I've had the new car ONE DAY, and some inconsiderate twerp (my sister, actually), has tried to squeeze past it in a Devon lane and put a nice long scratch right down the side. Dammit, it was pristine prior to this. She has been despatched to Halfords for the touch-up kit. Read more
I really could do with some advice on buying a car. At the moment I'm doing 80 miles round trip to my fulltime job, mainly driving up and down on M4 and I've got a pizza delivery job as a part-time and I drive around 200 miles per week there too. So I want a car that would be best for both worlds. What would you suggest? I want a car that's very reliable and cheap to run. My spending limit is £1500. Thanks Read more
It's hard to say at 1500 quid because it will be old & high miles, so something big could go wrong with either, although I'd say the astra is probably more sensible as the Pug is more likely to have been driven hard due to the 306's renowned handling.
We always talk about I like this car or that car but I really would like to know "your favourite car manufacturer". We were having discussion at work yesterday about different car manufacturers, how they make good or bad cars, how pricey they're etc..
My favourite manufacturer is Mazda without doubt because they make ***very reliable*** cars, the cars are reasonably priced and quite easy to maintain.
I dislike Renault the most becasue they just want to make good looking cars, I think they never even try to improve the reliability of their cars.
While replying please also state why you like a particular manufacturer or why you dislike one! Read more

My exhaust sheared just before the tail pipe (cat was intact). Garage replaced the pipework, there's now a knocking noise when going at steady speed/coasting. Is this just loose piping or something more serious?

Ok, so the time has come to flog the old workhorse and get something better, bigger and newer.
Looking to buy a 2004 (or thereabouts) Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol or 1.9 Diesel. Due to lack of suitable cars for sale privately, I feel that my fate will lie in the hands of the west midlands 2nd hand motor trade.
I know pretty much what I want, how much I should be spending, how much I can spend how I will finance it etc., but am looking for tips on how best to peel back all the salesman's pink fluffy dice such that I pay no more than a "fair" price.
I have picked up some bits of advice along the way...
1) start off with the idea that you will buy their finance (and warranty)
2) walk away
3) aim to be buying at a "month end"
4) when you have got as far as you think you will get, ask for tax, tyres, fuel, mats etc just before you sign
5) blah de blah
What tricks can one best use to drive the deal down? Do the above actually work?
Tips from any old hands (or better still, an insider) would be great.
Thanks in advance,

Any business that's part of a chain will have monthly and quarterly targets to meet.
Recent interest rate rises have dampened the market a little so you may get lucky

Reminds me of Knightrider... not in a bad way (what impresses teenager in the 80s, looks like a cheap heap today)
Everying about this car suggests it is a sporting drive: low driving position which is a novelty for todays cars, drilled aluminium pedals, knatty gear box (which worries me as it is not clear how 6th is distinguished from reverse). Then there is the injun noise and of course the needless rear spoiler.
Yes it has everything you'd want in a sports car ... except the power..! At least mine only has 1.4 so there is absolutely no torque. 6th feels the same as 2nd. The only acceleration sensation is when you first touch the throttle, especially on fast idle. After that, nothing.

I do use my seatbelt but having to put it on or suffer the
beeping when shuffling cars around at home was tiresome.
That must have been terrible for you. Have you considered therapy to come to terms with it?
Subject.
Airbags, proximity to driver and `duty of care` ( or moral obligation to advise, dealer, passing traffic Police etc.)
The situation,
A small frail looking elderly driver just pulled up at the side of me at lights.
I wouldnt mention those characteristics were they not relevant, regarding age, she looked very frail and diminished physically as though age related osteoporosis had taken its toll.
Relevant? Yes IMHO because she was driving a Punto with her chest inches from the steering wheel, it had to be like that to reach the pedals and her arms were almost bent double she was so close to the steering wheel.
So what if she has a bump and the airbag goes off?
Great driving as she got ahead of me at the lights and moved into my lane and following her through town she could clearly drive well.
It made my heart ache though thinking of that airbag, did she know how far it expanded (etc) and should anyone advise her.
Conclusion,
Should a selling car dealer have advised? or what about a police traffic officer pulling alongside as I did at lights and noticing.
Would you have advised her? Is there any `duty of care` where anyone (or organisation) should do so?

Hi Oilrag.
I have to agree, it's not something that springs to mind, although it was SWMBO who pointed it out to me.
also people don't realise about not waering seatbelts with air bags can be quite nasty too.

I was overtaken whilst doing a speed slightly in excess of 70 by white van (Down hill) with a loaded trailer behind it (I won't admit my speed but he must have been doing over 85 - 90mph).
Comments:
I thought speed limits with trailers were 10mph less than normal light vehicles on motorway?
I thought trailer tyres weren't speed rated much above 90 anyway?
Anyone seen worse than this?
To cap it all - on the back "Hows my driving?"

At the end of the day you might be better off with a "smart repair" that companies such as Chips Away, dentsrus, Halfords, etc can offer.
