I have an 2002 A4 Avant 1.9 TDi 130BHP with an annoying problem.

When starting the engine from warm the revs briefly rise to about 2,000rpm then drop back to normal. Additionally, the idle speed occasionally sits at 1200rpm or so, then drops back to normal (800-900rpm). I am wondering if the two fault are related.

Points to note,

- the overrevving does not occur when the engine is cold
- the overrevving happens say 2 in every 3 warm starts
- my Audi dealer has had the car in for service but found no fault
- I start the car as I always have - no accelerator

Not a serious problem I admit, more annoying, but the overrevving must be doing a small amount of harm. I'm guessing a faulty sensor may be to blame.

Any advice welcome.

How easy is it to replace this and/or the throttle position sensor? I am happy with spanner work etc. Also, any idea on the cost of these sensors?

Maybe the author hadn't bothered to reset the date on his watch. Mine currently shows "FRI 21"!

Has anyone heard the new safe driving ads running on Virgin radio? I'm a bit tired of hearing heads smash into each other in the seatbelts ad because I wear my seatbelt and don't drink drive, and the "Don't drive tired" one has a man talking in the most sleep inducing way he can, which is probably a tiny bit irresponsible if someone is tired!

They're probably on the internet somewhere.

CFM out of Carlisle has a good one along the lines of...

"Mrs Jones was 5 minutes late for a meeting." Lots of tyre screaching and a crashing sound. "She's now the late Mrs Jones. Kill your speed. Not yourself!"

There's a range of them, but with essentially the same message. Short and to the point. Very good ads if you ask me.

Entirely my fault, but I knocked one of my wheels on a pavement whilst trying to avoid oncoming vehicle. The silver thing that makes the wheel look nice (is it called a trimming?) fell off. The woman that had forced me out of the way kindly pointed this out.

I was very embarrassed, and went and grabbed the metal thing, and tried to fit it back on, thought I'd done it but by the time I got back home it wasn't there anymore. Didn't find it on my way back either.

Can I get one of these, I presume cheapy, things readily (only want one) or do I have to get 4?

I was in my local Ford dealer this morning and he has a poster with pictures of 60+ trims on it;no prices but I've always found him to be as good if not better then local auto parts shops on prices.

Hi Ted,

I see that you're new here. It appears you've upset the swear filter. You're welcome to try again, but this time with no profanities please.

I have just bought a new diesel but was wondering if there is there much difference between the diesel supplied by BP and Shell?

Thanks. Read more

Shell, Texaco (IIRC same stuff) and BP Ultimate are the best, the latter is clearly a different formula from the smell, it smells like Millers Diesel Plus so probaly has cetane boosters added, worth the 5% premium IMO.

Went to fill up at a Shell station on the A38 south of Saltash/Landrake yesterday though the pumps were U/S, I noticed the price was 95.9p/ltr, carried on to the Shell station near Ashburton where it was only 91.9p/ltr, those U/S pumps saved me a couple of quid.

My Rav4 owning friend has become tired of it for one reason and another. She likes vans and is thinking of ordering a Renault Kangoo, 1.6 petrol auto with a/c, which she thinks will cost about £15k.

Sounds a lot to me for a smallish ven. I thought the most powerful diesel variant would probably be better, but apparently it isn't available with auto (essential for this person).

Does anyone know anything about the model, and whether any discounts would be available anywhere? And have I gathered from the execration heaped by most people on the Laguna that Renault autoboxes are no good? Read more

Some friends who started a courier business also needed a small automatic van - only choice a couple of years ago was the Kangoo. It's done well over 100,000 miles and running well.

>>I'm not up to date with automotive electronics but having the engine controller on the same bus as the ancilliaries sounds like careless design to me.

On the later Vauxhalls, there are, IIRC, three CAN buses for high speed devices, intermediate, and low speed devices - data can be passed between the buses at the point where they all meet, the so-called column integration module.

The high speed bus is particularly prone to problems caused by poor or corroded connectors, and incorrect termination, which can cause unwanted reflections along the bus.

I think that CAN is a bit of bodge in the way that it has been implemented, I have seen that the error rate for signal transmission is not small.

As I've already seen some dealers really struggle fault finding with these systems, I dread to think how the independent sector is going to deal with them, without manufacturer's information or tools.
