Hi
My first post so be gentle!
I have recently agreed to purchase a used BMW from a main dealer. The screen price was £23,384. The dealer valued my old Golf GTi at £4,000. Leaving a balance of £19,384
I phoned back next day and made an offer. My car and £19K. This was accepted and they took a £1,000 deposit over the phone.
Told a mate of mine at the pub that night and he offered to buy my car off me for £4,700.
I called the dealer back the next day and asked if that was ok. He said it made no difference if he had the car or the money, so did the deal with my mate for £4,700 and sold my car..... with me so far....?
I spoke to the dealer on the phone today to confirm the delivery date etc and I mentioned paying the balance of £22K.....
"No sir... the balance is £22,384!"
He says that when we did the deal he had allowed me a better price on the PX and hadn't reduced the price of the car I'm buying.....
I guess legally he has me over a barrel since we didn't specifically agree if the purchase price, or the PX price was to be changed to get the balance of £19K in the original deal. He now has a £1,000 deposit, although I haven't signed anything.....
I can see this from his point of view too... he had perhaps given me a slightly low price for the PX, and he won't make this back now.
I know that as a percentage of the purchase price I'm arguing over buttons..... but £384 is £384.... and better in my pocket than his....
I think he should at least meet me half way......
My question is.... am I being unreasonable.... should I accept this, or fight....
I can't decide Read more

No expert but can you quote the "distance selling regulations" (as
you did the deal over the phone) and use that as
a lever??

yes this is correct so the dealer has an excellant chance of winning his case at court then ,thanks nozmeister i forgot about this newish law.........

Well after just 910 miles from brand new, my beloved 2006 Passat Sport Auto has developed a fault or rather something has broken.

The auto gear lever push button has broken internally resulting in the button itself and part of the inner workings including a spring to pop out onto the center console. This means until I book it in to my local dealer (which thankfully is more or less next door to where i work) I have to use my little finger to push what's left inside in order to put it in drive.

My question is although I'm not *that* concerned should I be annoyed with this failure? OK it's a Company car, the dealers next door so I can leave there no problem whilst I am at work,. Otherwise i'm totally delighted with the car.. it was my choice to have it 'cos I liked them so much.. It replaced another Passat too .

So you can guess I'm not really annoyed so should I be? 910 miles only and something breaking is absurd isn't it?...

When it comes back from the menders I'll love it just the same.. Read more

After just 1000 miles you have to give it the benefit of the doubt, after all it may be the only fault in 50,000 or 100,000 miles.

However if in six months time you are on first name terms with the service manager, know the receptionist's boyfriend's mothers's name, the reg number of the courtesy car off-by-heart and know without looking what number coffee/white/strong/sugar/extra white/extra sugar/whipped is on their vending machine then you can complain!

Given that sentencing won't be until next week; many of you have already tried, convicted and hung him anyway.

I'm not saying that is wrong, but this thread seems to have drifted somewhat from motoring discussion into an impromptu court session -

so locked.

This was a quote from the New Scientist Last word section. The questioner had queried why the ring finger is less flexible than the others. Full link at:

www.newscientist.com/backpage.ns?id=mg19125672.800

One answer was as follows:

"The ring finger has the least dexterity because it is used least. The index finger is used for pointing, the little finger is extended while drinking tea and the middle finger is used when driving. The ring finger is used only once, shortly before marriage."

I rather like the explaination for middle finger dexterity. Read more

Reckon that's about enough! ;) (Well ok, it was the only button I hadn't used yet too...)

or can anyone else do any better?

Cut and pasted from an e mail I received from the Exeter Freecycle Group

She is in fairly good condition, garaged, but in need of a bit of
work to keep her / make her really presentable.

Some stats:
-> 50k miles on this engine
-> Reasonably new paint job
-> very little (significant) rust
-> New welds underneath
-> New tyres
-> All electrics work

I want to keep the stereo

Needs
-> a new roof lining
-> a new hatch (or some work on the old one)
-> probably a bit more welding underneath within a year or so
-> freeing up of some moving parts. Been sitting for a few months.

SHE IS FAST AS HELL ITSELF.

I even have a spare car for spares.

I should really be selling her, but I'd never get what she is worth
to me. So, I will give her away to someone that will / can do her
justice... a genuine enthusiast. It's like I'll be giving away one
of my children.

The Morris Marina topped the list of Melting Motors revealed yesterday (article dated 31st Aug 2006), with only 745 left on the road out of the 807,000 sold in the UK.
Second place in the table compiled by Auto Express is the square-fronted Mark IV and V Ford Cortina, popular because it was cheap to fix.

It's a shame really.
BMC was the only British mass-producer to try and forge ahead with modern engineering like front-wheel-drive, rubber or hydrolastic suspension, overhead camshaft engines, five-speed gearboxes etc but because the buying public was stuck in the past where Ford and others still supplied tin boxes on cart springs BMC thought it ought to sell something similar. As I recall even the dealers thought it was a backward step.
Now people only remember carp like the Marina.

Having discounted a Brera on cost and practcality, I saw a 159 in the showroom and thought it looked great. Used prices are falling and I wondered if anyone had any ownership experiences to pass on. (I like the GT as well....what is a man to do) Read more

Wait till you see the 159 Tourer (think that´s what they call the estate).
That really is a storker.
One rumbled past me the other day - 3.2 V6 4WD. Looked well tasty in black.

Hi guys, have read to death about ford's starting troubles with diesels but needs help spesific to my problem.

The car is a M reg escort 1.8TD

It started and ran for abit, then cut out, had break down people out who said it could be filters etc etc he primed the filter which i belive is the bosch type? the black plastic bit you push is on a angle at the top of the filter housing.

anyway, it ran fine for a few days then did the same again, once again the breakdown people came, he said it prob fuel filter or pump, primed it, and it ran.

Now though,t it wont start at all.
I have changed the filter (and the seals it came with) and 2 glow plugs (only 2 cuz the other 1 is rusted in, and the other you cant reach very well (i'd had enough by this time))

Still no good, but even if i prime it it wont start.
Now my question is, when i prime it, it takes ages befor it starts spitting fuel out the block bit and becomes stiff to push.
should it?
Also there is a hissing noise when it goes in and out.....so to me this says the diaphram is knackered but i would like some more expert views?
Also when left for a few mins there is now pressure in the filter after being primed.

any help? cheers Read more
