My mate has a Peugeot 406 Diesel 2 litre HDI..It ran Ok then suddenly wouldn't rev beyond 3000rpm..It then started to run "lumpy " and now refuses to start..A local mechanic has changed a sensor ( either co or co2 not sure which )..cambelt and timing have been checked and are OK..The pressure has been tested in the common rail and its OK..he did manage to get it started with a tow but soon after starting the engine just died.
Any information would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Just wondering if there is something in the air today - same piece of road, same exact spot and same stupidity.

Been overtaken twice on the same blind bend while doing the 30 limit, once by an Impreza with a guy driving it and once by a Smart Forfour driven by a woman - I did wonder if they were a couple as both stuck fingers up as they went by as they cut me up.
The guy in the Impreza only moments earlier did get the squeeze put on him by a lorry which had right of way and didnt slow down when he took a chance - must have been inches to spare - maybe he was annoyed.

Maybe the election is making people tense lol Read more

Going to work the other morning. Route takes me up a good B road with a reasonable gradient (so drivers normally travel at NSL in opposite direction.) Appalled to see a suicide jockey emerging from behind the artic he was sitting behind towards what, to him, is a bad bend.

He's now committed to the overtake but travelling towards me at a rate of knots, completely on my side of the road. Now idiot-boy hasn't held back to see if there's anything in front of the artic he was about to overtake, so he now finds himself on my side of the road with three more cars to get around!! Definite brown trouser moment for him (and a little hairy for me, too!) Thankfully the three other drivers and me aren't quite ready to meet our makers and slow down, each giving him flashes, blasts of our horns and, I'm quite sure, no need to try too hard to lip read about his nocturnal activities on his own...

I think he got the message

Hi

I'm looking at getting a towbar with single electrics fitted to my '97 Nissan Primera hatcback for carrying up to 2 mountain bikes. Have done a forum search on here to get some idea of what I should be looking for.

The question is, I don't mind calling around, but can anyone on here recommend a company as near to Brighton, East Sussex as possible.

I'm not going to use the word 'cheap', but I am looking for a 'low-cost' supply and install :-)

Thanks in advance,

Chris. Read more

Can any of you any back roomers who smoke please tell me why most smokers think that it is ok to toss your butt ends out of your car windows. As far as I am aware all cars still come with ashtrays. Do smokers go home at night have a cig open your window and toss them out into the street. I only ask as on the way home tonight I counted 15 cars that tossed their butt ends out of their windows. It really annoys me as does people who toss rubbish out of their cars. Its disgusting!!!!!!!!!

Is there a valid reason why smokers do this?

I am pipe smoker.

I find that rapping my pipe against the rollbar is a particularly effective method of thwarting those infernal night-time tailgaters; at reasonable velocities, I suspect it must resemble something from an early James Bond filum.

::Liverpool FC's heroic goalkeeper Pepe Reina was burgled on Tuesday night as he was helping send the club through to the Champions League final.
The 24-year-old Spaniard saved two out of three spot kicks in a penalty shoot-out against Chelsea at Anfield.

::But he returned from celebrating the win in the early hours of Wednesday to find his home in Woolton, Liverpool, had been ransacked.

::A number of high value items and the player's Porsche Cayenne were taken.

::The grey-coloured car - which has Spanish number plates - was found burnt out in Fleetwood Walk at 0630 BST.

You'd have thought for the price of one of these it would come with decent security features.

Perhaps they will fall out of favour with footballers, seems Kanu's got his on ebay cgi.ebay.co.uk/PORSCHE-CAYENNE-TIPTRONIC-TOP-PREMIRESHIP-FOOTBALLER_

Jamie Redknapp also dumped the poserwagon www.autotrader.co.uk/EDITORIAL/CARS/news/33659.html

Mateja Kezman sold his too.

After knocking down a cyclist in one and also subsequently running half-a-dozen redlights in it while fleeing the police, drunk, one would hope Fabrice Fernandes gave up his. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/3719094.stm

Oldgit is correct about the keys

don't leave them near the front door (where oik can put fishing rod or bamboo cane through letter box), don't leave them in a flimsy Golf Club, Swimming Pool, Squash Club etc locker....because someone will force the door and have them away (no real sensible options to combat the latter, but if you trust the staff, leave them with the receptionist/manager.....if they want your custom, they'll sort something out)

most modern cars are tricky to steal nowadays by conventional means........so the thief has to have the keys or lift the vehicle completely

if you go on holiday without the car or leave one behind........hide the keys, so if you're burgled at least the car stays behind........put the car in the garage at night, so no one can see it (if the garage is full of carp, get rid...what's more important all the carp in the garage or many thousands of pounds of car)

it is still amazing how many people leave their keys in the car when filling up with petrol/collecting the morning newspaper/defrosting the car on the drive/ filling the bottle bank... THIEVES STEAL THINGS and can be opportunistic

I've read various anecdotes concerning xenon lights and difficulties in switching them to dip right for continental driving. (A Seat Alhambra that required the front bumper to be removed was one - a dealer job at £150 each way.) Since I go to France once or twice a year, and have always managed with stick-on deflectors on my halogen lights (not an option with xenons, of course) this makes me rather wary of specifying xenon lights on a new car - £300 on the cost of my holiday and illegal lights on the journey from dealer to ferry port and back. Does anyone here have first-hand experience, good or bad, of taking a car with xenon lights abroad? Read more

Why would you need £1000 worth of replacements?

Bulbs can be had from specialist suppliers from £50 and the lamp units are available singly. It's also unlikely you'd need 2- unless you annoy someone with a big stick.

Any comments on the life of the front tyres on a 1.25 Ford Fiesta ? The first set (from new) have lasted about 14k miles. I know a lot depends on driving style and correct pressures but just wondered if 14k is a reasonable average ?

Does the above engine (Fiat) have a belt or is it a chain cam?

If it is belt driven, what is the change interval and how much would I expect to pay a Saab agent for the work? Read more

I think alfa say 5 years or 72K

Yes both the 4 pot & the 5 pot are 72K or 5 years.
It's very rare for the belts to break but their have been cases of seized tensioners, which can trash the belt.

Howdy people,

Had to recharge my battery yesterday as it had gone flat. When I put it back into the car, it started fine and sounded fine. But I noticed that after I start the car, the igition warning light (looks like the battery!) turns off as it should... and then after about 30 seconds it comes back on again! Does anyone know what this means as the handbook just tells me to go to my dealer.

Could it be that the battery is faulty, as it was flat for a long long while whilst I was abroad.

Any help or comments appreciated, thanks to all! Read more

Robin the Technician

Sounds like the brushes inside the alternator are on their last legs. I would suspect the alternator has not been charging as needed - hence your flat battery. You will probably end up fitting a replacement unit.
