Broken door mirror - cost - tack
My son had his Megane driver-side door mirror smashed off. Has been quoted £300 or thereabouts for part and fitting. Is there any way in which this could be made less painful?

I assume you meant door not wing mirror, amended accordingly before some other pedant comes along.....not mentioning any names...

Scrapyard or search of on-line car breakers. If the mirror is body-coloured then painting it adds to the cost but for such a small item I would imagine DIY spraying from a can would produce a satisfactory result if you can't find a mirror in the right colour.

Would definately be worth trying a motor factors. I replaced the one on my old Mondeo recently and had to paint the casing as well and with a little persistence got a finish on it that I was quite proud of. By doing it that way it brought the cost down from about £200 to under £100. Give it a go!

My Honda Civic one needed replacing 2 years ago

Local Honda garage quoted £90 painted new mirror (IIRC) + VAT + fitting.

It was worth watching it - door card off, wing mirror off, new one on, door card back - 8 minutes - the girl on reception was new - she looked at 8 mins and charged me 1/6th of the hourly rate - about £10 inc VAT.

I was out the door before the msitake was noticed as their rules are 1 hour minimum labour charge for any work - Under £120 in total

SEL Imperial aren't too bad on price for aftermarket parts but there are cheaper suppliers, possibly ones here on the backroom ;-)
