The following was taken from HJ's news article on the the Friday 14th car auction,
"But either the vendor pushed the auctioneer to run it to an unviable £7,100, or there were simply no bids."
Question is, do auctioneers take bids "off the wall" at car auctions to try and get a sale going.

Who uses their headlights even during the day?

I heard that people who use their lights in the day are 35% less likely to be pulled out on causing them to brake than people who dont.

Unless its bright sunshine i always like to put my lights on especially now the days are a bit dull and the light after work is fading.

:) Batteries work better if used. Sitting idle does nothing for their longevity, you get build up on the plates when they do not charge/discharge.
I'm sure the little guys enjoy a quick circuit round the battery internals too...:)

My wife has quite an unusual 5-letter name, which I would quite like to track down as a number plate. Any ideas how to do this? DVLA just says 'sold', doesn't say when.

I would at least like to know what car it's on, or if it's on a car at all. A search on an insurance website gives no car details, but perhaps this is usual for personal plates. Or perhaps it is owned by a plate dealer???? Read more

It seems my old 1966 Norton is still on the road! Wonder where, and if the gearbox, rebearinged and case welded up by the Hanks brothers in Birmingham, is still the original.

Hi All

We're looking for a replacement for my wifes car. We want something which can accomodate up to 4 children and 1 adult or 2 adults and 3 children with luggage but don't want an mpv type car. The CRV and X Trail seem to fit the bill and are in budget (02/03 reg for ~£5500).

Have read the CBCB and other reviews.

Does anyone have any experience of these cars?

Thanks

Hi, i hope you can help. i have a 98 ford fiesta and recently i have been getting a sort of winding down whining noise when i brake and go down through the gears... somebody has suggested this may be the gearbox and a lack of oil? would this explain why my oil light comes on under braking. i have just had an oil change last month.

thanks,,,

A friend of afriend bought an R32 a couple of months back. Within a week or so the gearbox failed. It was replaced and again afew weeks later the gearbox failed again.

This time he got a new car as it was deemed a lemon.

What happens to this car - does it become a low mileage / 1 owner on tyhe forecourt or what? Read more

we've been over this so many times, you don't know for certain what you get even with a new car. Quite a few times we had to smash windows in new cars to retrieve lost keys in a hurry, the problem was covered up by fitting OEM glass from a used car as even we couldn't get a perfect match with the original stuff.

I've crashed at least one brand new car that I can remember before it even had it's plates fitted, a quick trip to the bodyshop for a rear end respray (and maybe a new panel looking at the scrape) and it was handed over to a very happy buyer. Another salesman I knew even managed to deploy the airbags in a new Focus after sliding into a roundabout, yes, you've guessed it, that one was handed over too! Although I must admit that the customer was informed about that one (and amazingly still took it) as we thought that was a little beyond what was acceptable damage for a new car! :-)

That's why I wouldn't hesitate to buy a nearly new car, they're much cheaper and are just as likely to have had the niggles ironed out as they are to be a lemon.

Oh, and yes, anything that was ever handed back under warranty was stuck back on the forecourt, although in some cases after a lot of work had been done to make sure the car was sorted.

With the increase in fuel costs and having listened to the radio this morning I have decided that it could be time time to start using vegetable oil, on a 50/50 basis sort of fill up drive a couple of 100 miles add vegetable oil,and vary it.
Any considerations on using it with a 2.2 dc renault espace, suitability and whether it's a good idea or not. Read more

I have a problem with the central-locking on my 1994 Cavalier. The front passenger door has become permanently deadlocked, so I can?t open it using the key in the driver's door, and the button won?t lift manually. The driver?s door, both rear doors and the boot lock/unlock deadlock normally from the key in the driver?s door.

I presume that the problem is with a switch or motor inside the passenger door itself, but that gives me the major problem of accessing the inside of the door when I can?t open it!

Is there a manual way to ?un-deadlock? the door in these circumstances?

Alternately what are my chances of removing the passenger door trim panel, with the door closed, without significant damage?

Any advice is most welcome.

Hi,
1910cc - 100TDiesel

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what can be done to fix this cylinderhead.
img529.imageshack.us/img529/4852/img0006dj0.jpg

You see the water way bottom left has clearly defined edges - as it should be.
water way bottom right has corrosion round the edges, a lot of the water ways are like this, and as shown are corroded on the side next to the piston chamber. The corrosion is such that it eats into what should be the "no-mans land"/face between waterway and piston chamber The corrosion is quite deep 1mm or more so skimming will not remove the corrosion without ruining the cylinderhead.

Is there anyway this can be welded and then skimmed? How much would that cost? there are about 10 - 15 waterways affected.

Or do I just shove it back together and hope for the best, when / if it fails again, scrap it.

Thanks

The water pipe bit is referring to a thin metal gasket between a water pipe and the cylinder head, I was asking can I reuse this gasket? Probably better not to as it dealing with water. Sorry I was not too clear on that bit.

I may-re use the exhaust one. Guess it depends how much they cost new.

I think any repair of the cylinder head is going to be too expensive - but I was curious if it something that people do or something that theoretically can be done. I'll throw the lot back together and see what happens.

I have been advised to use a bit of blue hylomar on the metal rim around each piston, not touching the black gasket (as far as is possible) because these Astradur gaskets like to have a clean surface.

That would have reasonably appropriate near the end of the story if the journalist had been so minded, but the catalyst for the piece was the daughter's injuries as a result of the incident.
