Tried to change a Megane cc indicator bulb today for a neighbour. Never managed it. Took the front wheel off and the inner plastic wheel arch but even folowing the instructions in the Renault handbook we still could not get the bulb out. Why why why do they make these jobs so difficult for the diyer. He is off to Renault to part with some hardearned just for a bulb change. Stupid i think!. Read more

I've got a very strange starting problem with my Mrs' P plate Polo. Couple of months ago the starter motor started playing up so I got another one from scrapyard from a VW Golf fitted it and the car started without any problem. Then few days ago the battery went totally flat and had to jump start the car. So I went and bought a new battery and then everything was back to normal. Now yesterday the same thing happend. Car started twice without any problem but when I was going to start it the third time it didn't start up and jump starting worked without any problem. Now I'm really confused whether its the alternator or is it the starter motor that's causing all this problem. Please advise. Read more
Read today about 'Ashes to Ashes', the Life on Mars spin off to be shown next year. Apparently to be set in 1981, it will feature Gene Hunt driving around in an Audi Quattro, rather than a Cortina!
But am I right in thinking that '81 is about 2 years too soon for the Quattro anyway, and even if it is not, the only Quattro that would have been around then was the UR Quattro which cost about £55-£60k in today's money; not a likely car purchase for a detective, surely?
So everyone, what car sould Gene Hunt be driving in 1981??? Read more

Hello,
I have noticed my carb is leaking when the acellerator is pressed on my 1988 Fiat Ducato van. The Leak seems to be coming from under the accelerator housing. Is this common on these vehicles?
Should there e a nylon washer or something similar to protect from leaks?
At 125,000 miles could it be the carb is badly worn and how can I check it please?
Thanks
Mike. Read more
I have a problem with my brand new Zafira 1.8vvt "energy". When starting up it takes about 4-5 seconds to put out the oil light when the car has been left for a while. Restarting the car is fine after a short while. Its seems to me as if the oil is running back to the sump and when starting has to fill the oil filter before the pressure is reached. I will be contacting the dealer tomorrow to get it checked, but I was wondering if this is some thing common to the 1.8vvt, I can't see how it can be. Should there be a check valve on the oil filter to stop this happening? The oil filter is mounted high on thr front of the engine block.

New value for money intiative, covered in today's Sunday Times. Basically, if your car is stolen and then found by the police, either they will tell you where it is and you can collect it, end of story, or they will charge you £105 to do forensic tests on it in an effort to to determine who stole it. You will be fascinated to learn that this process in known as "Forensicating"! A third alternative is that your car will be moved to a place of safety and you will be charged for the removal and subsequent storage and than another £105 if you want it foresicated. Not all of these charges may be paid out by your insurance company. I empasis that this is a Home Office initiative not a police one.

Charges for public services is always a tricky issue.
The method of collection using a contractor no doubt offers the best value for money to the tax payer - as pointed out above, why waste a trained police officer's time with it.
But the real issue is, is it fairer for everyone to pay a bit more and have this service free at point of need, or just pass the cost onto the specific users?
Seeing as the users don't choose this service (ie they don't choose to have their car stolen) voluntarily, then it does seem a bit harsh.
I'm sure the police would love to offer the SOCO service free to everyone, but as we all know, expectations of public services never quite tie up with our eagerness to pay.
In fact, in some ways making a specific charge for public services would help in certain cases IMO, as consumers of them would realise just how expensive services can be to deliver, and could make specific choices themselves.
I.e. do I want to have a well maintained park near me? Cost say £25 a year. Do I want to have a street light outside my house? Cost £5 a year. Do I want to be able to call on trading standards in the coming year? If not, then you save £8 from your annual council tax bill. No Social Services? Then save £800. And so on.
The problem comes, as any economist will know, is that public services are often "public goods" i.e. they can be enjoyed for free by someone else who didn't pay (i.e. your neighbour doesn't pay for a streetlight, but goes and parks his car under the light you paid for!!)
Therefore, some services have to be funded out of general tax and be provided for free to everyone. Other services are charged for at point of use where a specific user can be indentified.
So, after the economic-ification of this topic, this service does actually lend itself to having a specific charge made for it.
With the bonus of you being able to opt out if so desired.

I have a 306 hdi 2001 with aircon which i have recently had parts replaced i.e. condensor and pipework. It is due to be regassed when the last clip is replaced (awaiting delivery) and hopefully will then work.
As the weather is getting warmer im getting worried about not having cooling fans working. I understand that there are 2 speeds slow for air con and cooler engine temp and fast for higher temp and high air con pressure.
Since i bought the car last oct i have never been able to get the fans to kick in. Looking at this yesterday i couldnt locate the briton sensor (aparantly brown connector) near to the thermostat housing to bridge the connection and hopefully kick the fans in. Therefore i am unsure if i have a problem with the fans or sensors.
As explained the aircon should soon be up and running so i need fans obviously for engine cooling but for this aswell.
The one thing i did notice was that the was a relay from the engine fuse box (bottom left corner) missing that has continuity from the there to each of the 3 relays on the fan housing. I am not sure if this should be there or purposly missing.
Any help on the matter would be appreciated as i want to sort this
Thanks Read more
The only sensors i have found are on the expansion tank which i asume is for the coolant level and a blue plug near the thermostat housing which i think is for the temp. However, when i unplugged this with the engine running no fans kicked in
I have checked the fuses and wiring as best i can which seem ok
The only other thing i havent tried is the multiplug at the bottom corner of the fans, this is due to it being really stuck on so im wondering if there could be corrosion here?
thanks

I've had 3 headlight bulbs go on the offside of the Megane hatch in 3 years (does anyone think this is particularly unusual?). I failed to change it on all 3 occasions & ended up going to the local garage (each time they asked to pop the bonnet until I pointed out it was only "accesible" through the wheel arch). First couple of times they asked for a fiver for the 10-15 minutes of swearing they (& I) endured. Third time they had it up over the inspection pit with the wheel off and charged £20.
The offside indicator went over Easter. I thought I'd give it a good effort myself - work clothes on, trolley jack & axle stands out. Took about 40 minutes of sweating & swearing just to get the wheel off (has anyone else suffered stuck wheels before?). I tried accessing the bulb & then realised that I needed an orange one, not the clear one Halfords had sold me.
So I put everything back to go & get the correct bulb & it turned out it just needed a wiggle to get it working again! What a PITA.
I had already mentally noted to check the procedure on any potential new car, but it does seem to be becoming the norm to make it hard for owners to do their own simple maintenance.
