My exhaust sheared just before the tail pipe (cat was intact). Garage replaced the pipework, there's now a knocking noise when going at steady speed/coasting. Is this just loose piping or something more serious?

Knock the Cool/warm (not hot) rear silencer with hand or fist (just very short moderate knocks, not major clouts) and see if you hear the noise or shake pipe rapidly but gently with hand.
You may not hear noise when accelerating as masked by engine.
