I?ve just changed a rear wheel brake cylinder on my camper van
which hasa Ducato chassis. I?ve bled the brakes through out and get a hard brake peddle with the engine off if I start the engine I loose the brakes. The camper van as stood idle for six years but I have flushed the system out with new brake fluid. Any idea?s why I loose the brakes on staring the engine?

Don?t think that this problem is particularly related to Ducatos, if you are getting a hard pedal straight away with no pumping necessary you have done job properly.

As you probably know is normal for the pedal to go down a bit further with the servo assistance coming in when the engine starts. If the pedal then floors either (a) the extra pressure in system is finding a leak, should be easy to spot as you can crawl around under a ducato while someone trustworthy is pumping the brakes or (b) the servo has gone home and brake fluid is disappearing into vacuum chamber, eventually to appear in the exhaust.

As the van has stood for a while (b) is not unlikely;

PS unrelated to this fault check hand cables are not seized, mine stuck after 5 months standing

cavi

hello again everyone here is another matter i need help with. my L reg 1.7 td cavalier is due for an MOT next week and i want to know about the emissions. i took my car for a run yesterday with my mate following behind in his car to see if he could see anything untoward that i could not see like if the lights were working etc. my logic told me that if the electrics were to give problems it would stand a better chance of showing on the move and also he was looking for any large amounts of smoke. when we got back he said that it was emitting a normal amout of smoke as you would expect from a deisel maybe less. what my question is does it matter about the volume of smoke? does a large amount of smoke contain large amouts of failable emissions or can you get a large amount of said emissions from a relatively clean exhaust? any thoughs on this would be much appeciated Read more

Before the MOT, check, and if necessary change the air filter. If its not had an oil and filter change in a while then change these too. Put a dose of injector cleaner in the tank and take it for a good run at sustained high revs for at least 20 minutes before taking the car to the MOT centre. This has always worked for mine. If it fails aftyer that its probably time for a new car.

Below is a link to a story in the local rag. It seems that the Ford Consul in which Eddie Cochran met his end may still exist.

As your name is Rover25, I would have thought that Eddie Cochran came after your time.

Perhaps you remember Semprini and Billy Cotton a bit better.

You know, those small things either asthetic or functional that set a car apart.

I.e. I had a Montego as a company car around 1990, a Rover i'll have you not an Austin! The wipers were very clever for the time, they sat on a plastic scuttle panel under the back edge of the bonnet so the galss of the screen was completely clear, when you turned them on they moved onto the screen then mover back and forth, only when turned off did they park themsleves back on the scuttle panel. Even on intermittent (variable too!) they moved on to the screen and stayed on the screen between wipes until switched off again. Read more

I thought of overdrive though forgot to mention it before, I had it on a Dolomite Sprint though it only worked on 3rd and 4th thus giving 6 ratios, leaving it in overdive 3rd while waiting for a gap in the oncoming traffic then flicking the overdrive off and flooring it to overtake then flicking it back in at 6500 rpm was great fun.

My 2.0T S60 has begun to stutter and hesitate for the first few minutes of driving from 'cold'. It can be quite jerky and just has no go at low revs. After a few minutes it improves and finally all is well again, until the next 'cold' start.

It's not like the engine is missing, it's almost as if not enough fuel or air is getting through.

Any ideas?

Hello,

Had a couple of tyres that were losing pressure due to a leak around the valve, visited Rapidfit, problem solved (fingers crossed :-)), as I always do I went to retorque the (over tightened by air hammer!) wheel nuts though I cannot find my reference for the wheel nut torque.

I have done it by hand and I think it will be fine though if anyone has the recommended torque setting in lb/ft it would be appreciated.

Sorted.

This is very amusing stuff, and he deserves more than the one bid he has so far. (Even though his bike 'contains nuts').

That is very funny.

Love the first question about storage for an umbrella... showed the other half who just didn't get it.

Just heard on the news that some hauliers are seeking to introduce these monsters onto our motorways, one chap wants 80 tonners. I suppose as long as they keep to the M ways there will be little effect although they are 25M long. The idea of course is to save fuel. Read more

No Do$h

Yes it's locked, but I can still post so I will.

If they were designed for freight they would have been built
in the areas where freight was required first. As it happens
they were not. Hundreds of thousands of 25 metre 30
ton trucks were not even thought of in 1958.
My mother got fresh milk in 1958 - DAILY - no
motorways then. Thing is you see - it wasnt from
Scotland it was from the farm 20 miles away.

BINGO!

Does anyone else find the new poster campaign from Nissan offensive?
It's for the Navara I think - any way it's a big double cab pick up job.
The car is pictured on a black background for macho effect and the ads feature copy lines like "The new sign for Give Way".
They may as well have written "get one of these and you can use the road on your terms and other road users had better get out of your way".

It is simply irreponsible and if you feel the same way I'd encourage you to write to the ASA and to Nissan. Read more

I am trying to fit a Kenlowe electric fan to a Ford Transit motorhome and am having difficulty making a watertight join around the top-hose connection to the radiator.

Has anyone any good suggestions as to how to get a good seal?

I have the latest neoprene sealing ring supplied by Kenlowe, but still it seeps!

Thanks for any help ....... Michael Read more

The best way would be to get a Transit water outlet with a threaded boss on the side(they were made-I had one on one of my cars} and then put a Fiesta/Escort fan switch in the boss.I was always doubtful of the Kenlowe method-not good engineering.
