Hey guys. I've just been given a Golf TDI which has 92k miles on the clock. I'm thinking that rather than selling it and buying a brand new car, I'll probably keep it for the duration of its life. What do you guys think? Do Golf diesels run on for a while? Will the mileage go into the 100s without any problems? Ok, I know this is an impossible question to answer but do any of you have any experience of Golf diesels? I don't want to make the decision and then find that I'm spending thousands on repairs, etc. Read more

It is now time for a change. We've had our Mazda5 for 18 months now and feel we would now like to get back to a normal / hatchback type car. We do around 7-10K miles a year, made up of the school run and commuting a short distance during the week with longer trips 150-200 miles/day at the weekend (seaside etc). I've narrowed it down to a choice of 2 new cars and a "wildcard" 2nd hand choice:
1. Mazda 6 2.0 petrol Katano - New (£14995 otr)
the Mazda drives well, has loads of kit and the cost to change is £5110.
2. Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D Colour collection - New (£14685 otr)
the toyota is a lot softer than the mazda, but is easy enough to drive. It has less kit than the mazda but promises around 10 mpg better. Cost to change is £5500.
3. Honda Accord 2.0 Sport - Second hand (2005 55 plate), £11995.
Saw this on the way home from the toyota garage. Very nice build quality, quite quick, cheaper than the new cars. Cost to change around £3.5.
Our Mazda5 is a 2005 55 plate 1.8TS in silver with 15K on the clock. The Glass's guide trade price this month is £9675. I've had it advertised for a few weeks now at £9995, but have not had a single call.
I've previously owned a Mondeo and Vectra and would not consider either again. I've also looked at a new Octavia, but wasn't keen on the deal offered. I've also looked at Peugeot, Citroen and Renault but aren't keen on any of them.
I probably prefer a petrol engine, but the toyota D4D is very quiet and is a least as quick as the Mazda 2.0 petrol. The toyota diesel is only £650 more than the 1.8 petrol, but appears to have much stronger residuals.

Hi, I have just made up a grid of your preferred two new cars.<<
I accept that I may be biased towards Jap cars because reliability is my number 1 requirement when buying a car but I have just been looking at the new web site gadget above and selected family cars. The vast majority of cars provided were French - most of which I see reports of reliability problems on this site and others. Indeed my sister in law was left by the side of a dual carriage way recently with her 2 children as a result of their megane scenic breaking down.
Can you really justify such relatively problematic & unreliable cars for use with families. I would have thought the last thing you want is a problematic car when carrying children about.
Shouldn't realiability be the number one priority instead of the family 'lifestyle' type when choosing a car.

Agreed on the Ro80, I mentioned in Unusual Sightings that I spotted two of these parked next to a Community Centre in Knighton Town Centre and thinking about it now how modern they loook against the street scence of melted wellie designs that car makers insist we want at the moment.

Hi, is there anyone watching right now who can give me a clue how to remove the interior front door panel on a 99 Bora? Possibly the front door is the same as the Golf??
I've prised the panel back from the door frame around the edges but just can't figure out how the other fixings can be accessed. I'm assuming I prise off some trim etc to access fixing screws but nothing seems to want to budge. I've done a few door cards in the past but this one has me beat!

You can see why there was just no way that I was even going to try to explain that lot to you....
I must try and get that repair kit he talks about. A whole new inner door assembly is much quicker to fit; but at £180-ish some customers might like a choice - this time.
Do you find your route over congested?

Hope you guys can help. I just brought a BMW 316 1991 4dr Auto, my headlights gon ebut I can't open the bonnet. The nearside of the bonnet seems to come loose but the offside seems to be stuck. Is there anyway I can get in there without taking i to a garage?

Are these the ones that open at the trailing edge?
Try pulling the release while a second person pushes up and down on the bonnet near where the catch is.
Make sure they spead both palms to spread the load so it doesn't dent.
Key pulling over and over while they keep bouncing. Hopefully that will work.
Come resale time would I really lose a lot of cash if the car hasn't been serviced at the main dealer?

...the other thing that occurs to me is that when you take a car to the dealers these days, there's often software updates of minor rectification work necessary (like a recall, but non-safety related). I reckon it's unlikely a specialist would even know about these things, never mind be prepared to do them FOC.
My GOlf GTi (mk 4) has a stated 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds. I had it chipped to 190BHP from 150 and that should have taken about a second off this time (it certainly feels it). I know 0-60 times are usually a little optomistic as allegedly manufacturers crunch gears etc. I'm now looking at new cars (still) such as the Audi A4 convertible, where the base engines (1.8T and 2.4 V6) look considerably slower than my golf (9.4 second 0-60) - can they really be that much slower - I know the car weighs more but surely a V6 engine is going to be fast - I don't want to get something slower.? Also, the BMW Z4 2.5 0-60 time is stated as 7.4 - again in line with my golf - can a sports car that is aerodynamically designed with a 2.5 litre 6 cylinder engine really only be as fast as the golf? Seems odd to me. Although the Z4 will prob go round corners faser. Read more
It's something you will rarely do - IE 0-60 in the quickest possible time - I take them with a pinch of salt - I had an old 306 S16 with 0-60 of (As per mags etc) 8.4. I also had a Rover 200 Vi - 7.5 0-60 stated but there was no way the Rover would out drag the 306.

Could be a loss of feed to the speed sensor. It's really something that needs the codes reading to see if there's any clues stored there.
