I have a 'V' reg 1700cc diesel corsa (bought last September), which is used as a cheap to run motor. It now needs a pair of front tyres. Now, ordinarily I would go to my local fitter & buy the cheapest they have, but I am wondering if this is false economy in the long run? What us the general concensus of opinion regarding tyre life of budget tyres to branded?

(Being a non-turbo diesel, I don't drive too quickly, so am not overly worried about increased grip etc).

I would avoid far eastern cheapies of unknown brand as some
of them are dire in the wet even if you do
drive carefully. Try national tyres two for the price of one
offer. You have to add balancing and valves to the price
but its still good value.

is worth looking at. It's an American government site (I think) but it has just about every tyre you have ever heard of. It includes Traction rating, Temperature rating and wear rating.

Has anyone done this job themselves and can tell me how easy it is/points to watch out for.

I've recently done the same job on my Focus but now need to do it on my wife's car. It's a Mk1 facelift, 1600cc 16v Petrol with ABS.

Don't currently have a Haynes manual for the Scenic, but if it's especially quirky then I'll consider getting one. Hopefully its straight forward though!

Thanks,

Thanks for that good advice. I guess the reason I've had no problems is that both cars involved have had their two-yearly fluid changes within the last few months, so that will have minimised the chances of any problems. With any luck, I won't need to do the same job again on these two cars!

I'm probably being thick/gullible here, but....

My Pug 306 is nearly 6 years old, 65k miles, and having the first round of mechanical bits replaced, exhaust, timing belt and so on.
I've had an annoying vibration on the front, like the wheels are out of balance, and squeaking/clicking/cracking noise on cornering, (anything off centre really) for a while so have been trying to cure it - but with no success.
So far I've replaced the lower arm bushes, anti roll bars, and had the wheels tracked and balanced.
I know the brake discs are thin, but not ready for changing.
No change to the noises though.
A friend said that wheel bearings were 'indestructable these days', and suspension 'should last to 80k miles at least'.

Is he right? Read more

Thank you for all the advice and info.
I will investigate when it stops raining here, and let you know what I find.

I only managed to get 28 correct out of 35 in the mock theory test. It's time for me to swot up on the Highway Code again I think!

When you get down to talking about the value of your part ex, they start phoning around "dealers" and try to get the "best" price for your car(normally low). Is this really the case? Do they REALLY phone someone or is it an act? If you aks for more, they say its down to how much they can get for the car.

How, as a customer, can I combat this???

I agree, if your car is relatively new i would sell privately.

cavi

ihave just recently been to my local auto spares dealer for an air filter for my cavalier and they asked what engine i had in (which is a 1.7 td) and they said it took two filters one for the bigger box just behind the drivers side headlight and one for the rocker cover mounted box. i have looked in my manual to see if this is right and it doen't show two filters nor does it describe it in the maintainance intervals i am wondering if fitting two air filters could in affect choke the the engine. any thoughts?

When I had my Isuzu engined Cavalier,I asked for an air filter for it,and when presented with it,said that it was the wrong one for the airbox behind the headlight,to which the guy told me that there wasn't a one in there, only one on top of the rocker box.

So that is the one you want.

I have a 1995 Toyota celica and it had just failed the emissions test. Almost every part of the test was over the limit. You can do a blink code test on these and it said the O2 sensor had a closed or open circuit. Would a faulty O2 sensor be enough to put all readings over the limit?.I have changed it and it seems to run smoother but I cant just keep taking it for a retest. First I would like to know that it has a fighting chance of passing.

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)

Not overly familiar with Toyota blink codes (they so rarely go wrong!)"the O2 sensor had a closed or open circuit." bit doesnt sound right though. Closed or open LOOP would indicate an intermittently operating sensor. This will cause all sorts of probs with the emissions. Chances are if that was the case you will have cured it.

I had this light come on intermittently, now it's on all the time though. I brimmed the washer fluid and it hasn't turned off. The front washers did and still do work fine. The back ones don't.

Do I have anything to worry about?

Major jam this AM, M5 shut just north of J23 by a bus fire. Bearing in mind it's saturday, for most holiday makers the day of returning from sunny( not this week ) Cornwall, why did it take the authority over 2 hours to get just 1 lane reopened. I came off @ Taunton J25 and the road was shut south as far as i could see. Read more
