I have removed pistons to install new rings, but find the old ones are stuck in their grooves, possibly by a combination of age and corrosion. The piston ring gap is closed and I have almost given up....there must be a way to remove these little darlings.
Can someone please show me the light.

Almost there in a deal for a new mkv golf sport--3 door,as 3 door does look more sportier in appreance than 5 door.
However when I come to sell the 3 door would I have problems or low part ex --does a 5 door hold more value than a 3 door?
I.E for families.
Comments appreciated before I finally decide--thanks Read more
Haven't been keeping count, but put me down as another who wouldn't want a 5 door hatch...especially one with sporting intentions.
5 door Golfs have absolutely flooded the market as I have been eyeing GT TDI Golfs as my next possible car and I have to wade through lots of 5 doors to find 3 door models.
I hope I never reach a stage where I choose my car based on what I think someone else would want to buy from me at a later date.
Just bought a very nice 99 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI at auction tonight, and notice it needs one or two minor things doing to it.
1.n/s/f and n/s/r/ indicators don't work,although the front wing one does.(Bulbs??)
2.n/s/r/brake light doesn't work.(Again bulb??)
3.Spanner light is on.How do you re-set it if you service a car yourself?
4.I'm assumimg it has climate control, but it's at 14deg,and it doesn't seem to move using the left hand button. Can it be turned down?
5.At 72k,is it due for a cambelt if it's not been changed?
Sorry to ask so many questions, but there was no book with it,but until I can speak to the previous owner tomorrow,I thought I'd ask you guys. Read more
" notice you can buy remote fobs off E.Bay,and was wondering how much they cost to have re-programmed,as opposed to buying a new one,and what about the actual key itself? How do you get around the problem of it not fitting your particular door?"
Do a search on GSF discussion forum..they cover reprogarmming of Xantia keys (same as Peugeot).

Ready to purchase a new Golf Sport in Black,we have always had black cars 6 in the last 5 years and all metallic, being Astras and 2 Honda Civics 3 door( poor paintwork!!)
However should we go for the more expensive metallic or non metallic--we look after our cars extremely well and wash-wax-polish etc to keep them looking "like new".
One salesman says metallic sell on better and another says does not matter.
Any help and comments appreciated plus saving £365.
With thanks.

Been looked into on the golf forum. Someone waiting on a Diamond Black GTI phoned their dealer. He was told it is being dropped but cars currently on order should be OK.
Hello
Recently my passenger side drive shaft went (forgive the lack of technical knowledge - it basically came loose and spun round with no drag to the actual wheel). This was replaced with a second hand part by my old man, but low and behold about 3 weeks later the exact same thing happened. Its now going to be replaced with a new part so hopefully everything will be fine, but does anyone know whether theres something else that might be causing this?
I am hoping its just a dodgy second part, but any advise greatly appreciated.
The car was involved in a head on collision some time ago

My dad has checked and theres no wear in the front suspension...He was thinking that there might be something wrong with the gear box or engine mountings but these seem to be fine....
As some will know I got nabbed by a camera at a traffic light for alledgedly jumping a red signal. I took advice, did not contest it, paid £60 and posted off my licence. This was two weeks ago now. How long is it reasonable to wait for its return (with the 3 points added)? Read more
Now that wouldn't be a great surprise over your morning coffee.

Quick question - which TDi engine will last longer, the 130 TDi 4-cyl, or the 2.5 V6 ? I plan on running my forthcoming (used) Passat for a few years, and still can't make up my mind which to buy - at 3 years old the difference in price isn't that much.
I am wondering if the less-stressed V6 diesel will last longer ... anyone out there run either a 130 or the V6 to some high mileages ? Read more
Arnold2, I know you only asked for opinions of the two Passat variants you mentioned, but as an owner of a Passat Sport 1.9 TDi, I still feel it worth repeating the suggestion that you look at other alternatives unless you want to spend more money improving the handling of a Passat (aside from any potential reliability issues). That's unless you can get a Passat for a considerably better price than equivalent alternatives that should be at least as reliable, if not more so. I would consider a 320d, a 156, an A4/A6/Superb, a Mazda6, a higher-spec Mondeo, possibly an Accord or an Avensis, even a Rover 75!
I find the Passat adequate, no more - adequately swift, quite comfortable, less than satisfying to drive enthusiastically, etc.
Of course, if you really feel that a Passat is the only car for you, by all means ignore the above! And go for the 1.9, for reasons listed above, and spend £300 on a remap instead of on fuelling and servicing the thirstier engine.

Vroom, vroom - mmm, doughnuts ...
Does anyone out there know why light coloured road (beige) surfaces are much noiser than black ones ? I have heard it said that the biege ones are concrete as it's cheaper and therefore harder than tarmac, thus noiser ? There are many section of the M25 and M20 for example that use concrete surfaces, and the noise levels are much higher than the tarmac surfaces.
And to follow, any advice on a decent model of tyre that is quiet ? Read more
I would never believe the influence tyres play in road transmission noise until I heeded H.J`s advice recently and switched from Pirelli P6000 to Michelin Pilot Primacy on my 320d. The difference is so great that it is like driving a totally different car. Whereas previously the noise from the Pirellis on concrete roads was such that you needed to turn up the radio, with the Michelins the car is now almost silent irrespective of road surface.
I would add that I have no connection with Michelin whatsoever, but merely a satisfied customer.
When I was young, in the 1970's, a lot of people used to say "ren-alt". These days, it seems just about everyone says "ren-o".
When did the change come about? Does anyone still say "ren-alt"? And if not, when did you last hear someone using the Olde English pronunciation? Read more

Comparing notes with colleagues those with the standard wheels are getting around 50mpg but those with the 17" wheels are getting closer to 40mpg.
The tyre is slightly wider on the 17" rims but can a tyre really account for this big a difference in fuel economy.
Mine is on 16" wheels and Michelin Pilot Premacys, one of the cars on 17" is on Yokohamas. Read more
Sorry Hitch, the Accord is very well known for having a thirst (although there are individual exceptions).
Check you've got the new EGR software, and try running four or five tanks of premium fuel through, it may help. Also make sure tyre pressures are okay, perhaps add 1-2 psi?
Personally, I seem to have finally got up to about 45 mpg in mixed use; perhaps mine is finally run in after 80k miles? It is *very* sensitive to driving style - drive like a monk and you may well be able to add 5 mpg instantly.
Best of luck, and sorry to hear you've been stung just like I have been. It's about an extra £600 a year in running costs I wasn't expecting. Bah.
They're not cast iron pistons are they ?
A bit of a rarity I know, but they have been used.
