Im taking a 93 L reg Corsa SRi off a frind of my mums in part ex on my Fiat.

Its got 103k on the clock and has just been taxed, plus has 6 months MOT on it. Colour is black and condition is quite good ( will be better when ive valeted it within an inch of its life! ).

No idea what I can sell it for privately, any ideas? Plus is there a demand for these cars. Read more

If it's clean, stick a year's ticket on it and advertise it for £695 ovno. I bet you get £500-£550 for it.

It'll be bought by a 20-something girl looking for something affordable and "a bit sporty" and who will be able to insure it no probs if she has a couple of years NCB.

£500 is nothing for a tidy small car with a bit of zip about it.

Has anyone any experience of this Alfa independent specialist? I found them on the internet and they tick all of the right boxes as being an Alfa specialist at a reasonable rate, but as it's quite a trek was wondering if anyone had actually used them for servicing & repair of more modern Alfa's (mines a 166 TS) Read more

yes, I know Ken of Alfanatic, they are highly recommended, but Roberts are about 40% cheaper on labour, mainly I suspect because they work out of an industrial unit in the middle of nowhere, but if it saves me a few hundred quid on a majot job then it's worth it, if of course they are any good, hence the mail!

hi

wonder if anyone can help, i have recently fitted a weber 32/34 to my golf 1.6 mk2, it was a second hand carb, but i refurbed it witha brand new weber service kit. When i first fit it, the floats were set too high and fuel went everywhere, after careful prodding the floats are now about 10mm, any less and it doesnt let fuel through at all...

I have had it tuned, mixture set and the timing corrected at a garage, however im having a problem with fast idle when hot, when i first start it its fine, then it seem erratic sometimes it fine and other times it revs away. Any thoughts on this at all? does it sound like a vac leak? if so what are the areas to check? i have looked at the cold air feed and read up about the flap in the airbox, mine has no flap, would this effect it so much?

suppose im just looking for advice on best where to start and what could or could not cause this?

im thinking - idel jets in carb dirty? vac leak? air pipes in wrong place?

please let me have your thoughts

Wikipedia has a long list of badge engineered (same car under different brands) vehicles worldwide.

Can we compile a list of all such cars sold in UK at present?

So far, we could find these

Suzuki Wagon R = Vauxhall Agila
Fiat Sedici = Suzuki SX4

The Isuzu Trooper and Daihatsu Fourtrak used to be popular buys in this part of the world for people who needed proper working 4x4s. Many farmers and horsey types saw them as alternatives to Discoverys and swb Defenders for towing and there are plenty still around in either station wagon or van guise.

Izuzu now sell the Rodeo pick up and Daihatsu have the Terios mini SUV, but neither company has come up with a directly replacement.

Given the ongoing popularity of 4x4s, I am curious why Isuzu and Daihatsu have never launched replacements. Can anyone shed any light on this? Read more

Daihatsu is owned/controlled by Toyota and a strategic decision was made a good few years ago that Daihatsu would concentrate on small city cars that sit below the Toyota model ranged. The UK importer (Inchcape at the time) managed to keep Fourtrak production gong for a few more years by committing to buy significant numbers of Fourtraks.

As the choice of 4x4s on the UK market grew, the Fourtrak (which had no development) became less competitive in spite of Inchcape's efforts to sex the model up with mods fitted at the UK port of entry.

Daihatsu's strategy change screwed up the importer because all its UK dealerships were in rural areas. The brand lost its way and was sold to International Motors.

Hi, hoping to get some specific information on the peugeot gti180 engine if possible. I need to find out if the variable valve timing is a simple on/off type operation or if it is a gradual change across the rev range. Also does it use the normal peugeot type 60-2 crank position sensor? A friend wants one wiring into a project car but the standard ecu is out of the equation due to the multiplex issues.

There are so many permutations that your best bet is to talk to Marelli Competition Systems [01635 270054] and see if they'll do you one.

If not; a suitable tachymetric relay would probably suffice to drive the actuator.

I used to see this old guy in the local high street driving a Lada which was covered in red "go faster stripes" and huge fog lamps on the front. When I say old, I mean he must be in his 70's, trilby hat, tartan blanket on the parcel shelf etc. He has now upgraded his car to a Pug 407SW in that delightful met' blue. My goodness! he has covered the thing in chrome strips, along the doors, bumbers, on the bonnet, hatch etc. There is more chrome than paint! Honest, I swear! His line of sight must be dodgy 'cos they are all on skew-wiff. And, he had pulled the fogs fom the Lada and put them on the Pug. Bless his cotton socks, the "Old'Boy Racer" Next thing is I will see him burning rubber in the local B&Q car park at midnight.......I'm gonna check it out! Read more

Lots of food for thought here:

Mrs Red has had an MX-5 for the last two years, which has been a bit of an indulgence. She's done about 5,000 miles in that time and we have agreed that it doesn't make sense to have £10k tied up in a car that we don't really use very much.

The second car gets used for regular 14 mile round trips and the occasional 60 mile round trip. We thought we'd like a small-ish car for easier parking at the supermarket and making the most of small parking spaces. Air conditioning is a nice to have. Our idea is to save on depreciation and risk some repair costs. We would want a maximum fuel consumption of 30 mpg.

I started wading through the CBCB looking at small hatchbacks. Mrs Red finds them a bit dull and I noticed that Mondeo sized cars appear to be going for less money. We've thought about Daewoos, Protons, Kias and Hyundais but they all lack something in appeal for us.

We're wondering about options like old Golf GTis, BMW 3 series Subarus, Saabs and the like. We would want to avoid obvious money-pits. I would be interested to see your suggestions. Read more

I called about a car up at £800 on the Autotrader site and was asking a few questions about condition and history. The guy said something like "You're asking questions about a P reg car that drives great, it's obviously not the car for you" and hung up. I couldn't believe it - I was about to arrange to view it as well. He's probably telling his mates he's had nothing but time wasters on the phone. Incredible

The boot light is not working on my 2001 Passat saloon tried the obvious and connected the unit directly to 12 volts and it works .The problem is i can't find any sort of switch in the boot area to make the light come on.Does anyone know if there is a micro switch in the lock or something similar that i could check.Don't really want to pay £65 an hour in my local VW garage just to fix a boot light when i might be able to do it myself.

The boot light is operated by a micro switch clipped to the boot latch assy.It is available seperately (without latch unit)and costs around £10 and requires removal of latch for fitting.hth

Well, call me old fashioned, but I fail to see why so many magazines list ipod compatibility along with ABS/airbags/AC etc.

How does non-ipod compatible car becomes less attractive than a compatible one?

"Radio 4 is all you need in the car - News, current affairs, plays.............
who needs more?"

I have just about every gizzmo in the car I am driving at the moment but all I I listen to is Radio 4 and the radio has to have long wave so that I can listen to the station all way from Dresden to the UK and back.
