My wife has quite an unusual 5-letter name, which I would quite like to track down as a number plate. Any ideas how to do this? DVLA just says 'sold', doesn't say when.
I would at least like to know what car it's on, or if it's on a car at all. A search on an insurance website gives no car details, but perhaps this is usual for personal plates. Or perhaps it is owned by a plate dealer????

It might be possible to at least find out what make/model of car it is on if any but you would be spending a very long time on the DVLA site by inputting the no plate repeatedly against different makes/models of cars from a very long list.
It could also be on a van, bike or retention certificate or it may never have been issued from the vast millions of combinations the DVLA still retain.......good luck.

Have you tried simply putting the numbers into Google?

Curious, would google find the plate from a traders list if it were available.

My father used to have a personalised numberplate. He also had a book listing all the personalised plates in existence with details of their owners (where known), history etc.
My mother still has the book, which must be quite old. I am happy to look it up next time I am there, if that would help - given details!
A search on Amazon reveals some possible more recent versions of the book.

Go to www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/. Click "Vehicle Enquiry". Enter the registration number. Try a vehicle make. Repeat with a different make until you find the car.
That should keep you busy.

Or, go here:
www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/status_checks/?&li...s
and just type the registration number in the "single check - buy now" box, and click the button.
It will tell you manufacturer, model, year & engine size.

What a useful link I have just typed the reg plate of a suspicious looking white van that stopped outside my house twice this morning (house is on it's own) and bingo!! it doesn't exist.
I have an email address from our neighbourhood watch scheme to report anything suspicious and will get that off right away.

And the number I had on a 1957 James Captain 197 villiers motorcycle is now attached to a BMW SE touring...........the number CB 47, I swopped that bike for a scooter .

and my perfect pratplate - my 2 letter initials, suffixed with 1, is attached to a 1994 BMW 325 - the plate must be worth 10 times the value of the car :-)

In order to give my wife personalised plates, I changed her name by deed poll to DVT 166T.
She was delighted with my ingenuity.

It seems my old 1966 Norton is still on the road! Wonder where, and if the gearbox, rebearinged and case welded up by the Hanks brothers in Birmingham, is still the original.
