OK, the incredibly complicated in-dash 6CD changer in the Mondeo is playing up slightly, it is a Ford 6006e double DIN size, all is not lost, I have some tips to follow myself that might yet sort it out and a repair may well be economical, however if it comes to it a new replacement would not be so, five hundred and fifteen quid - I kid you not!!!!. I know, I know look on e-bay.

Now I have seen a Focus with a single DIN unit in the double din slot and a blanking plate filling up the hole, I am told that you can get a cubby hole to fit below (or above?) the single din unit, much more useful and more asthetic than a blanking plate, any ideas where? If so I might consider a decent Sony etc single CD (with compatible green illumination) and in-boot 10/12 CD changer. However would an aftermarket Sony etc use the same connectors for power, speakers and remote controls? (the aerial connect is surely std) and would it be compatible with the Ford steering column remote controls?

Many thanks. Read more

Fixed the Ford changer this am, a bit of TLC, fingers crossed. Still might think of getting an MP3 unit some time though!

Thanks to all.

Hi
We are stopping in the Bayswater/Hyde Park area of London for 4 nights and have so far received quotes from BCP and various other carparks of between £90 to £150 !!!!
Does anyone know how much it costs to park overnight (for 4 nights) in any of the tube stations on the outskirts, preferably north west/west side of London?
Alternatively, do you know of any overnight car parks in the same area, close to a tube line?

Thanks alot x Read more

"Other motorists ignored electronic motorway signs which warned them about the oncoming vehicle and asked them to slow to 20mph. "

I have never seen a motorway sign showing 20mph.
Re a recent thread on the credibility of these signs being undermined, this really was one to be taken seriously. Read more

Decided upon a car and paid my deposit. What happens - another dealership (who I rang up at the weekend and they couldn't match the price) rings me up, queries me about the deal (I vary figures in my favour slightly) and what do they do but offer me a brand new (will be 56 plate) same spec model for £350 less! I'm buying a 4 month old, few miles on the clock one. Course now I'm a little disappointed signed the paperwork and paid £200 deposit. This sounds too good to be true! Of course being the honest sort of girl that I am rang my dealer and told him and he said too late the car is on its way. Fair enough and I'll get over it. Just shows - patience is a money saving virtue! Read more

Reckon "55" in your number plate will look neater than "56"
anyway, only prob is that I guess you will be the
2nd owner of the 55 reg car.

Totally agree "55" looks great on mine.
BTW why didn't new style registrations begin on "01" in 2001, I had a "Y" reg early 2001 and my neighbour bought his "51" reg late 2001.

hi, i am new to diesels. other cars '66 Zephyr and 2.8 Capri. The scenic drives great and smoke free but it has a rough /lumpy idle. i put some millers diesel + in and it cured it for a while. Blocked injectors or time for a glow plug change???
Any ideas appreciated. Cheers. Read more

SFAIK glow plugs are only for starting the engine and can have no effect on how it runs after this. Changing glow plugs is not going to help a lumpy idle.

Ive just bought myself a nice new 2001 306 hdi estate. When i drove it i thought a few squashed bugs had been swept across the glass by the wipers.

Now ive had chance to clean it, it seems as if a few stones have been swept across.

Is there anyway of claiming on insurance for new glass or getting this repaired?

My only experience of replacement glass was a few years ago.
I had the HRW replaced. It was not the same as the original. It had a different curvature.
How do I know? Easy. The Hella third stop light, with a light shield, that I had so carefully cut to fit no longer mated with the glass. I was not amused.

My 1.2 litre 8 valve 2001 punto engine has just cooked itself to death at 71k miles.
What is a reasonable price to pay for a reconditioned engine to be supplied and fitted?
Are there any pitfalls associated with fitting a recon engine like immobiliser problems etc.
Your advice would be appreciated. Read more

Kith, my Punto was regularly serviced by the main Fiat dealer right up to a service 2 weeks before the head gasket went and took the engine with it. I had explained before the service that I was concerned about the engine running hot, but nothing was done at the service.
I complained but I was told it was just one of those things, great for endearing someone to a brand!
The first replacement engine was supplied and fitted by the main dealer and the car still serviced by them until that too destroyed itself.
I cannot see what more I could have done by means of preventative maintenance.
Strange that the car was ok after the second replacement engine, a used one, fitted by my local garage and not by the main dealer.
Surely you should not have to suffer such problems with a "modern" car?
I now run a Honda by the way - enough said!

Apparently the minister Ladyperson, one of our chief torturers, used to speed and at one time had nine points on his licence, it said in today's Terrorflag. He claimed that being pulled so often and getting wiggings from the beak changed his attitude to driving.

Of course hypocrisy is only one of hundreds of the mostly rather rank qualifications for those wanting to be ministers. Someone has to fill these posts it seems. Perhaps Mr Ladyman is all right in private. But he represents a government whose discourse on the private automobile is populist, opportunist and carelessly destructive.

Yesterday foxhounds; today drivers; tomorrow the ordinary decent left-wing namby-pambies who favour all this stuff but will by then be deemed evil for some specious reason or other.

It occurs to me that, with a car, I could stay somewhere north (which is handier for me) of the Tuscany area ... anyone any ideas/experience - any good websites with property to let would be useful .... Read more

I was always told to leave on charge for at least 14 to 16 hours for the first ever time - with the phone switched off.

My previous 6230, I scrolled around a lot of it's functions and also set up the email and internet access with it during it's first charge, and subsequently the battery would only last between 1½ to 2 days before needing a recharge.

My current N70 I left switched off, and left charging for nearly 20 hours. The N70 has the same battery as the 6230, and the specs say that the battery won't last as long between charges as my previous 6230, yet I get around 3 days use out of the N70 before it needs recharging.
