May 2007
Just wondering ifI have been unlucky. Flying out to Spain for family holiday at end of May. Booked a Berlingo through a small company a couple of months ago- was cheapest by some way. Recently realised had not heard back- so emailed a few days back to check all was ok. Got very short reply- no cars available apologies for any inconvenience.
In this case I have been lucky in that have now found the same car through a big local chain for less money, but wondered how many people arrive at their destinations to find themselves carless.
Am not naming the company as I dont know if this is standard for them, or if I have been the unlucky exception to the rule.

i'm having trouble with leaks comming from the cylinder head, the coolant and the oil have mixed a little bit has gone to the bore's and i was only getting 1bar compression, i thaught this could be the head gasket, so i changed it and just incase i checked the cylinder head with a piece of metal and a feeler blade to chek for any signs of warping but the wasn't, so back on goes everything with a new head gasket, took her for a drive before the m.o.t, she drove like new! parked her in the garage, went home, nearly ripped my hair off thinking about the m.o.t, went down there later and she passed!, so i drove her home and i noticed the tell tale signs of the cylinder head gasket again, maybe its a faulty new gasket or the bolts??? does anyone have any ideas????
thanx Read more
sorry i do mean 1.0mm, the problem with the sequance in tightening the bolts is that in the manual the drawing shows the head with the fuel pump on the top left when its actualy on the right... should i try reversing the sequence????
I am anxious to replace the spacesaver spare with a full size wheel(yes it will fit).I wish to obtain a 17inch steel wheel to fit the new avensis.
Toyota only do the 17inch in alloy and the price is ridiculous. Any ideas. Read more
Do as DD says standard method in Germany any 17" alloy car comes with a 16" steel spare unless specified and we use 16" steel wheels in winter. But why bother to change anyway.
Does a TDI use the turbo at all at a cruise at say 70 on the motorway?
I guess some are 'always on' but I know my 110bhp has solenoids etc controlling the turbo, which itself has variable vanes.
I have it at the back of my mind that maintaining a 70mph cruise would need no more than about 40bhp.
Would 'reverting' back to N/A save any fuel?
Just out of interest really! Only person I know of with a similar setup is Mad Max! Read more
BTW - You can click on the graphs and click sizes and view them at the larger original size.
I tow a large caravan with this car and want to fit an auxilliary oil cooler to the transmission. The people at Kenlowe have been helpful but we need to know which gearbox is in the car, ZF or Borg Warner, also which hydraulic circuit is the existing oil-to-water cooler in, the high supply side or the low return side. The box is a 5 speed auto with 'tip' function
Any Ideas?
Thanks
Andrew

Hello, just posting here out of curiosity (great site BTW!)
I had a problem recently with my Clio 1.2 Grande (year 2000) just as it reached the 60,000 mile mark. The car had been losing cooling water for a few weeks and needed to be topped up regularly, then the timing belt failed one evening. The AA reckoned the water pump was the source of the leak, the pump had collapsed and as a result taken out the timing belt.
However on inspection at the garage the pump showed no sign of having collapsed and still turned freely. The water pump was replaced and encouragingly there have been no further leaks. The timing belt had certainly never been changed on the car before (my book recommended doing that at 72,000 miles), could it have been a coincidental problem, or could the slightest of problems with the water pump (like it running dry for example) cause the belt to fail?
As mentioned I'm curious to find out after having paid out over £500 on repairs caused by the timing belt breaking :-(

Clios are renown for belts not making the recomended interval. A large proprtion of the problem is caused by water pumps but not always. For this reason I had the belt done on the wifes clio at 5 years and 45k miles. Before I had a chance to mention it, the garge said you will need the pump changed as well. It was.
It has to be said however, any water pump can leak. On any car. Its often nothing more than the seal going,.

Thanks to mjm I am now the proud owner of a radio with CD changer that has left his car to vacate a space for its replacement.
It is still to be fitted but I am very grateful for the gift.
I promise that when I get 5 minuits and the proper lead to go from the stereo to the CD changer I will look at fitting it in SWMBOs car.
Again, thank you very much.

Bit more info
It?s for my wife, mostly to drive to the Station and back, but also local trips. Really need a car as the road there is not well lit, or has a path. She is often coming back late, after midnight etc very tired etc, so scooters, buses, bikes and walking are out
We don?t have kids yet but would like to, in the next year or so
So the car would then be a pure run-a-round for mum and jnr
Of course could get something for the next yr then something else but not sure I can be bothered
We have a Focus Estate, which is great and I have no intention of changing soon
In this evenings paper there is a M reg 106 for £400 and a P plate Corsa for £675 , in the local shop there is an ad for a Y reg Micra for £2k
Also any tips on finding bangers on AT. When I restrict the price I just get loads of lease/monthly costs at £75 a month etc, not cars for £500?
Any advice on places to buy in Harpenden/St Albans?
Cheers
Nick
I must say I love these programs so much i could watch them all day, shows some of the crap that constantly disregard all law and other road uses.
I have noticed though the difference in the 2 forces, Car wars which is Manchester based seems to have the flash Audi's and Suburu's and the thames Valley with the Vectra Sri's, I can see why though, in every episode of road wars there is some damage to the car, usually the offender stops and they feel the need to still drive into them, even last series on the motorway when 1 vectra rammed the car off the road and the police driver in the other unmarked Vectra drove into the back of them with his female collegue shouting STOP!!
Seems if the boys froms Thames Valley looked after thier cars a bit more they might get some nice Audi's to drive around in!
Anyone else notice this??

Problem would be enforcing a costs order I guess.

Out of idle curiousity, which companies can one hire from that will give one a Berlingo - i.e. that you can be assured it will be a Berlingo rather than a Kangoo?
