Big Bad Dave

A Polish friend of my wife back in the UK has received a NIP for speeding in an area in which he has never been, in a car which he has never driven. The car is owned by a garage where he was employed illegally some time ago to wash cars etc. He was never permitted to drive any of them. If the circumstances are to be believed it appears someone working at the garage with access to his details has used him as a scapegoat.

What's the best course of action? He was about to pay up just to make it go away, but I suggested that this might get him in even deeper doo doo with insurance and who knows where it might end.

How serious an offence is it to knowingly pervert the course of justice in this way? Read more

He wasn't made registered keeper - just named as the driver by the RK

Yes it's showing full history but the book is a duplicate? not sure if thats bad or not the air filter was a merc part & bosch fuel filter,
This car belongs to my grandad who dosen't do big mileage but he wanted a merc! so he got one and a nice car to drive it is 52,000mls on the clock good underneath original exhaust should be ok for a few years yet!
The issue with the filter is stupid what if some drivers are in large city's where there's lots of building work been done the car sucks all this crap up & 24,000mls is just daft in my opinion!!

have a 1999 Nissan Terrano 2 2.7 turbo diesel with an unusual problem - lately I have had trouble starting it when its hot, sometimes it wont start at all - leave it 20 mins or so and eventually it will fire up. starts normally from cold in a morning and once started it runs perfectly. just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar or has any idea of what could be wrong. Thanx Nige.

check the fuel lines as one may be getting hot and temporarily closing/kinking but still allowing just enough fuel through whilst it runs

Looking at possibly changing the Scenic for a used Audi A3 2.0 TDi SE 5 DOOR (around 18 months / 2 years old). Have looked at main dealer but they want all the money and I suspect will only offer book for my scenic. Thinking about selling privately or even buying privately depending on the figures involved

BBC Reports:
A groom who was driving too fast to meet guests and a mother caught with her son standing in her car foot well have been criticised by police. The 39-year-old bridegroom was caught driving at 107mph on the A947 Aberdeen to Turriff road at the weekend.

Police said that if he had crashed, his guests could have ended up going to his funeral instead. The 37-year-old woman was reported for carrying her eight-year-old son in a dangerous manner - unrestrained in back.

There were a total of 162 motorists found to be exceeding the limit on Grampian's roads at the weekend.

A roads in Aberdeenshire are not the straightest/widest - to average 45mph on a journey is pretty good going - 107mph !!!

Not very fast by
modern standards on a 500 single.

So it wasn't a BSA Gold Star then.

They were horribly fast. And what's more there weren't any helmets or radial tyres.

It's amazing anyone over a certain age is still alive actually.

A few months ago I changed my V reg 406 HDI 2.0l (110) for an 04 reg 307 HDI 2.0l (110). Most of my journeys are straight up and down the M4, the 406 returned >50mpg over the time I had it. The 307 however, barely gives me ~45mpg. Both measured by brim to brim fill ups and recorded milage in between - no reliance on computers, other than my Excel spreadsheet!

I far as I am aware it is exactly the same engine (though 5 years newer - so should be better?) in a smaller car so why would my fuel consumption be so much worse? Generally my driving style/speed remains unchanged - though I would say that the 307 is much livelier so I probably accelerate more briskly, but as I say, 90% of my driving time is spent pootling down the M4 at 70-80mph - exactly as before.

Any thoughts? Read more

Thanks for replies - all make good sense. And yes, it does have wider tyres - 205 vs 195.

Looks like I'll have to console myself with the knowledge that (for the mileage I do) the saving in VED just about balances the cost of the higher fuel consumption.........either that or learn to restrict my speed to 50mph!

Sally's become an institution, but Lynn Bowles proves equally likeable and with a mischievous sense of fun:

Why has knee deep mist in the fields prompted about 25% of drivers to use front and rear fog lights? Read more

Yesterday I went down the M1 in rain from Chesterfield towards Nottingham.
Surface water went from average to flooding to dry, depending on the quality of tarmac, but rain was falling at the same rate. Rear fog lights were not needed when the water drained away effectively but definitely were when cars dissapeared into the spray.

Hello all :-)

I've just done a search on the new fandangled ... search and couldn't see where this had been covered but I'm sure it has so please feel free to point me in the right direction!.

I have a 52 TDCi and the coil warning light comes on intermitently - flashing constantly (no breaks in between) and the beast goes into limp-home mode - but when I take it to the dealer and they run the diagnostic, say theres nothing wrong and it just needs a "reboot" - its fine for a couple of months and then it happens again!

Its driving me mad as its costing to run the diagnostic every time - so surely there must be something wrong with it - I've had it 2 years and its happened about 6 times - but this time its happened twice in 2 weeks and Im running out of patience.

Fuel consumption is fine, runnings good so why does it keep doing this???

Im going to be selling it soon - not cos of this but cos I've just got a new company car (Focus Ghia 2.0 petrol - now I know why everyone goes on about the "handling" - nice but it doesn't half take time to accelerate - certainly missing my TDCi on slip roads!!! - sorry, I digress)

Aha! Sounds like a plan!

Will definitely try the reboot by unhooking the battery - hopefully it'll take it off the "gimp home mode" ;-)

Am I imagining that the fuel injector/warning light thing is a known challenge with these Mondeos ... Im sure I heard it somewhere ...

"Can someone explain how a dual carriageway can be only one lane each way? Is that not a single carriageway with a central reservation?"

Its the central resevation which divides the road into two carriageways. That's what dual carriageway means.
