Right then, i'm in the mood for treating myself and i'm fed up of being practical! So i'm buying a Mini Cooper (Would have been a Cooper S until i got the insurance quote lol!)
Saw one at auction today, had all the kit on Chilli Pack, big wheels, 15k, dark blue with a black and white roof and mirrors, looked quite funky actually! and very clean, bodywork was fine! Provisional at £8700 so about £9000 once all the fee's have been paid. Find out tommorowif its a deal.
Its got the slightly updated interior according to the car-by-car breakdown, 3 spoke leather steering wheel, but is there anything i should check out and look out for? All you guys seem to know ya stuff...
Cheers in advance for ya replies... Read more
We bought a new to us car and drove it home last Thursday. 17.5 miles from the dealership it broke down and a 2 hour journey ended up quite a bit longer. To cut a long story short (about 2 days long) we got the car back and there seems to be quite a few issues with it and we've also noticed that its had some sort of accident as the front passenger door has been repaired/resprayed. We haven't got the service history book from the dealership yet although they have said it will be with us as soon as they've queried something with the previous owners (they have told us it has a FSH). Now we've never ever had a problem with purchasing a car and dealerships have always been OK. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to follow this up. The suggestion so far is to take it to the local dealership and get them to look at the vehicle and make good any problems. Does this sound reasonable? Read more
Its a diesel Freelander! There was a broken wire on the wiring harness(?!) and at first the local LR dealership said that it needed complete replacement. They are now saying that it cannot be repaired again. The majority of the car was paid for by the part-ex. We also had a tow bar fitted so do you know what would happen about the cost of that?
was wondering if any one can help just serviced my vaux Zafira diesel at the weekend.
and cant seem to get the inspection service to disappear from the milometer was wondering if any one out there knows tried holding the button but does not switch it back

The proceedure to switch off INSP message is as follows.
1. Ignition Off
2. Hold Trip Reset In
3. Turn on Ignition
4. Still Holding Trip Reset wait for three (or maybe four) dashes
5. Turn off Ignition
6. Turn on Ignition
On later models you also have to hold the brake pedal down before turning the ignition on (same point as step 2 above)
Nissan primera 1.6 t reg 99.hello I was wondering if you would know that this is correct for my a/c .When i turn it on my cars revs go to about 1000 rpm for about 25 secs then gos back to 700rpm for about 10 to 15 secs I think this is the compressor cutting in and out?.It did this even before the visit to kwik fit and now.
The air is cold about 6 degrees to 8 degrees as I had it recharged yesterday at kwik fit and it was put on a machine that tested it all ok.
My dad has the same age vehicle and his does exactly the same.just to put my mind at rest as I'm concerned at the compessor being faulty or something else. Many thanks for any help on this matter. Read more
Many thanks for clarifiying this for me cheers Aprilia!!!
good evening, i would be grateful for your opinions on the following. sold my audi a4 tdi on ebay around 5 weeks ago. all was fine buyers said they'd pay in cash, turned up on day said they couldn't get the £2300 out in one go at the bank so have made a paypal payment to me. i wasn't happy about this but accepted it and the car was sold. only thing to note was the drivers door trim on the outside was loose as someone had tried to pull it of the night before i guess in an attempt to steal it, they saw this and accepted it anyway.
5 weeks later they left negative feedback saying the headgasket went 2 weeks after buying it, and today they have filed for a refund wth paypal saying the following faults are present,
failed headgasket due to leaking waterpipe that has been repaired with silicone
2 out of 4 glow plugs didn't work
air mass meter failed
door trim hanging off
front bumper held with silicone
spare tyre missing.
the car has full service history and i never had a days trouble with it, the only fault i was aware of was the door trim. there was defiantely no failed air mass meter as i ran vagcom for fault codes the day before sale to make sure there weren't any problems.
in this situation what would you advise? i feel bad about it but as far as i can see it is bad luck, they looked at the car and test drove it before signing the v5 but now they have made this complaint and paypal have removed the funds from my account pending inquiry.
cheers

Thanks for letting us know the outcome.
A taxi driver could lose his income after council officials refused to renew a licence for his classic car, because it is too old. Bob Coles drives passengers in Bath in his 25-year-old Mercedes LWB.
But the 54-year-old father-of-two was told his private hire licence would not be renewed in October as the vehicle was more than seven years old. A council spokesman said the decision had been taken on grounds of the vehicle's age and high mileage.
Despite having clocked 134,000 miles the car was deemed in excellent condition by Bath and North East Somerset Council's licensing officer last year.

Important:
In BATH, the place in question here, a HORSE AND OPEN CARRIAGE is used as a taxi around the city centre during the tourist season. It even has a hackney carriage plate on the back.
The carriage, of course, might not be old - it could be a replica, and the horse might be quite young too, but surely this is unfair. A Chrysley 300C is used as a taxi in Bath too, as an aside.
Hey Guys and Girls,
Bit of a puzzler! I was braking hard up to some traffic lights on a 60Mph road when my engine died with a short grinding sound. The engine did not restart and i thought it sounded like a cambelt break. But when i took of the oil filler cap, i could see the inlet camshaft rotating. Is it possible that the exhaust camshaft has stopped rotating even though the inlet is still going? I'm pretty sure the grinding sound means bent valves right?
If i could have your thoughts and comments, they would be much appreciated!!
Cheers

Screwloose -
Hey. Yeah the engine whines the same as if there are no spark plugs present. Like very little resistance so the Starter motor runs a little quicker. I'll get back to you in the week concerning the comp. test.
Thanks

As well as what's already been said, re: alternator, don't rule out the battery.
ps, I've amended the Shouting! DD.
Hi all,
It is insurance renewal in July and lookign to get the cheapest quote possible. Here is my scenario
3 points obtained in October 2002
By my reckoning the points are eligle to come off in 4 years time - October 2006
But
You have to declare them on insurance for 5 years - October 2007
So I if renew insurance in July and declare no points, that means I would be lying for 3 months.
I know its wrong
Question is - Would any of you do it and would I be Ok with it if I didnt have a bump? Read more
Insurance Companies have access to DVLA database.
have just dug the Blackbird out of the shed to prepare it for a French trip in early June (8 of us from work for 3 days).... found that a creature has made itself a nest in the shed, amongst the tank bag and back pack, which had fallen off a shelf onto the front mudguard and then floor, causing minor scraches, that should polish out......not sure what the creature is, but whatever it was is it eats snails apparently and carps too much and too big to be a mouse.......am guessing rat...(came up through the hole in the floor that the ground anchor sits in concrete that prevents thieving North Londonites from having the bike)... and easily disposed of the stuffed newspaper filling i'd naively tried to prevent this.
so had to clean carp off the bike gear and the floor of the shed, not a good start........then as i'm bent right over spotted world's most enormous spider (maybe slight exaggeration) and being severely arachnophobic had mini heart attack.
Then had to move two big boxes of SWMBO school books back into the house, where 6 months ago we'd had a row, cos there is nowhere to put them.......despite the fact that my garage is now 2/3rds of its starting size as i built an office for her to house all the school type stuff... which is why the bike is in the garden shed, no doubt invalidating the insurance, hence the ground anchor, 2metal chains, disc lock, security light and alarm wired direclty into house via underground cable.
then it's the bike........started quite well.........had started it 2 weeks ago for 1st time in 4 months, having disconnected the battery rather than use an optimiser, which ruined the battery last year.
Wheeled it from back garden to front drive, intending to clean and polish it.......doesn't really need it as dust cover has done the job, but i like it to look 'proper'.........and then it started raining
....marvellous, now have to ride it to local bike shop in the rain for the new front tyre to be fitted, which should be interesting on the way back...(daren't leave the one on there, which is well legal, cos last time i did that i came back with a Dunlop Kojak, praying it wouldn't rain on the journey)
then there was the kit check.......took over half an hour to find the insurance as it was filed elsewhere than somewhere i would have filed it, rang them only to find i didn't need to, was already automatically covered.....AA cost 24 quid for 3 days, which seemed a bit steep, but maybe i'm not keeping up with the times.
which just left the leathers...and therein lay the big problem.........increasing girth versus bike leathers bought over 3 years ago......my opinion is they'll do.....when SWMBO stopped laughing, she reluctantly agreed they'd do......but i suspect the prosepct of me splashing out 200 readies for a new set is part of her thought process
stressed is not the word........hope i calm down enough to enjoy the trip

Nothing like French A roads Wp... What you call motoring. No need to hurry at all. You still make good time. Aaaah!
Could we please have a purge of po-faced er, what's the word, just as well I forget, in this country, the elements who try to hamper traffic flow everywhere?
Is it illegal to call for their, you know, violent death at a steady pace until the others see the point?

i wouldn't like it..but some other people would. That's why i mentioned it...as this is the discussion side of the Back Room :-)
