BBC Watchdog covered Volvos 2/3 years back and there was a denial of the problem at that time from Volvo UK
Volvo Cars said Thursday it was recalling a total of 56,000 vehicles because of two separate problems.
Volvo Cars spokeswoman Maria Bohlin said 38,000 diesel cars of the S60, V 70 XC 70 and XC 90 models made in 2006 were being called back in Europe due to a material fault that could cause the motor catching fire. The second callback, involving 18,000 of the company's latest V 70 and XC 70 models, relates to an air bag problem in the side of the car.
It was not immediately clear how many British fire incidents there had been.
Bohlin said the fuel injector plants or bolts, located on top of the motor cylinder, were faulty, potentially causing diesel to leak out into the motor.
Injector plants or bolts would be replaced free-of-charge in a procedure that would take about two hours, she said.
With the air bags "there's a risk they don't launch fast enough," Bohlin said.
The cars have mainly been sold in Sweden, Britain and in the U.S.
Bohlin declined to say how much the recalls and maintenance work would cost the company.

Hi All,
I would really appreciate your help i have a 1998 ford escort gti which has started to develop a problem with the drivers lock,
When you dead lock the car it seems to jam the drivers lock and wont open and if i try and open it from the passenger side the central locking goes crazy.
It seems to be fine if i just lock it without activating the dead locking system if that makes any sense. i would really appreciate any help before i strip the door down as don't really know what to look for.
Thanks in advance,

The change between main and dipped beam on the "doggy waggon" has become slow with a delay of about half a second between beams which means half a second of just side lights! I suspect a faulty relay but can't find it - I've tried listening for the click but can't locate it. Does anybody have any ideas?

what are you supposed to do after destroying a signpost in a supermarket carpark?
where are you, on this, with regards to police and with regards to liability.
i have a letter infront of me ready to accept the damages caused to a signpost but i would like to settle personally rather then let it effect my no claims bonus. i was hoping since it happenned on private land that this would be ok. whats the best route to take?

I agree with Avant, too! (as I thought my previous post demonstrated)
I too was brought up to believe in honesty - & I don't mind if RF refuses to believe that ;-) - AND I still believe in it.
Avant - since you have previously demonstrated in the Back Room that you are a poet, I'm a little disappointed that you have not done as Lud did and furnished us with some verse!
Don't start him off !
My son had his Megane driver-side door mirror smashed off. Has been quoted £300 or thereabouts for part and fitting. Is there any way in which this could be made less painful?
I assume you meant door not wing mirror, amended accordingly before some other pedant comes along.....not mentioning any names... Read more
that was my link b-h but your comment has gone woosh over my head?
Hi guys
I have a 1.8 1999 Ford Focus I have noticed a few problems. I had my power steering cooling rack changed on my last service by a local garage back in April this year. I have started to notice the power steering fluid going down and a few oil spots appearing under my car. I think it may be the power steering fluid leaking? Where do I stand with this garage as they replaced it last time and it was under a year ago?

I think it has been like it for a month. Under the bonet it shows the levels at cold, min and max. So i assume it must get quite hot. Do you reckon its a big problem?
My 06 1.8TDCi C-Max has now done approx 16,500 miles, and the mpg has dropped about 20% over the past few months. I used to get around 50mpg on my way to work, but now the weekly average is around 40mpg. Around town it's never been brilliant on the mpg, but its dropped from 30mpg to around 20mpg.
The engine seems to run ok - it doesn't cut out or stall. Doesn't produce masses of smoke. It has however got much more clattery, sounding more diesel-like even when warm. Obviously it will be more clattery when cold in the winter, but this is much worse than it was last year.
Additionally it doesn't seem as smooth as before. Is seems rougher, more prone to high frequency vibration, especially when idling. Also it doesn't seem quite as nippy as before.
I've switched over to use Shell and BP premium diesel fuels for the last couple of months hoping that it might help clean any unwanted deposits, but it hasn't seemed to make any difference.
It's still in warranty and I'm thinking about taking it to a dealer to get them to look at it, but as it's not actually broken down and the problems are fairly subtle, I don't have much confidence they'll be able to do anything about it.
Oh, and it definitely hasn't been misfueled. I'm utterly paranoid about it, and check the pump several times before fuelling.
Any ideas? Read more
It sounds like your timing has shifted dramatically. The camshaft position sensor is the obvious to look for. It might have becoming loose. Worth also checking the crank sensor as this is synchronised with the cam sensor. Any discrepancy could causing a timing error. Then there's the prospect of the cam belt slipping some teeth on the cam shafts...get it checked fast!
1) What effect does inflating tyres a couple of psi over the recommended amount have on tyre noise?
2) What effect does tread wear have on tyre noise - i.e. will a new tyre be quieter or noisier than one worn down to 2mm?
3) What effect does tread wear have rolling resistance - i.e. will I get better fuel economy from a new tyre or one that is worn down to 2mm?
4) How badly worn do winter tyres have to be before they are worse in snow than summer tyres - e.g. would a winter tyre with 2 mm of tread be better or worse in snow than a summer tyre with 6 mm of tread? Read more
My thoughts exactly, tyro!
I find the Auto Bild test to be very frustrating reading because I am still trying to justify getting an extra set of tyres for winter use in the SE UK ! Also note the details of summer tyre are not once specified in the article. Plus, judging from the number plates, the snow tests were carried out in Japan (last winter?) and all the others in Germany (it doesn't look too wintery in the photos).
My conclusion from the Auto Bild data is:
[1] the performance on snow of a summer tyre compared to the winter and all season tyres is shockingly bad. E.g. "Braking on snow from 50 kph: the AUDI stops on the Vredestein after 28 meters, the all season Goodyear needs an additional car length. The summer tyre continues to slip for another 33 meters."
[2] However, in every single safety test on wet and dry roadways the summer tyre was superior although sometimes not by much. "Aquaplaning: as expected the summer tyre has the least problems, upto 93 km/h keeps the tyre in contact with the roadway. With the winter tires only the Vredestein offers similar security reserves, the Sportiva already aquaplanes above 75 km/h." "Braking in dry from 100 kph: Against the summer the winter tire does not have a chance with a full brake. Already with the all season tyre the braking distance extends by one and a half vehicle lengths." (Summer tyre 39.5m, Goodyear 45.9m). All the other winter tyres are worse.
[3] in the noise test, the summer tyre was within 2% of the winner. Most winter tyres are not significantly noisier than summer ones.
[4] as you say, surprisingly, the summer tyre had the largest rolling resistance on test. "A five percent lower rolling resistance reduces fuel consumption by one percent. Then the Michelin Primacy Alpine saves seven percent fuel compared with the summer tyres."
Does anyone have any other tests between summer and winter tyres?
Hi, any one know anything about these cars?.
I'm hoping some one can help me out I'm thinking of buying one Saab 93, 1997 to 1999 model from the U.K can anyone give me some tips on what to watch out for.
I've only got around 1500£ so it will have high millage should I avoid the turbo and what would be considered high millage or too higher millage (if you follow).
Also, I've seen some in Auto-trader pritty cheap but the adds been there for some time would this be a warning maybe that the cars a little dogey.
Any help really as I'm no expert I will be driving the car over to Sweden so it needs to get there at least lol.
Hoping someone can help out many thanks.

Everest Pete thanks for that, yes I see what your saying about the ford focus I think more like 2000£ will get me one as for the S40 it's just all about it being reliable but you do get a lot of car for your money.
Regarding the Saab surely if the works been done on the bulk head the seller would mention this in the add, I have yet to see one that has.
Cheers.Jon
I've come by a little 5'x3' trailer, plywood and angle iron. Questions:
Inside the car is a switch for the trailer lights. It's got "Manual", "Auto", "Sensor off" positions. What are these for?
How can I find out, or estimate, the payload? The bit which clips over the tow ball has "AT 750Kg" on it, and "S 75Kg" - are these maximum for the component? I find it hard to believe that the trailer is OK for 750Kg, and can't find another plate on it.
Do I need a car-type number plate, or can I make up a decent DIY one and be road-legal?

145R 10 Mini tyres were Load Index 68, which would give a gross trailer weight of 568kg - the tyre industry recommends that trailer tyres aren't loaded beyond 90% of their rated capability.
That switched device is definitely not standard Vauxhall Cavalier. The unbraked trailer limit for '95 Cavaliers was 500-660kg, depending on model.

(just seen the 'take the fuse out' idea in another post- worth a try...if I ever get back in again, that is)
