Hello again,

Some weeks ago you all suggested the best petrol engine to get in a Focus. I have not definitely decided yet, been rather too busy to look at cars etc.....

Anyway I recently hired a Modus and was quite impressed but it was the diesel model. I would prefer to have petrol. They do a 1.4 and 1.6, does anyone know which is the best engine to get?

Thanks Read more

The 1.5 diesel engine is a joint design by the two companies. It seems to be fairly reliable so far although as with any modern CR diesel, if something does go wrong then it will be costly.

Long story short...

...a stone has broken my sunroof!

My insurer's glass people don't repair them and none of the other companies I have called repair them either.

My insurer told me to take it to the dealer and claim the money back, but Nissan want getting on for £800 to replace it and this is more than the car is worth so my insurer won't authorise it.

Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative. How easy is to remove one from a scrapyard and replace mine?

Thanks in advance

if you are fully comp and the cost is more than the cars worth then the car is a write off
however as they will pay out probably £500 its probably wiser to either tape up the hole with newspaper or fit a glass
sorry dont know how complicated this may be but this is what i would do in this situation
find a scrapyard where you can get lost
find the appropiate model
find how the roof comes out by any means necessary
remove said roof glass
use all knowledge to fit to yours (remembering to take as many clips screws and bolts as you took off in scrappy as they always come in handy
consider taking digi photos if it looks a dodgy bit
i seem to remember 95 primevels were built in japan and england check this and where yours was built (bulkhead) before buying wrong roof

Afternoon All,

We are interested in purchasing a VW Golf GT TDi PD 130 2002 Model.

We have looked at the car and it look nice and clean. Gleaming polished exterior. Interior has some wear to drivers seat but the rest is like new.

The guy selling it has told us he has ran the car on gas oil.
My question is what is gas oil?
Is it just another name for diesel as we have always run petrol cars so dont know technical names for diesel.

Glad to hear you're not risking it. As soon as "red diesel" confirmed the apparent saving never worth the risk. Personally I'd alert HMRC of the seller but that's me. Owner has "saved" money which is tax they should have paid.

The conspiracy theorists have been going nuts since this came in. It's apparently a scam
by Ken to justify extending the Congestion Charge zone eastwards.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Over last 5 years every single way out of town has been redesigned to lower speed, A13 east from 50 to 30, A12 north from 50 to 40, bus lanes added and so on, the traffic is probably the same, but it sure moves slower. Greenwich council really wants to make some cash and introduce tolls in Blackwall Tunnel, Ken himself wants the area empty and CC ready for The Games, so yeah - the interest is definitely there...

I have emailed a couple of leasing co.s for pricing for the mondeo estate. I have asked to add on a few options (well, about £2300 pounds worth of extras!). I have had one quote back and it is nearly £3k over the 2 years than the standard version. Adds about £110 + VAt per month.

Is this normal? It would seem the options arent very cost effective! I suppose the comment that the extras dont add anything to the value of car, but make it easier to sell comes to mind.

If you are interested, the options i had are:

bluetooth phone link
parking sensors
the adaptive suspension (as recommended by HJ)
Metallic paint
heated seats
blinds
sunroof.

i would have thought the first four were beneficial and the last three are because i want them - always said if i bought a car it would have heated seats and i want a sunroof again. Great on a summers evening. Blinds being the least important.

i might have to revise my options list.

Metallic generally does reduce the lease cost.

Yes Mad Maxy. If you drive with absolutely steady throttle opening - not too wide but certainly quite wide - you will get the best economy. That means allowing the speed to increase downhill and decrease gradually uphill. CC opens the throttle uphill to maintain speed after dragging its feet on the downgrade, like a truly carp driver (God they get up my nose on A roads those).

I have a 1981 Porsche 924 off road at present with a Toad immobiliser fitted. One key fob pendant stopped working some time ago. Having done some work on it with the battery off I couldn't start it, no fuel pump running. Having checked fuses and connections around the relays fuel pump kicked in, engine fired up. On trying to restart red l.e.d. on toad keeps flashing, no fuel pump and no cranking. Are these things easy to reset,I obviously can't drive to the Lucas centre that fitted it, or alternatively are they easy to remove? Read more

Thanks for your advice. The fault turned out to be the fuel pump solenoid, now sorted.

Absolutely, keep the car. Cars like yours are worth next to nothing to a buyer but 'worth' more in real terms to the current owner (if that makes any sense).

Having recently sold a car I didn't want to sell (needed something bigger) I was left feeling like I sold it for too little and paid too much for the replacement (I doubt I'm alone in this feeling?). Better the devil you know is right, why get rid of something which is treating you pretty well?

So was I- at about 1100, around the A38 /S West Birmingham junction.
The gantry signs were advising reduced speed, at one point down to 40, due to an accident between J6/7.
I slowed- not, I admit to 40, but to about 60- and for more than 5 minutes was overtaken by dozens of vehicles (including a car delivery pickup pulling a trailer in lane3)-all travelling at well above my speed.
I would like to know what they kewn that I didnt Read more

Vin {P}

How often do the signs relate to real issues? In my experience, about 5-10% of the time. If they were accurate most of the time, people would believe them and act accordingly. As it is, they are laughably inaccurate, so worthy of being ignored other than as a general "keep a weather eye out" warning.
