Fault is heater resistor. exspensive part But can fix diy cheap.
Remove top part of dash ( 2 screw either side under speaker covers) once removed remove heater duct from n/s just above heater box
have a look at 3lib.ukonline.co.uk/scenic/trouble.html
here you will see the part and how to remove the resistor pack.
This is a fairly common fault and is down to a faulty resistor pack next to the fan motor. The resistor pack is relatively cheap, at £50 or so. Replacing the pack isn't trivial, although reader Barney Owsnett managed a home-made repair for next to no money at all. Barney:"Firstly, take out the pollen filter (if fitted) then get upside down in the passenger footwell and look up into the air chamber. You will see the resistor pack, but you won't have much of a chance carrying out the repair. Too get to the little beastie, I had to take off the top of the dash, as per the Haynes Manuel. Once that's out of the way, you will seen the left hand air vent tube, it's got a thin sponge cover. This has to be pulled from the centre console air ducting and from the left hand air vent. It does come off, it just needs a good 'yank'. Underneath this trunking, you will then see the top of the resistor pack and you can now undo the little grub screw that holds the resistor pack onto the air box. Once this is undone you can lift the resistor pack out and undo the electrical connections, 4 in total, with one underneath the sponge cover below the dash. The biggest of the 3 connections ia a bit of a funny set up, as you will see a red ribbed 'tab' at one end. This simply pulls away from the main body and as it does so, it releases the connection. The fuse is easily identified, as it's the only one there, simply cut off its 'legs' as close to the fuse as posible, and bend them up at right angles. Using a 5 amp 'Choc Block' connector, with the plastic cut off, screw one of them (2 small screws) onto each leg. Now take a new Thermal Fuse and bend its legs at right angles, you'll probably need to trim them down a bit, and screw the legs into the empty choc block connector. Once you have replaced the thermal fuse, it all goes back together in reverse order. Give yourself a big pat on the back as it's only cost you a few pence. The fuses are available over the counter at Maplins. Read the thermal fuse rating from the side of the old fuse before you throw it away, mine was 192c, thats the temperature it blows at. A nice cheap repair."
Informative, but who asked the question ??

Good evening!
I have a 51 reg Vectra 1.8 LS, with 96000 on the clock. Apart from tyres & brakes etc, everything was fine, until the last 2 months (owned the car from 11 months old, 12000 on the clock.) The car is the Z18XE engine model.
Approaching a roundabout one day, as I droppped into 2nd, the engine started misfiring. It was like this for over a week, then corrected itself? I've replace the spark plugs twice, and changed the DIS module (after parting with £59 for a Vauxhall TECH2 non-diagnostic test) Engine management light on.
After a couple of weeks of happy 4-cylinder motoring - back to 3-cylinders, engine management light on. Left the engine running at tickover for a few minutes, then turned it off & back on again, hey presto back to 4 cylinders! Management light off
A couple of days ago, it went back onto 3 cylinders. On previous occasions it ran OK, before dropping onto 3 pots after maybe 5 seconds. Now its on 3 cylinders straight from turning the key.
The cam belt was replaced at 90000 miles. Could it be the cam belt needing tensioning? The engine will rev round the clock still even though its quite rough? Just co-incidental the troubles started soon after?
I've also cleaned out the throttle body with carb cleaner, and ran the car with Redex injector cleaner after the first instance of misfiring.
Other routes I'm looking at - oxygen sensors, cat collapsed(?), injectors.
Has anybody else had similar troubles with the late 1.8 vectra? Any help to cure the misfire greatly appreciated!

vauxhall only sell them i sets of 4. (money grabbers!)
Have you tried sourcing them from someone else - eg autovaux?
Sister just bought a Vauxhall Corsa P registered. When she switch the radio/cassette player on nothing happens. The unit switches on. The display on dashboard changes from showing the clock to a text which says 'SAFE'. Does that mean she needs to have a code for the unit? The previous owner does not have the code. The car had the alternator changed recently so the battery was disconnected.
What can she do? Visit Vauxhall and ask for the code? What is the procedure and how much are we looking at?
Also do the basic corsa only have two speakers or four speakers? Read more
Cheers Topbloke! Just the info I needed having had my starter motor replaced. I had done it before but those brain cells must have expired...
Hi All
Currently trying to decide between an 18month old XC90 D5 SE (185bhp version) Geartronic with Sat Nav+Phone+Privacy glass+Winter pack thats done 25k miles and a new XC70 D5 SE Lux manual with Family pack on a 2 year discounted PCP via my work.
Deposits and monthly repayments are about the same (within a few quid) and I planned to keep the XC90 for 2 years, which in "theory" should give me a bit of equity when selling. But the lure of a newer car and the better drive, handling & economy of the XC70 are very tempting but the XC90 still has the 7 seat option which is useful for my large family.
Looking for any owners who have experience of these cars to help me decide !
Many Thanks

...I was horrified at the high volume of engine noise. I expect any engine to be loud >> at full throttle but the D5 was just unbearable at idle and at low speed.
That does surprise me. I have not driven an XC70 but I do have that engine in an S60 and it's barely audible below 4000rpm.
Maybe a result of extra ground clearance or the propshaft ?
I have a problem with my Ford Focus (2002 1.6 petrol Zetec).
As people may know these eat up heater resistors - after the second one failed on me in two weeks I used the fan only on maximum (which bypasses the resistor) but then the heater fan fuse blew - twice. After replacing it the fan then stopped working altogether accompanied by a burning smell. The fuse is still ok but the fan is kaput.
Any ideas? Has water perhaps got in somewhere, I know the pollen filter is a leak point on Focus' but there is no sign of damp in the footwell etc.

Just adding a detail from my local parts supplier.
The resistors can burn out because the pollen filter gets blocked, overloading the fan. It's worth looking at this too. (pollen filter is above the fan motor and accessed through the engine bay. Its under a plastic cover at the bottom of the windscreen, which is removed by one screw and six clips.)
For me, this plastic cover was poorly re-fitted after a service => water entered the cabin => pollen filter got wet (amongst other things) => resistor got overloaded. Not using that garage again!
I love this.... just think the pilot should not have stopped it, of course these radar devices are accurate!
Top this for a speeding ticket...
Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road. One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.
Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.
Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office.
Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style:
'Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto, your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert status, and was able to override the automated defence system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was destroyed.
Good Day...'

Just found this today. Totally unrelated to motoring, other than to get to this village, you will drive/ride through some of the most inspiring and beautiful roads in the UK.
Does anyone know ( or measure ) the following dimension on 99-05 Zafira
Folded seats to rear hatch ( length )
Distance between wheels arches.
Load height from floor to roof.
I've tried to search on the net but I can only find the dimensions for the new Zarifa or else the volume.
I need to transport fixed size boxes and so I need to know the actual dimensions and not just the volume.
I'm trying to decide whether a small MPV will be enough or whether to go for the larger MPVs such as a Galaxy. The main problem is having to remove the seats as I travel long distances but may need the seats ( only 5 not all 7 ) at the other end.
Does anyone have any suggestions for any other suitable vehicles?. I'm not keen on the van variants Partner, Berlingo etc.

Always interesting to read a review of a car you've owned for a few years. I don't know how the AA managed to get the fuel consumption at 70 mph down to 33mpg, SWMBO's 1.8 is doing around 38 mpg at that speed, even loaded with aircon on. Glad I paid the extra for a 1.8 versus the 1.6 the AA tested :-).
If there are any dimensions missed from the AA report the OP needs I can get my tape measure out this evening.
Looking at a number of used BMW 5 series diesels (530 and 535d). Can any backroomers tell me if the engines have a timing belt or are they chain driven. A lot of the cars we have looked at seem to have around 60k on the clock. I would not like to buy and then get hit with a big bill for a timing belt change. Read more
Should last the life of the engine if the car is serviced. By the time they need changing it would not be economically viable to do so!
A general question and not make/model specific. {choice now dropped - DD}
So, for example, if you take a 32 Amp battery and you have a 65 Amp alternator, would it charge it from flat in half an hour? Unlikely I'm thinking, so how quickly can a battery charge?
I realise an alternator has to be capable of running the lights, heated rear window, wipers and everything else plus charge the battery. How much charge can an alternator produce and how dependant is it on engine speed? Anyone know? Read more
how long's a piece of string! all the previous replies are right, there are loads of variables condition and capacity of battery condition and out put of charging device, temperature etc.
I have a 2001 Clio 1.2 Petrol and the warning light for monitoring exhaust gas has started to flash. Handbook says 'reduce engine speed until the light stops and consult a dealer'. Not sure what this might be. Can anyone help? Read more
i have this problem freash this morning. this normaly happens after its been raining etc i have read into it and have found a possible cure for this is to remove the crankshaft sensor (which i think is under the black box) and squirt it with wd 40 apperntly this is quite a common problem with clios
what size fuse did you use. i cant see any thing on mine i imagine there the same
