HJ says, in his CBC breakdown "Plastic fuel filler pipe between cap and tank can develop hairline cracks leading
to petrol fumes entering the cabin when the tank pressurises". Are there any other causes of (strong) petrol
smells in these cars (2.0 ecotec hatchback)? Is there a DIY remedy? Read more

It's certainly inside the car - but it doesn't always absolutely
stink, just sometimes (there's normally a discernable smell, though). I have
removed the 5l petrol container from the "boot", and it wasn't
that.

I can't smell any strong petrol smell from under the bonnet after an 8-mile run. The inside of the car does smell, though.

while.
I will have a look at them. I assume there are
four!

Neither can I see any dark pipes behind the engine. All the pipey bits merely look dusty. There's some oil on a springy boxy thing behind the top of the engine, which I assume is to do with the throttle linkage.

The boot does whiff quite strongly of petrol.
Question Shock Absorbers
Chris M

A simple question, but I'm not sure of the simple answer - if there is one. How do you know when it is time for new shock absorbers?

Obviously if they are leaking, there's abnormal tyre wear or they are completely knackered it's easy to tell. But is there a tool or machine for accessing their performance or is the only way the subjective deterioration in handling? Read more

I had a colleague who took his motor to one of those deleted places - {the slang you used could have identified who you were referring to - DD} . They said his shockers were worn, and offerd to replace them. When they presented him with the bill, he produced the receipt from less than a year previous for new shockers! They argued that they didn't say they were worn out, just worn. He didn't pay.
One of my current motors, an ancient Kia Pride, has the softest springs and lightest damping I've ever had. It wallows, but the damping is effective. It's the best car I've ever experienced over speed bumps, but I've never tried a Citroen hydro whatsit.

I've recently bought a Toyota Celica with full service history from a main dealer with 55k miles. This is my first Celica but i am finding that the gearbox is a bit rough (notchy/grating a wee bit) especally when cold but I'm not sure if it's not just the way I'm driving it because matching the revs to the ratio takes a bit of getting used to. Do you think a gear oil change would make any difference here or is this an inherent fault with Celica's. By the way the car is great, I love it (except for the gearbox!). Read more

These are not the smoothest 'boxes at the best of times. Don't use a 75W-90 - its too thick. Go to Castrol SMX-S (75W-85) or Redline MTL, or even Amsoil "synchromesh" MTF (if you live in a cold area - do lots of winter morning driving). You will be surprised what a difference it makes.

Hi,

I have a mk5 VW Golf and the temperature is no where near as cold as it used to be when the air con is on. temperature reading from the centre vent has been measured at 16C. It is trying (ambient is about 25C today) but getting no where near as low as it used to be.

Can anyone recommend a decent aircon leak specialist/regasser in the Manchester area (preferably mobile) for my car please? I am hoping it just requires re-gassing as it's out of warranty. I would prefer an independant rather than vw dealer due to general high pricing with the dealer.

Thank you.

I have used Polar Car Air Conditioning based in Prestwich, North Manchester .
They also have mobile vans covering the North West.

Very good service in my opinion but it is the only place I have ever used for Air con.

Millions of motorists will be able to arrange their motor insurance quicker and more conveniently thanks to a proposed change in the law announced today said the Association of British Insurers.

The Department for Transport (Dft) today announced plans to enable motor insurance certificates to be issued electronically. Currently the law requires these certificates to be sent by insurers to policyholders by post. Motor insurance certificates are legal evidence of insurance, and are needed when arranging road tax, MOT and by the police.

Justin Jacobs, the ABI?s head of motor insurance, said: "This is good news for customers and insurers. Over half of UK households are now online, and this will enable them to arrange motor insurance more speedily. This will be especially helpful when buying and taxing a vehicle quickly .It will also help insurers provide a faster, more cost-effective service to their customers".

So when If I am stopped by the ANPR lads I can produce any old printout on any old paper with a logo at the top and they will accept that the database is wrong and I am legal.
They have no means of checking unless they call the Insurance co and pass their security checks.
"Sorry to have stopped you sir! you are OK".
Have I missed something?

Going to look at a Grand Scenic 1.9 dCi tomorrow (private sale), and just wondering how the Renault warranty works in its third year.

The car we're looking at is a 54 plate (October reg) with 35k on the clock and a full Renault service history. Therefore, I assume it is still under manufacturer's warranty until October. However, I have read that the third year is a dealer warranty, and only the first two years are provided by the manufacturer.

This is a UK sourced car, so the third year will apply, but does this mean its with the selling dealer only (which, as the car is nearly 100 miles away is likely to be hugely inconvenient) or will it be honoured by any Renault dealer? Does anyone know how it works?

Incidentally, this is a 2004/54 1.9dCi Dynamique Grand (7 seat) in the Ottoman Blue (our fave) with the twin panoramic electric sunroof and CD changer (both options), 35k and FRSH, is said to be "immaculate" and is up for £8995 "with a bit of room for movement". Sound like a good deal?

Cheers

Based on heresay and anecdotal evidnece your biggest source of agro on the renault DCi engine is the EGR valve - not it seeems purely a renault issue. If you can keep this working well it seems your engine will have pretty good longevity.

So I would

1/ use it hard regularly italian tuning it
2/ use good quality diesel with additves

and probably consider the egr as a consumable item (like a cam belt) and change it at 50k miles.

Ignore the renault servicing schedule if it says 18k miles for an oil change - . 12 k max.

Earlier in the year I mentioned a young girl speeding down a hill in the icy weather and being unable to negotiate the bend. In Scotland most drivers understand the problems of icy conditions. She hit a car killing the front seat passenger - fortunately the 3 children of the driver were not in the car she hit or the carnage could have been even worse. Her defence was that there was an intermittant fault on the clutch, which was backed up by some of her family. The Procurator Fiscal has now decided not to continue with any charges.
Surely the car should not have been on the road? If it had not, no one would have died. How exactly would a clutch not working have led to her speeding down the hill? Would this have been dropped in England?
I am bemused that some one driving a car with a known fault, killing someone, is not prosecuted with, at least, driving a car unfit to be on the road. Read more

Exactly. You can be speeding at any speed in which you cant stop the vehicle in the distance you can see etc.

But speed limits and scameras take no account of weather conditions, visibility etc etc.

An accident at 10 mph in ice is driver error through driving at an inappropriate speed.

Don't know the facts of the case but sounds like poor judgement by the legal sysytem imo.

Hello

I have a 998 cc Nissan Micra, year 2000 (W reg). It is converted to LPG so it is bi-fuel. In the last couple of weeks it has started stalling, particularly when starting up and slowing down and we don't know what the problem is. We had the distributor replaced as we initially thought it was the ignition coil. However, while this has made it run better, it has not solved the problem. We have also checked the lambda sensor, throttle pot, mass meter, idle control valve which all seem to be okay. The only thing we haven't checked is the coolant temperature sensor but the gauge in the car seems okay.

Has anybody got any other suggestions before I take it to the Nissan Dealer?

Thanks
