Had the Fiesta up on ramps recently looking at the driveshaft boots/steering rack. Front wheels were off and mechanic was demonstrating possible leaking steering rack seals. He put it on lock to lock and squeezed the gaiters so I could hear the fluid in the rack (hope I'm making sense so far) . Thinking we needed a new rack, wheels back on and when we switched the car on, the engine management light came on.
Much messing about with an electronic thingy and he eventually got it to go out. Nearly a week later, it came on again this morning. (Wife driving car). Stayed on for a short journey. When she switched the car on for the second time, it didn't reappear and hasn't for the rest of the day. What could possibly be causing this. It's never done it before and for the life of me, I can't think what's responsible. Read more
2002 52 reg Hyundai Accent 1.5 CDX in Hip Hop Red. 70,000 miles. FSH.
My uncle just bought this thing for £2,000 cash. Seems a lot of car for the money but would welcome opinions and any tips on things to look for work to be done ASAP etc.

I drive a 1.5L Hyundai Accent X-reg [~70k] for last 6 months.
The car has not given any trouble so far, fun to drive, nippy in town, good at motorway, parts are not expensive either.
I have driven this car continously over 4 hours at a stretch without any leg or back pain.
I can see the bonnet from driver's seat, an option IMO very few modern car offers - it makes parking a joy.
Hyundai only gives 5 years warranty as standard since 2002.
A certain well-known national seller of car accessories has a sign outside advertising its scratch repair service. THey claim it can be as much as 10 times cheaper than a conventional shop. But said national chain is generally known for employing disinterested teenagers, so I'm not sure I trust them with my newly purchased 53 reg Volvo S80 2.5T SE, which I paid £7k for with 50,000 miles on the clock, and suffering scratches to the front, a keyline scratch on the passenger side, and a bit of scratching above the number plate at the back.
Anyone used their services? Read more
flunky, not sure how they are actually doing this but I think its safe to say it won't be their own employees, they are probably just working as agents for a company like chipsaway etc.
{Slight edit to remove company name due to Flunky's earlier comments about their staff - DD}
My sister has a 106 1.1 y reg and i recently took the front road wheels off to check the brakes and had difficulty in taking the wheel nuts out. When they finally came i wasnt pleased to see metal fillings comming out with the nuts. The nuts have completely lost their thread and im sure the hub threads are shot too.
If i were to find a 106 on a scrap yard to pinch their hubs how difficult would it be to take off?
Would they need bearings replaced on refitting or is it as straight forward as taking the big nut off and pulling the hub off?

Very informative photo ;O)
Ok pal? ;o) :o) ;O)
I'm being very pedantic here, before anyone says it - but my car was paid for by a sum of money I can't see myself coming to again any time soon, so it has to last.
I changed the coolant, didn't get all of it out and my Dad flushed it through with a watering can (I wasn't going to do this myself as I'd bought de-ionised water to use but what's done is done)
So, my cooling system now has a mix of pure water, garden tap water, and an unknown amount of coolant.
I put in approx 3.5 litres of 50:50 mix so the coolant ratio's not going to be too low.
I'm just wondering whether to try again...like I said, pedantic, but can't afford not to be!
Still not convinced by 'for life' either. There was a noticable difference in the stuff that came out and went it! Read more
To flush and refill my Astra mk4, I just undid the drain tap on the radiator and took the expansion bottle cap off (older cars needed the bottom hose taking off as they didn't have drain taps). Once the coolant had stopped running out of the drain I refilled the system with the drain open, running the engine on idle for 5 minutes, constantly topping up the expansion tank.
Having closed the drain, I just added half the system volume, by calculation, with red long-life (5 years, not for life) coolant, and then topped up with plain water.
The use of distilled water is over-rated - even in a very hard water area the amount of calcium in 6 litres isn't a lot - it's not like domestic hot water systems where fresh water keeps being added and heated.
Don't belive i've just done it but! I've bought a tax exemp SWB S111 Landy. I'm assisting a good mate restoring a early S1 LR but he's strapped for cash to continue so his tidy S111 has to go
It has a galvanised chassis and a almost new bulkhead, this will make it the 4th S111 i 've owned. It also has the later 2.5 petrol (ex army overhauled) from a early 110
I was'nt even looking for one but thought it was too good to pass even mrs mm approves
As a family we know we'll have a lot of fun with it Read more

It wasn't just a Santana thing. All the passenger-carrying versions of the SII/SIII used those variable rate springs - 11 leaves on the LWB ones and the bottom leaf was seriously meaty. They worked fine if kept oiled; could be repaired with an arc welder and could survive a broken top leaf and still keep going. I'd like to see an aftermarket parabolic try that.
Land-Rovers weren't fragile things in those days. With only an inch of suspension travel before it hit those chunky bump stops, you treated rough ground with due respect. Unless you had a good osteopath...... [It was often said that the driver's vertebrae would shatter before the suspension broke.]
hi i bought my car 3 years ago. because of steering problems and scrubing off of the tyres i took it back they said it was my wishbones that were at fault they ficked it but since then i have had to change them atleast 5 times my self any one having the same trouble as me and does any one now why Read more
I'm looking at a Clarion CRN 28 with a dim display - you can barely read it in daylight. I suspect it may be on permanent dim display, because it doesn't get any dimmer when you turn on the lights. I've got a user guide for it, but that doesn't show the wiring connections, presumably there's a feed to the car lights.

Just picked up new motor- upgraded from a 2003 SEAT Ibiza 1.2 to a new Ibiza 1.4 tdi and first impressions are really good. Can't believe how much more solid it feels from the gearchange to the trim quality. And the engine is a thousand times better even with less than 100 miles on the clock, the pick up from 2000 revs is impressive ( it has caught me out once though off boost at 1500 revs- not much happens then all of a sudden woosh).
As for running it in, the hand book says take it steady for 600 miles which I've taken as keep it below 3000 revs, but other people have mentioned drive it normally as if you pamper it things won't bed in as they should. Anyone with any views?

Spot on advice for running in an engine.
Hadn't even read that before and it echo's exactly what a friend told me who works for landrover in engine management.
Hi i have 1996 306 d turbo sport. It has the lucas pump. Basically I adjusted the maximum fuel screw on the diesel pump. Just like i have done on a few other cars to give them that bit more power. After doing all this I put the plastic plug back in. Primed the pump back up using the hand pump. Cranked the engine over several times and nothing. I took the plastic plug back out. Put the screw back to where it was originaly. Put it all back together and still nothing. I called the aa out and they said the immobiliser had gone. I am not to sure on this. Is it possible I have an air lock in the pump somewhere. If so how can i get it out. I did loosen an injector pipe and cranked the engine but nothing comes out. please help me. The immobiliser on this car is the key pad one. Can you give me ideas on how to bleed the pump. And if it is the immobiliser how can i fix that. Cheers lee Read more
alarm can be turned off by putting key in ignition, turn it on then press button next to ignition barrel

Definitely engine management light. It just comes on now and again. Seems odd that it never did it before. It's just the thought of having to fork out in the region of £60ish to Ford to tell me what the fault is.
