak in baby language! Thanks :) Read more
If the heater is not working that would probably indicate air in the cooling system, likely caused by a leaking head gasket pressurising the system and blowing the water out, this could be as a result of overheating, or, it could be as mentioned, failure of the thermostat. To check for this, start the engine from cold and leave it running for a few minutes then feel the top hose to the radiator, this should remain cold until the engine reaches normal temperature and then suddenly get hot as the thermostat opens. If the high temp light comes on and the hose/radiator is still cold, that would indicate a faulty thermostat.
Is the water level normal when you check it from cold? Pressure in the cooling system can cause it to rise when hot even when the engine is not completely full. Is there any sign of water being blown out around the filler cap or vent pipe? Have you had to continuiously top up the water?
I have a T reg Ford Focus 1.8 petrol which has done 78k miles. I have worked out that since the last oil change which was last November, the engine has consumed about 500ml (0.5 quart/litre) of oil whilst covering about 1000 miles. Is this rate of oil consumption normal and also presumably all car owner's have to top up, some more than others, if there is a full year between services and they have driven say 10-12k miles.
When I checked the oil level today it was about 3mm above minimum, but provided it doesn't go Below minimum then no damage would occur - is this right ?
On this webpage it gives some figues for engine oil consumption but when they say NEW engines today use less than 0.5 quart of oil in 3000 miles this wouldn't apply in my case

All engines use a little oil, which will increase with age and milage. Your consumption is within normal tolerances, and if it were mine I would personally not be too concerned.
Ford, like many others, do specify a 5/30 or 0/30 oil and it will obviously use more than than a thicker /40 oil. Originally this spec was because of "inferior oils" a few years ago which would block and gum up the valvetrain with carbon and gunge on this engine. I used a Fiesta 1.25 which suffered bad consumption on 5/30, which halved consumption on 5/40. If you read the oil feature on here it suggests that oil degrades and thins down over the service life, so what started out as a 5/30 could be down to a 5/20. When the engine is hot and tolerances open up this alows the thin hot oil to slip past the rings and get burned.
My advice to owners of all these cars which specify a /30 (mainly for a 1-2% improvement in fuel consumption) is try a 5/40 but fully synthetic, which will stay in grade longer.
As engines age and wear oil consumption has always increased. Valve stem oil seals are not as tight, piston rings wear, bores glaze (a problem with gently driven engines - unusual in a car which makes good progress - ie take it to the red line daily).
I know lots of cars that run on synthetic oil, top notch coolant, and are driven enthusiastically, which run to 200k without problems. The high consumers are cars which are pootled about, on the cheapest top up oil on the forecourt. Car dead at under 100k.
looking at mpvs, touran 2.0 diesel se against verso 2.2 diesel sr. £1390 difference to swop the bora in favour of the verso. more toys on the verso but the touran looks more practical and has deeper windows. resale values at present favour the touran.
anybody got experience of either/both. tia, jag. Read more
thanks for advice & comments. dealer is good, son works there as a van technician so aware of turbo probs and iv'e been driving turbo diesels for over 30yrs, never had one go yet but there is always a first time. as reported it is a good drive. thanks, jag.
