I have a November 2004 Renault Scenic 1.9dci dynamique. The air con does not seem very cold (although we have not had much hot weather to warrant switching it on) I have an RS Thermocouple measuring instrument that I could measure the temperature. Does anyone know what sort of reading I should expect and where should I be putting the probe to measure the temp? Also if the reading is low will Renault repair or more probably re-charge the system (car is still under 3 year manufaturers warranty) or is this considered a service item, which is down to the customer? Hello all,
I would appreciate your expert opinions on buying an high mileage diesel A3. I have an opportunity to buy an Audi A3 TDI 100bhp SE 2003/03 with FSH but am concerned about the high mileage of 112,000 miles. Although this will be taken into account in the price, I am worried that I could be looking at expensive repairs or overhauls. What mileage can reasonably be expected with scheduled servicing and average luck?
What checks should I do before buying to see if engine is sound? I suppose the turbo may be worn, is there any way I can test this?
All comments appreciated. Read more
Surely A3 Golf Octavia have McPherson strut front suspension to accomodate the transverse layout?
Sorry, you are right, I had my A4 head on when I wrote this. Still, its one less thing to worry about on the A3.
Another problem now. The temp gauge does not move whilst i am driving, stays pretty much on zero. Top and bottom pipes out of the rad are bot hot and the fan kicks in every now and again. When i look at the on board computer, the oil temp is usually above 100. Also i cant find where the thermostat is.
apologise if the description sounds all jumbled Read more
Thanks Dox - I have obviously missed a different thread by OP re the joys of owning a VW!
When accelerating, there's a rather rorty noise, seemingly from the nearside front of the engine compartment (I have only heard this from inside the vehicle), as if of a blowing exhaust. The exhaust pipe is OK, however. Any ideas what it might be? It does not happen on the over-run.

It's probably the air filter housing vibrating. The Citroen mod was a couple of clips positioned to pull the housing halves together a bit harder.
My wife inadvertently failed to notify her insurers re the fitting of after-market alloys to her Grand Vitara some 4 years ago. The original tyre size was 235 / 60R16 100H and the after-market spec was 255 / 55R16 103V. She recently changed insurers and notified them of the modification. They consequently added £50 to the premium! It would appear that by not disclosing the modification to her original insurers she has been 'uninsured' for the past 4 years!
One wonders just how many 'uninsured' vehicles there are on our roads particularly with regard to the purchase of used vehicles whereby the purchaser may not be aware of modifications such as wheels and engine chipping / re-mapping etc which will undoubtedly void the insurance cover.

What is most insidious of the non specialist insurance companies, is that if they will cover you with modifications they often wont cover the modifications themselves.
Thus charging you more, but not giving any more cover.
I can cope with middle lane hoggers and tailgating but the one that gets me most is the guy on the roundabout who dosen't indicate left. You sit there waiting for them to come past you and they suddenly turn left without signalling. It happens at junctions too and is just as galling. What gets you going? Read more

At what level the oil pressure warning light comes up?
People say that coming of this light means already damage has been done to engine.
Is that true?
Do different cars set threshold pressure when this light comes out?
How much oil pressure should there be and what is the minimum limit (in psi, kPa or bar unit)? Read more
DP you could always replace your £3.95 pressure switch with a proper £52.32 sender.
OP, If you see the oil pressure light come on, then it could be bad. If you see it wink with heavy braking or cornering, then take it as a loud warning of a low oil level.
Can anyone advise me as to how much this problem is likely to cost.
I took my car(v reg vauxhall astra 1.7td) into the garage as there was a problem with the starter motor, thats what the aa told me when i called them out. the man at the garage told me that yes it was definately the starter motor and he quoted me £143 for a new starter motor including fitting.
I said yes thats fine and left the car with the garage. anyway that was on friday, he said he could do it on friday. anyway i had a call from him in the afternoon on friday thinking that the car was repaired but the mechanic said that he had ordered the wrong starter motor and that he said that he wouldnt be able to get it done until monday i said fine but he said that the reason why the starter motor was not working was because it was burnt out.
he said that there is an oil leak in the engine that must have leaked onto the starter motor and caused it to burn out. he said that unless i get the leak fixed the next starter motor would burn out also obviously if oil is leaking onto it.
What id like to know if anyone has any idea of what part of the engine is leaking onto the starter motor and ifso how much more than the £143 he quoted me for a new starter motor would it cost to get the leak fixed too?
Thanks Read more
Cant comment on the oil issue but I changed the starter motor on my Diesel x reg Astra (Isuzu engine) and what a pig of a job that was. Having to undo three bolts plus the electrics all by feel if I recall correctly. Mind you, everything about that car was a nightmare : o (
Hi
MY ABS warning light on my Ford Galaxy TDI 1999 stays on. I had a diagnostic check which indicated a sensor was faulty. The faulty sensor had a open circuit and wasnt showing any resistance although was giving a voltage .
A Ford garage has told me that if I replace the sensor the light will reset on its own. This is not the case, after fitting a new unit the light is still on. Both front sensors now show a resistance and a voltage when the wheel is turned by hand.
Does this now mean that I'll have to let Fords get their hands on it to reset the codes and charge the earth.!!!!
Can anyone please help
Thanks
Dave

Hi
Thanks for everyones advice.
After driving the car for approx 200 yards the warning light went out.
Merlin Tech - The system is from a 1999 Galaxy so hopefully the voltage surge shouldnt be a problem.
Thanks again
Dave
Topped it up today. I had checked it last week and was just above min mark so was going to up this week. Sadly the light beat me to it. Is is bad that this came up or was it ok if i topped it shortly after? Read more
It'll be fine
Bob in the three years I had my Scenic, the air con broke twice.
Both times the dealer said not warranty and chargeable. Took to a private air con dealer and first timehe diagnosed what was wrong and that it should be covered under warranty. Took back to dealer told them what theexpert had said and it was duly covered under warranty.
Just before I sold it the air con was poor again. Back to same guy who re-gassed it and this made a huge difference. An easy way to tell is if the pipe coming from the air con unit goes cold (its under the engine on the drivers side). When air con was regassed and switched to cold, this pipe was (almost) freezing cold.
Regas was £40.
IIRC the compressor won't start if the gas is too low so just because you aren't hearing it not kicking in, doesn't mean that its not just a simple re-gas required.
