Hi
Been getting quite interested in possible getting one of these. They seem a cheap way of getting hold of a 154mph V6 engined car that will do 60 in 7 seconds and is only group 14 insurance. They seem to be well equipped, refined and spacious. Been looking around and you seem to be able to get a good one for around £9k. I know the Mondeo probably handles a little better but I want refinement and comfort over absolute agility. The hatch versoin also appeals since more prestige brands are all saloons which limits practicality somewhat.
The Vauxhall image is a bit of a problem but when I see a GSi I always think they look pretty good. The other concern is the famously bad Vauhall dealers and reliability problems. but the new Vectra seems to be a lot better than the old model.
What do people think of the GSi? Can any owners / drivers give me any feedback?

Sorry - I know this is close to the 100 posts and will undoubtedly need a mod to create a new IHAQ thread. Look at it this way - I'll be doing smokie a favour - practice!
I'm not au fait with banking at all but I had a though before. As I understand it, banks get their money from you and use that money to loan to people, dispense to customers etc... In simple terms, let's say there's a bank with 2 customers (forgetting the logistical problems for a moment) of which I am one and Mr Family is the other.
I deposit £5,000 into that bank. Good old RF comes along and realises that he's getting a bit of a stoop and needs osteopathic surgery pronto. The cost of this surgery amounts to £2,500 so he goes along to our bank and takes a loan out (he doesn't have any savings). That £2,500 could only have come from one place - me. (I realise this is a severely basic interpretation of what goes on but bear with me on this).
So, on a larger scale, what would happen if every customer of a certain bank decided to clean out their savings on exactly the same day? What would happen?
(Yes - I am that bored.)

alvin - looks like your educated guess is going to be proven correct; a quick Google for the exact error message ("power failure setting aborted" in quotes exactly as here) returned one hit.

Just a little warning for anyone contemplating buying a used Merc CDI. Get the glowplugs checked before you buy.
I just bought a CDI from auction, intending to sell on. It needs a glowplug. After loads of work stripping it down to get access (very awkward), I can't shift the glowplug. Its stuck in the head and there's a risk of snapping it off.
I rang a MB tech mate of mine. Apparently what they do in the dealer workshop is use a torque wrench to undo them. If the plug doesn't free by the time a certain torque is reached (I don't have the figure, sorry) then they abandon the job and leave the duff plug in place. Obviously if the plug snaps then the head most likely will have to come off and its a VERY expensive job. Read more
I have a small engineering workshop and i have had a 98% success at removing snapped mercedse glow plugs both the 10 m/m & 12 m/m(without removal of cylinderhead) it never seems to be the thread thats the problem but the element at the bottom that siezes into the head
Just been reading on another forum of a poor individual who damaged a rental van and subsequently has had a £1000 excess charge debited from his bank account (paid by debit card).
Apparantly the small print on the rental agreement he signed had this clause so he has no comeback....is this reasonable? Read more
Lol...makes you laugh when the bog standard Transit/Sprinter van over here is lucky to squeeze 80mph out of its 70-90 hp engine....

If it was definitely the one on the Basildon bound side of the road then you're fine. Some of the Gatsos in this neck of the woods are a bit strange, I've been flashed by one on Southend seafront at 25mph driving towards it and the redlight camera at Kent Elms has flashed me on no less than 5 occasions when I've been turning right out of the filter lane towards it, have never heard a whisper from the BIB. Always been 2 flashes though.

My 1999 Vectra 2.0 CDX heater has stopped working, but the climate control, fan and air conditioner all work fine. All the fuses are good, so I'm guessing the heater matrix has failed.
What might cause a matrix to suddenly fail? If it's become blocked can it be cleaned or is replacement the only option? Read more
Problem solved! I replaced the coolant shut-off valve but it made no difference, apart from getting me frustrated over taking an hour to release two "quick release" hose connectors to the matrix.
In the end I took it to the garage. They said the air conditioner was not venting. They charged me £135 to clean out the vent pipe and drain off the condensate. It now heats fine.
iv got a volvo S40 year 1996 1.8l (manual) and had a little bit of a problem recently. i switched my car on and drove it to the local petrol pump, car turned on first time with no problems, once at the pertol pump, i turned my car off but the radio was playing for around 5 minutes.
went to switch my car on once filling up 'air in my tyres and the car wasnt starting. all of the lights in the the dashboard were lighting up as usual and when turning the ignition, there was a ticking sound but no effort of the enging rolling over.
now, i assumed that the battery was at fault and even tried push starting the car, but had no joy with this. i am right in thinking that if there was a bad battery, the car should start when push starting it.
i was just about to jumpstart the car, and thought id try starting it before i jumped it, and the car started as normal, with no struggle at all.
was a bit baffled by this, and was told that it could be the starter motor. am i right in thinking this? battery is in good condition. any way that i can test it to see if this is the problem? was also told that if it happends again, to get a batton and knock the starter motor a fewtimes, and it'l help bail me out and start the car. is this true?
any advice would be appreciated
thanks in advance,

A four cylinder engine always comes to rest/stops in one of
two positions. Either with pistons 1&4 at TDC or pistons
2&3 at TDC.
Nope
Probably somewhere on the compresion stroke approachng TCD.
my accent is destined for the scrap yard after a mere 4 years of life - its lasted longer than my previous sonata which died as a mere 51 plate.

someone knows how to repair or get a chea[p replacement for an ECU unit.
had an auto electrician look at it just to confirm, he plugged in the laptop - and just as i presumed - ecu has broke!
car wont turn over.
anyone got any cheap way of fixing this?
no wonder hyundai give the cars 5 year warrantys - they fall to bits round about then.
while i will keep buying them cause theire cheap, if anyone wants a car to last beyond its 5th birthday - dont buy hyunda Read more
I believe that 2000-on Hyundais conform to the EOBD standards for fault codes (P0 codes) - these are accessed via a standard 16pin connector under the dash. There should be no problem in interpreting the fault codes.
The car won't run without the correct sensor in place.
£71 is not a particularly unusual sum for an OE crank sensor. It might be worth checking out one of the aftermarket parts suppliers like www.nipponautomotive.co.uk. Alternatively ring around a few Hyundia dealers and ask their lowest price, the dealer in Sheffield (Montys) is supposed to offer good discounts.
If you have friends in the Hyundai UK company can't you ask them to get you one at a discount?
hi

Yes, the 1.8 is equally reliable. However the 2.0 is a bit more powerful and no less economical, so I would always go for the 2.0.
The centre dashboard display (LED?) on our Renault Clio has dimmed - the digits (time, temperature, radio station etc) can still be seen but the display is not lit and as fully visible as before.
The vehicle is not fitted with a dashboard dimmer switch.
Is there an LED or bulb I can replace?
What else could have caused this effect?
Any advice or assistance would be appreciated. Read more
The car was registered June 2002.
The display is normally red.
'Overtaking indicators' - as fitted to my Audi and I think they are brilliant. Never had a problem when cancelling them.
