Hi does anyone have any experience of these engines in relation to reliability etc, especially at higher mileages. I think it has a chain driven cam, is this correct? I am looking at an Astra with a 89 BHP version fitted to it. Yes I know it will be slow compared to the 1.7 100bhp or the 1.9 engine but fuel economy is the number one priority for the car. Read more
I just would like to know if Nissan 2.0TD engines which they've in Primeras or first generation Almera are any good and what sorts of MPG do they return? Thanks

I think I'll avoid them. My main reason for looking for a diesel option is economy and if its as economical as petrol then I'll opt for petrol one.
I have been looking at the new Laguna as a possible replacement. I am sure it's a far better car than the old model in many ways but it looks a bit dull. Ugly even. Maybe it will grow on me.
Not sure the 1.5dCi engine will be a good match - the 2.0dCi would be my choice.
Anyone else seen it yet? Read more
Renault quality took a dive around 2000 and remained a bit ropey until 2003. Renaults built since 2003 are much better and the warranty claims now are one-fifth of what they were five years ago. It will take a while for the public perception to change.
Can any locals guide me about how long to allow to get from J12 to J7 mid day Saturday? Read more
firstly there ain't anything close to Junc 7 going south, so you be going northwards, and secondly shouldn't you be preparing yourself for the England game and ensuring you don't conceed anything, not taxiing around the m25
Hi Folks, a colleague's son has just bought one of these. Unfortunately it only came with one main key, is a visit to the dealer (£157) the only option or is there anyway of doing it more more reasonably ? (They are trying to contact the previous owner btw)
Thanks in advance Read more

He can clone the Fiat transponder keys, maybe worth a go. Good luck.
As the police (well scamera partnerships) often get a hammering every now and then, I thought I?d add a positive note.
My sons push bike got nicked on Friday from our front garden and was duly noted to the police for a crime number. As luck would have it, driving home from work last night I spotted it chained to some railings. A call to the police confirmed I could remove the lock, and they would send a panda if they had one free. It took a while, but one turned up complete with heavy duty bolt cutters and the bike was transferred to my boot, while the lock went away for forensics.
So a big thank you to Avon and Somerset Police for their help, especially as I now have a very happy son who will lock up his bike in future.
(Sorry mods if this is not that car related)

Does this mean that once 'stolen' property has passed thro police hands and then sold off, any subsequent owner becomes the rightful owner and the property cannot be reclaimed by the original owner? What about if the police pass an item back to a finder?
Or if the original owner then spots it for sale he can he can then just seize it, as with the bicycle above? Looks like a can of worms or a licence for lawyers to make money;)
If you have come 'unknowingly' into possession of any iffy article the best thing to do is to hand it in as lost / found and hope to take ownership at the end of 12 months.

I have a 2001 1.3 fiesta. I?m having problems accelerating, when I push the accelerator the engine revs as if it?s not in gear for about 5 seconds and then the car quietens downs and my speed steadily increases. I don?t have a clue about cars and have been ripped off by garages in the past; does anyone have any ideas before I take it to a garage? Thanks Read more
cheapest aint always best, have you asked wether its a remanufactured or reconditioned clutch & wether it includes hydraulics because if its any of these you might as well tip you hard earnt dosh down the drain!.
Have it done properly which will mean having it done once with no excuses of a misley warranty that if you dont go back & have it checked every three months the warranty will be void!
Doc
I don't suppose you do. So what when you're away from home and your car is towed - and you have to produce driving licence, V5 and proof of address.
Westminster (see previous thread) didn't seem to care too much when they towed my friend's car; despite giving a long list of required documents - but she had her driving licence with her.
Strikes me as bizarre, for who would pay several hundreds to release a car that was not theirs anyway?

I'm carrying mine around with me at the moment, but only because the plates got stolen off the car last week and therefore (having reported this to the Police) there is a rather greater chance of me being stopped at the moment.
Guys,
Got a problem with the idle on my 306 (1.6 TU5 engine) - 1997.
I want to replace the stepper motor but for the life of me I just cant seem to find it!
Does anyone know where it's located on the TU5 1.6 engine??
Thanks all.

'97 is near a change year; have a look in your VIN number for xxNF?xxxx - that's the engine code and will help.
It might be on the throttle housing on a late one with the long coilpack.
My previously 100% reliable 328i touring broke down on me this morning. The engine simply started running a little rough which I thought might clear when the traffic started to move off but instead it cut out and wouldn't restart. The starter initially tried to start the car but after say 5/6 attempts the engine no longer turned over.
The car is 1995 with 104k and full BMW service history the most recent completed 3 weeks ago. Could this be a Nikasil issue? Read more
These old 3 series models are reliable in the engine management dept. However at this age and mileage the fuel pump could be suspect or another common problem is the wiring to the fuel pump that sits under the pump/sender unit housing plate (in tank)becomes brittle and fractures on the crimp post.Pump unit sits under back seat ,drivers side.hth

Dsuk, we had an Astra estate 1.3td on hire in Portugal and real-world economy was pretty poor, as the thing needed a bit of a thrashing to get anywhere. Although it´s a pretty impressive feat to move a car that size with a 1.3 diesel anyway
The 1.7 diesel engine got a good writeup in an Italian mag I read recently - 120ps I think.
