Could someone tell me what a tidal flow is?I keep on seeing signs saying "Blackwall Tunnel No tidal flow- expect delays" Cheers, Mikey.

they swap a lane of traffic, like tides. Its always busier one way in the morning( north i think), so they switch the lane to go that way. Then switch it back at night when it is busier going the other way.
i believe they have stopped this as it was getting a bit dangerous.

I thought it was when the tunnel had sprung a leak and the Thames was getting in! ;-)

To be honest the tidal flow system was causing more problems than it was worth. To put it in place for couple of hours they had to close entire southbound tunnel to empty it, switch flow signs on and redirect one lane onto A12. They then had to reduce A13 and A12 southbound joining lanes into single lane traffic and stop traffic northbound to safely open redirected lane with pilot vehicle leading way at 10mph. By then you had massive queues both northbound and southbound, A13 westbound completely clogged by southbound queue and all the mess would take absolute ages to recover.

There's one in Lincoln. It never occurred to me to wonder how they changed it round. I expect AR-CoolC knows. Come in AR-CoolC.

many thanks for your replies. They can't win at the Blackwall tunnel can they? Oh well it's still a useful way of getting accross the Thames. Cheers Mike.

The conspiracy theorists have been going nuts since this came in. It's apparently a scam by Ken to justify extending the Congestion Charge zone eastwards.
That said, Ken is after all a politician, and we all know they have the integrity of plasticine, particularly when pound notes are involved. ;-)
Cheers

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Over last 5 years every single way out of town has been redesigned to lower speed, A13 east from 50 to 30, A12 north from 50 to 40, bus lanes added and so on, the traffic is probably the same, but it sure moves slower. Greenwich council really wants to make some cash and introduce tolls in Blackwall Tunnel, Ken himself wants the area empty and CC ready for The Games, so yeah - the interest is definitely there...
