We have had numerous threads of favourite cars, cars you would buy if you won lottery etc, but from your knowledge of the backroom and its posters, whose car would you want?

I will start it off with Patently's 911..... , and I quite fancy a shot of midlifecrisis' company car.... Read more

I would like GRowler's Ford thingummy. If Growlette would permit! (I'm sure that she prefers that to the Harley)

Friend currently has R Reg Scenic, looking to update car. Only her and her 2 year old son although sometimes carries her elderly parents. Majority of time car is used for her 2 mile round journey to work.

She wants to retain the high up seated position, wants to spend about £5k over her own car (guessing at about 2k trade in), so total spend £7k.

Isn't keen on another Scenic. Today she looked at a Zafira (7 seats I know!) and then a Meriva which she really liked.
She did originally want a C Max but can't get any in her price bracket.

Deal will need to be via a dealer, doesn't want the hassle and risk of selling or buying privately.

What other cars should she look at ? CbC breakdown for Meriva seems outdated, no real feedback yet on problems, ownership experience. Other sites have suggested front visibility is poor at corners.

Fusion? I have suggested Modus but she is not too keen on it for some reason.

Any advice gratefully accepted. Read more

Would reckon a 1.6 would be enough for the journeys she does? I see that it is "Corsa based" but I assume it is like a lot of MPV type cars which make great use of the space inside them? Could a child seat and possibly 2 adults fit in the back?

Can anyone help ref sourcing a supplier of full length, i.e. with the rear seats folded flat, load liner? I think Ford used to do one for the Mk 1 Mondeo, but have not come across one since.

We have a Shogun Sport in which we transport several dogs. Mitsubishi advertise 2 load area liners (seats up), a rigid one costing a 3-figure sum, and a flexible one which the local dealer tells me isn't available! It is the flexible one we are after, but ideally for the full length.
Google throws up some USA suppliers, but nothing UK.

thanks

The advantage of making your own is that you can fully customise it to your own requirements. You may want the side pieces higher, or lower, or only really need a floor. You could even decide whether you actually wanted it to cover the entire floor, or may be shape it so that one of the seats stayed unfolded and the box fitted round it. Do you need a lip by the tailgate, or want it flat for sliding things in? Do you want a folding lip, or fixed?
I wanted to be able to fill the back with logs, or bricks, without spoiling the seats, so I needed sides that were quite high. On the other hand it has to take up no space at all when not in use.

If it needs odd shapes to clear door grabs etc, cut out the board and glue canvas loosely over the hole.

The only disadvantage is that colleagues who see it want me to make one for them too!

Recently changed my megane (01) for laguna 2 (02) I am delighted with laguna except radio/cd.
Meganes were louder without distorting and had decent reception on the radio.
Has anyone got experience of changing head units for a more powerfull unit, but keeping the stalk control and display unit, and what can I do about the aerial? Read more

Thanks all for all your advice and help. I am still trying to decide whether to change the hu or to use a supplimentary amp. I feel that the amp would be the most economic way to go, but I may just splash out on a top range sony, which, apparently, will give me full compatability. Thanks again for your comments

Driving on said Motorway today I was wonderering why the M25 has got a bit of a sad number for its name.

As arguably the most well known road in Britain or even Europe i'm sure it could be renamed with something more fitting.

After all the M1 is named after the Great North Road and the M4 after the Great West road, in Canada they have the Queen Elizabeth Way around Toronto, in the U.S. the experssways named after Presidents...and so on, we have the worlds largest ring road named er.. the M25... a non-discript 'A' road that runs through Surrey! Even the London Orbital name is not really used much.

Mine would be 'The Queen Elizabeth II ring road' which would tie up with the bridge.

Any other suggestions? Read more

It has a name - the "London Orbital Motorway".

Well done whoever thought that up. About as interesting as driving on the blessed thing!

Does anyone know if it's possible to adjust the headlamps on a 2001/Y reg Ford Transit T260 for use in Europe, or whether 'Beam Benders' have to be used. Thanks. Read more

Hi all

My girlfriend's dad has a 1937 Chrysler/ Plymouth six cylinder positve earth. This week the wire from the coil to the ignition switch burnt out. Two Q's really

1 He wants to test the coil before ordering a new one. It doesn't smell cooked up. Can anyone point me towards how to do this please? He does have an old krypto tuning station (massive thing) & there is a massive manual with it. I was hoping not involve it as the manual alone looks like a week's worth of reading.

2 The initial fault. Any ideas, or could it have simply have been a component failure or chaffed wire to earth? Obvioulsy had a huge amount of current flowing through it.

The car was out on a run when this happened. I don't know wether it occurred during the run, or on start up.

Damn odd points in it. Single sided with the other contact attached to the base plate itself with like a crude vernier adjust.

That reminds me-emailing USA specialists isn't forthcoming on finding an electronic ignition replacement. Can it be THAT hard? I can use a soldering iron & did have some basic electronic training years ago, so I'm not frightened to have a go! Thoughts?!

Thanks all. Makes for a departure from my diesel & dog ones! Read more

Ah, that will change how to check the secondary resistance. I gave the checking procedure for a more modern coil where one end of the HT is connected to the LT circuit within the coil.

Vehicles with an insulated return electrical system also have coils with four terminals rather than three.

In more modern vehicles, prior to the introduction of coil packs and individual coils, coils were very reliable - I've only ever replaced a handful of them. However, I can imagine a near 70 year old coil might not be as well insulated as it was when it was new. Having said all that, the checking methods given above should enable you to determine where the fault really lies.

Some do it for a single driver having multiple vehicles. I don't know about multiple users though. The company van might create a problem if it is used for business - the policy is a single policy, you can't say something like "thats for weekends, thats for business" etc.

Hi everyone,

I wondered if this would be a good place to ask some advice. On Tuesday I had a car accident, the motorcyclist is now saying that the accident was my fault! Although I see no way that I could have pulled out in front of him as he hit me in the back.

I would be so grateful if you would just give me your opinions on the following diagram. Does he have a case at all as I dont believe that he does...

Thank you in advance

>>I would save your energy for convincing the insurance companies and the police.

again, ditto.
however, despite this advice having been given a number of times above, it seems kitty wants ignore your wise comments; and fight her corner with the backroomers to convince them that she was in the right.
her attitude towards bikers will not help her at all, and in my eyes this type of response would merit the judgement that "we have an an attitude problem here".

Again ditto.
Do not try and judge the outcome.

An example.
A few years ago I was a witness to an accident.
I gently rolled to a halt at the white line in the middle lane of three at traffic lights, at a major cross road, as they turned red.
Then a large bike rolled to a halt on my right in a right turn only lane.
The lights changed and the bike accelerated and moved left into my lane. I had not moved at this point in anticipation of his probable lane change.
The biker rode into the rear quarter of a 15 cwt van that jumped the lights.
I spent hours re witness statements and a morning AT the court. At lunchtime I was informed by some bottom rung legal kid that I was not required as my evidence did not support their case.

I still consider the biker was significantly in the wrong but I will never know the outcome of the case.
I am now very reluctant to be a witness after this experience.
I consider that I was THE prime witness and was expecting to be in the court.

So kitty I suggest you should take care how you follow all this up.
