I have recently acquired a S40 1.9 TD SE on a 98 plate and have a question. Apart from a normal service I want to change the coolant, my nearest Volvo dealer is over a 30 mile round trip away so I popped in to Halfords and brought some Anti freeze which is red in colour and is a silicate free organic acid formula to Volvo / Renault 41-01-001 standard.
As I'm going to go for a complete rad flush - can I replace green with red?? On another site I been advised that the colour isn't important just flush well - but I don't want to make an expensive mistake
Thanks and regards

Have just imported a Nissan cube car from Japan and need to convert speedo which just shows kph at present, to mph to pass SVA test.
Any idea where to get dial kit in mph which can fit with this car model.
Many thanks in advance

I wonder if anyone could tell me what would cause the trip computer on the dashboard to reset itself randomly when starting the engine?
When it resets it makes a whirring sound and the distance travelled is reset along with the mpg & miles remaining in the tank figure.
This doesnt happen everytime i start it up, just occasionally.
The car is a 2000 X RSi 1.6 16v 75k on the clock
I checked the relay box above the NSF wheel and there is no sign of water ingress or corrosion
Cheers

Sounds like a voltage related problem. Maybe the battery is showing early signs of failure. Most fast fit places should be able to do a free test on it for you.
Does anyone know who styled the new Clio? Was it Le Quement? Read more
I really liked the current (Well, previous now I guess) one. It didn't look too much like every other clone-a-like out there. It certainly look nice straight from the factory, in my opinion anyway.
Dealer has just changed the front pads, they weren't down to metal, but not much life left in them.
Now the pedal feels spongy.
Never had that problem after doing pads on the Xsara, 405 or Maestro before I owned this car.
The (front wheel) handbrake is really firm like it used to be when the car was newer. Thats good.
I haven't judged stopping power as I have driven gently so far.
Can you get air into the system when winding the calipers back in? Read more
Forgot to say, the brakes pull up well and stop the car fantastically. Just the pedal feel isnt the best and the clutch probs mentioned elsewhere on here.
I have just purchased a car that had previously been on cherished plates so the only part of the logbook I received is the green new keepers supplement - the V5 C/2 that has been stamped by the DVLA with the original registration number of the car.
I wish to register the car in my name, obtain a new full V5 logbook and I also wish to tax the car as soon as possible. Can you kindly tell me which forms I need to achieve this and whether I can do this at a post office or if I need to visit my nearest VRO. many thanks in advance Read more
I have just bought an 03 honda accord 2.4 type S tourer from a car supermarket(after much deliberation i might add - thanks to HJ for making me aware of how good this car is!)
Unfortunately, the electric tailgate doesnt seem to work properly. it closes fine, but will not open when i press the button most of the time. It seems to open a tiny bit then beep 3 times and closes. This is what it is supposed to do if it comes across some resistance. The catch releases fine and everything appears ok visually. I can see no rub marks on the bodywork to indicate a problem.
Anyone have any ideas on possible solutions. I know it has some sensors, but dont know where they are. It maybe a dealer job (should be covered by warranty for another 9 months), but id like to fix it myself if possible.
thanks in advance. Read more
Got a call from my dealer this morning. The replacement gas struts have arrived and I'm taking it in next week.
Hi all, hope you can help me. I have recently started a new job which involves a long drive to work and back every day. this has given me 2 problems
the first is that i am spending a forune on petrol- I only have a ford Ka luxury at the moment, but i am thinking of changing to a diesel to try and cut my fuel bills.
The second is that the prolonged periods of regular driving have aggravted my sciatica and back probelms, particulaly in my clutch leg, so I was thinking I ought to get an automatic to help stop this.
my probelm therefore is that i want a small, fuel econonic, cheap to buy (ie around £8k), automatic that doesnt look like a skip on wheels (as i have got used to my little luxuries like electric windows, heated windscreen and cd player). it would be a newish car (maybe 02 plate onwards)
can anyone recommend such a car? I weas thinking of a clio diesel? any comments on this?
i have read some of the posts on the diesel/auto thing, but it mostly seems to cover large/ expensive cars
thanks for your help!

Are Ford autos still crap Blue? Would the Megane be a
better car solely because it wasn't a Ford automatic?

The diesel auto Focus and C-Max have a CVT gearbox, about which there has been much discussion in this forum, so not the traditional Ford auto.
All,
A week ago, just before we went on holiday some one bumped their car into my side door - causing damage to both passenger side doors.
I have no idea how much it'll cost to repair - must be at least £500, I'd have thought. I have max. no claims discount (protected) - is it better for me to pay for this repair myself, or shall I go thru the insurance - someone at work said that even with protected NCD, my premium will still go up next year if I claim thru the insurance - which I don't quite understand.
Apologies for the naive question!

I'll have to go out and crash my car, as my
premium always seems to go up each year without making any
claims. :-)
I didn't say my premium wouldn't go up when prevailing premium rates go up, merely that mine wouldn't go up AS A RESULT OF MAKING A CLAIM, i.e. my premium would not be loaded.

All,
My 'V' reg modeo has had a flashing brake light for about 3 months - I top up the brake fluid, and the light goes away - after about 4-5 weeks, it flashes again, and I add more brake fluid.
Could this just be a leakage issues, or is this a symptom of some other problem?
Thanks in advance.

The reason rear cylinders weep more than front ones is they are subject to a higher hydraulic pressure loading. The pressure in the sytem is equal, but if you have ever seen a front piston out, it is nearly 2 inches across. A rear is about 1 inch, so the same pressure is on less of a rubber seal. The effect is a higher pressure that is less tolerant of any weakness. Hence it will weep if weak. Once on to the friction material, it ruins them.
They are cheap to relace so lond as all the pipes detatch. Corroded ones can be very difficult.

If the car is going through SVA then you need a mph speedo. I doubt you will get a replacement mph face for your Cube.
I suggest buying a 'speedo conversion chip' (small electronic circuit that is spliced into the speedo signal wire and divides the pulse frequency by 5/8). Your speedo will now read in mph. You just need to cover the 'kph' text over and re-label it 'mph'.
There are a variety of companies that sell speedo convertor chips, many on the web.
