Just done a ~1000mile return trip on the BMW R1150R to Isle of Skye over four nights. First time in ten years. SWMBO said I was mad.
Fantastic scenery despite the rain in the Highlands.
What journey would other Backroomers do for similarly selfish reasons?

As I understand it, the very specific reason that these notices are located precisely where they are is to deter "foreigners", particularly in the event of an emergency when instinct takes over, from swerving to the side of the road on which they are most used to driving, namely to the right in the case of real "foreigners". For those with a natural tendency to swerve to the right, particularly if they are driving a left hand drive car, the problem is exacerbated by the fact that when driving on a single track road, they may well be lulled into a false sense of security and even more likely to swerve to the right in an emergency. Hence the notices ......

The situation is therefore rather more serious than an earlier post implied and I am sure that there are several well-documented cases to confirm that this tendency - both in Scotland and in countries where we are the "foreigners". I have certainly seen the aftermath of two such accidents in the Highlands - one fatal.

On a lighter note GWS, and as another exiled Scot, I have to admire your choice of nickname in view of how it translates into English .....!

hi, my son's mk4 escort is blowing the fuse on the hazard light circuit although all of the indicator bulbs are working ok.
Any ideas?
Also his horn has stopped working, i've put a meter on the horn connection and earth and it's not showing any reading, the fuse is ok.
Any ideas?
As you can see electrics leave me a little stumped!!
thanx Read more

The "Hazard Warning" fuse is for both the hazard warning lights and the horn (I don't know what fuse you're looking at for the horn). So don't worry, both problems are connected. The indicators work independantly from a seperate fuse.

So why does this fuse keeps blowing? As has been said, check the switch for short-circuiting. To rule out the horn circuitry, disconnect the multiplugs from the indicator/light stalk to confirm that it's them that have the problem.

Secondhand switch assemblies are cheap enough from ebay. If you feel like taking the thing apart and having a look yourself, the switch is just two seperate mouldings clipped together. The dim/dip switch twist will I think just come off if you wriggle it and pull it.

Last week me and my mate traveled in the very early morning to work, we came to a small empty junction (in Leeds) and when I tried to brake the Micra brakes pedal went all the way to the floor (basically no brakes). We were going only 27 mph and the junction was empty so we were lucky enough to cross it in red and stop on the other side. We were towed home and found out that the brakes pump has gone. The next week I got a camera notification for going on red light which was on for 66 seconds.
Great! I will pay it and get 3 points on my provo license but how can I complain to the police that a technical brakedown caused all this mess? Do I have any rights? Read more

Fiesta Fanatic

Hi all

I have a Pug 406 Exec on a P plate. I was driving yesterday and pulled up for a few minutes outside my house, when I reversed away and drove off I noticed a small wet patch underneath the centre of the car (not oil or water).

I then drove to a friends house (~100 miles) and when I arrived I turned the engine off, got out of the car and looked underneath only to see a small spurt of water emanate from the middle of the car between the driver and passenger seat. The water is a lot colder than I would expect if it was direct from the radiator.

Anyone got any ideas? I have checked the water reservoir and its fine, and there are no warning lights of low coolant level. Something to do with the A/C?

I'm a bit puzzled!

TIA.

It's the water draining from the A/C evaporator. Perfectly normal.

Never had a blow-out in a car as such.
Only violent deflation was caused by hitting a defective, protriding, expansion joint on the M6 Manchester ship canal bridge. Knocked tyre bead off rim temporarily I guess. Tyre then reinflated itself by the time I'd got to a service area and was very hot.Next day when it had cooled was sucked into the rim.
No visible damage, but obviously replaced it.

I'll soon be changing my car and am looking at the Mondeo. A few questions...

Which engine? I fancy a 2l either petrol or diesel TDCi.
Which trim? I fancy a Ghia or Zetec
Where are the best places to look?

My budget is up to £7k. Best at less than 50k miles and a 51 or newer. I've looked at Car Giant but mileages seem quite high. Am I being unrealistic? Is my best bet an auction?

All advice appreciated Read more

My mate got two year-old March 04 2 litre Mondeo Ghia models from Arnold Clark at a windscreen price of £8,999 each (about £1,000 each less than would have been expected).

He also got full trade-in prices for the two Y-reg Mondeo 1.8 LX cars which were taken in PX plus full tanks of fuel and, overall, felt he had got a brilliant deal; certainly it was far less than he would have had to fork out elsewhere and he had already done his homework.

I thought UK sales stopped in 1995.

Anyway, late model, fuel injected, twin coil wasted spark ignition - might have inertia trip, as mentioned above.

Head gasket problems can make starting difficult due to moisture in the cylinders - is the coolant level where it was when you bought it?
Has it previously started on 4 cylinders, or spluttered a bit and then cleared?

Yesterday started my healthy (Petrol) Citroen Berlingo Multispace . Saw I didn't have enough fuel for my journey, immediately turned off engine, jumped into my other car and made my journey.

Today my Berlingo won't start. Is it because of what I did to it yesterday? Read more

Most modern engine control systems will turn the fuel pump off themselves if you crank at WOT(wide open throttle).Usually spelt out in manual.
