What proof do you ask for when selling a car privately. Scanned the logbook and there is a part where you type in the date of birth of the buyer.
What happens if the details of the seller is false and you still send in your logbook to DVLA? Who is liable for speeding tickets etc if they cannot locate the buyer because the info given is false?

good point wazza but you are not the fuzz do what you feel is best ie tell any prospective purchaser they will have to bring their driving licence with them for pos details, unfortunately this may cut your customer base down by 50% so
realistically get as much info as you can
the date of birth is a legal requirement by the way
i always get the buyer to put the time they drive away on the v5c new keeper bit that they sign and date in case of later problems
you could also note the registration details of the car they came in and at their confirmation take a photo of them
might be best to just keep the old jalopy really /////? eh ;-)

The buyer commits an offence if they give incorrect/false details, but it's down to DVLA to prosecute, and not down to you to check.

While by the book you are indeed correct LY the problem lies in the fact that the seller could still be hounded as to not taking appropiate full details at time of sale. On the v5c there is even the gap for putting new keepers driving licence number in and while this is not yet compulsary in the bigger picture it cant come soonest to stop a bit of car crime, unfortunately most cars that are used illegaly are still bought as 10 bob bangers from small ads and scrapyard doors prior to going through the gate so there is no perfect answer ,this is why its in the sellers interest to get the details correct and not made up, but lied to details accepted because you get a price that you are more than happy with.
ie greed prevails

I sold a car to a customers son and he didnt bother registering it ( just asked for the V5 and took the car ). Only a £50 car so wasnt bothered. I then got three tickets through but I asked his dad, who gave me AN address, whether it was the right one for his son I dont know, but after sending back the form to the cops, I never heard another thing about it.
The next time I sold him a car, I didnt give him the V5 but registered it to his dad ( didnt like the guy much ) so that his dad would have to either take the rap or grass his son to the cops.
Needless to say, I never got any tickets for that one!
If its gonna be used illegally, then it will be and its not your problem to check the details - any criminal aint gonna give you their real details anyway. Id be more concerned if the payment is legit!

i try to keep reminding br-ers that it is their legal duty to tell swansea where the car has gone either private/trade/scrapped or exported dont blame swansea after the event
ok?

Too right BB. No use blaming Swansea for any tickets you get, they are not telepathic.
