On the news this morning it was announced that a new longer theory test would be introduced very shortly. Apparently its an hour long and pretty stiff. I reckon I wouldn't stand much chance of passing that without hours of study. Perhaps theory is not the priority, maybe extra time actually driving would be better, what do you think ? Read more

Round The Bend

Received my renewal notice last week and, after a quick online check, I found that I could reduce it by over a third if I moved to Swift. Wondered if anyone out there is a Swift policy holder and if their experiences were positive.

Many Thanks,

Round The Bend

To update the thread. I decided to go with Swift. To top up the coverage to match that provided by Norwich Union, I purchased the courtesy car extension and the legal assistance. Even with these add ons, the price was £210 - saving £100 on my renewal quote from NU.

Very much an online operation with certificate, schedule and policy available on your designated webspace. To prove your NCB allowance you scan and email a copy of your renewal quote. Phone numbers in case of claim are provided. An additional text hit my mobile within seconds of binding.

terrible story

we had 2 cars nicked off the drive last year - fortunately did not wake us and fortunately we left keys in the hall - still sacry

what i do find a coincidence is that a colleague recently was broken into in the manchster area and had a subaru impreza and skoda fabia stolen - 3 masked youths casued serious injuries - dislocated shoulder , knocked unconscious and wife had bruises / black eyes etc. -i say broken into - what actually happened was that he heard a noise outside, opened the door and got rushed - obviosuly a mistake but it shows how alarms, panick buttons, window locks suddenly become totally irrelevent.

i can only think the safest way is to drive either old or non-flash cars - there does seem quite a bit of this in manchester area recently

Back in about 1990 someone broke into our student house when we were upstairs. The same people as the week before as they didn't manage to take everything. We phoned the police and they were there in minutes and went for a drive to see if they could see anything.

Couple of years ago neighbour's son kicked off and started trashing the house. In the end I phoned 999 because he was likely to hurt himself. Minutes later sirens heard and we said to him to calm down as it was the police for him. He didn't believe him... then to everyones surprise within 30 seconds he was pushed against the van, cuffed, and then driven off. No questions. The other police car then took details etc.

Quite shocking to see a quick reaction but resources permitting I have found the police tend to respond - in Manchester at least.

I haven't looked into the small print but on the face of it this looks a good deal for not a lot of effort.

the 'two cars stolen' thread by jdc has got me thinking....

what car would you have if you wanted something half decent, but didn't want to show out at all.

i think my choice would be a Toyota Camry V6 and get rid of the V6 badge....or is that still too showy?

jdc cars were/are good cars, but they're not necessarily what you'd imagine a car crook would want are they? Read more

Maybe go for a late mark 4 Golf (hatch or estate) with the same 130 bhp engine as the Fabia. Apart from TDI in red at the back, it looks like any other Golf.

Good luck!

LinuxGeek

Thanks guys, I'll leave it because it looks as if it'll be very costly if I'm lucky enough to find the new engine or the head.
Its got turbo so maybe even more to spend!
Thanks for all your honest opinions. Many Thanks.

What proof do you ask for when selling a car privately. Scanned the logbook and there is a part where you type in the date of birth of the buyer.

What happens if the details of the seller is false and you still send in your logbook to DVLA? Who is liable for speeding tickets etc if they cannot locate the buyer because the info given is false? Read more

Too right BB. No use blaming Swansea for any tickets you get, they are not telepathic.

Years ago there was heavy media coverage of how private buyers can buy a new car from abroad and import it saving thousands in the process.

Do people still import cars nowadays or do they find that some garages/car supermarkets offer similar deals?

If you had imported a new car recently what did you buy, from which country and what savings did you make.

Naturally i am talking about buying a RHD cars Read more
