Saab-93 thinking of buying one need advise - jonrice
Hi, any one know anything about these cars?.

I'm hoping some one can help me out I'm thinking of buying one Saab 93, 1997 to 1999 model from the U.K can anyone give me some tips on what to watch out for.

I've only got around 1500£ so it will have high millage should I avoid the turbo and what would be considered high millage or too higher millage (if you follow).

Also, I've seen some in Auto-trader pritty cheap but the adds been there for some time would this be a warning maybe that the cars a little dogey.

Any help really as I'm no expert I will be driving the car over to Sweden so it needs to get there at least lol.

Hoping someone can help out many thanks.

Jon.

Jon,
Mileage is less important than service history. Anything over 70K and original clutch expect it to be VERY stiff, and factor into purchase price clutch replacement if you intend to keep it. Otherwise an impressive car; excellent ride and comfort. Go for a 2.0ltr non turbo or 2.3 non turbo if you can find one-you may occasionally see 28+MPG out of it! Or a 2.2 diesel, as long as you can stand the noise, and see 35-40 MPG. Also check for rust mainly on rear wheel arches-mainly 3 door versions - surprisingly for a swedish car this seems quite common.
You might also consider the very last of the 900 (same shape, worse handling) for the money you may even be lucky to pick up a nice limited edition Talladaga which was the last special model prior to the 93.

Hope this helps,

Pete

Probably asking something that's already been answered somewhere but why does the clutch get so stiff on the higher mileage Saabs?

Great advise thanks very much.

Yes been looking at the 900 too if I can find one with service history and lowish millage.

Thanks again.

I've been happily driving a 1998 Saab 900 Talladega for 7 years (& an old model 900 for 10 yrs before that), but one £650 repair a year ago (which Saab unexpectedly - to me - chipped in 50%) was for a cracked bulkhead. Main dealer sent it out to a specialist body firm for the fix. Well, I didn't have to look far on the internet to find that this bulkhead weakness is the GM 900/9-3's dirty little secret. Saab have been paying out varying percentages of repair costs, even for high-mileage, way-out-of-warranty cases like mine, and this doesn't seem to have been reported in the mainstream motoring press.
I don't want necessarily to put you off this model, as I've been otherwise really happy with mine, but you might check out for example the SaabScene forum.

Slow Eddie, thanks for sharing that I read the hole tread and I have to say that has put me of totally, I will be useing this car in Sweden too so the chance of getting such a prolem fixed for nothing will be zero. But then again with the sweeds its safty first so thay might just fix it for free I have no logic behind this thought just a feeling.

I might call Saab Sweden tomorrow see what thay say.

ooh dear what a shame feel sorry for the people who have to bear the costs themselfs.

Well anyone got any other suggestions on a car for 1500£ maybe the 9000?.

Cheeers. Jon

Having owned the 900 I would say don't bother.
For £1500 have a look at the Volvo 940 thread. These should still be relatively cheap to run if you're taking one to Sweden.

After reading up on Saabs I've been put of to be honest, fine if you have the money to repair them but I don't so it's looks like a Ford focus for me or maybe a Volvo S40 but I'm not sure how relible thay are can't seem to find much on them (the older model).

Ford Focus is mega reliable there are millions of them worldwide in various guises doing everything thats asked of them.

Thanks for the link.

I like the idea of a ford focus but saying that the S40's in the U.K seem pritty cheap so it tempting to go for one hmmm.

On a budget of £1500 you'll not get much of a Focus but you may get a S40 in good nick. Had one for about 6 months between jobs and found it an excellent car-and more comfortable than the 'experts' suggest in reviews. And the 1.6 is fine unless you are a boy racer. Never missed a beat and felt far more upmarket than its price/age gave it any right to! Only thing is I believe mechanics don't like them when they do go wrong, although I've no idea why...
Also, this problem with 900/93's bulkhead IS a well know fault, but at the price bracket you are looking at the chances are it has already gone and been fixed-if you still consider one, just try to check if it has. And finally, the clutch is always fairly heavy on this model, age and miles just makes it worse, but they don't actually usually stop working any earlier than any other vehicle.

As I understood it, the Volvo S40 was just based on a common platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma.

Despite the shared platform, the S40 and Carisma are not the same car. Of the 5,000 parts on the cars, 4,000 were unique to each. Of the remainder, 650 were produced by Volvo and 350 by Mitsubishi. Volvo's traditional emphasis for safety and ergonomics were thus easily identifiable in these models too.

PS I hope I don't get done for plagarism, most of the above was lifted form the fountain of knowledge (Wikipedia)

Everest Pete thanks for that, yes I see what your saying about the ford focus I think more like 2000£ will get me one as for the S40 it's just all about it being reliable but you do get a lot of car for your money.

Regarding the Saab surely if the works been done on the bulk head the seller would mention this in the add, I have yet to see one that has.
