Friend of a friend has a one owner 98S 406 1.9 TD LX-S Est with 105,000, FPSH to sell.

I might buy it - he's got an idea it's worth £2750 - but I'm not going to offer thet, thinking £2,300 is nearer the mark.

Any thoughts? Read more

I'll start lower then - just hope he's not too offended.
The LX-S has AC, and at that age, I'm not
convinced that the higher specs are worth paying for/worrying about.

On the contrary I'd say the opposite, the older a car gets the more worth it it can be. New, the premium of an Executive over an LX was thousands of pounds. At 7 years old, it's barely a hundred quid, if anything. I paid about the same as an LX for my Ghia X Mondeo despite a gulf of some £6000 on list price when new.

Hi All, I'm off to the Vendee area of France soon and was wondering if anyone can tell me if the motorway from Rouen to Le Mans is open yet? I think its the E402 or is it the A28? I have previously taken the N138 which runs parallel to the proposed/new motorway. Thanks In Advance. Read more

I've done the N138 from Alencon to Le Mans late at night when there is no other traffic about. It's not so bad then: but during the day when the trucks are out and about it is a different story.

I arrived at Le Mans (for Testing Weekend) at about 01:30 so thought I'd do a lap or two of the Public parts of the track. Hundaires (sp - Mulsanne to most) straight was wonderful - then through Indianapolis way too fast. I forgot about the 90 degee turn at the White House (Maison Blanche) and wasted a good few mill of my tyres as a result.

When you leave Le Mans after the 24h race the local people come out to wish the English farewell. There are whole families out for the late summer afternoon, picnics etc, waving at the Brit cars as they pass. It's obviously some kind of tradition, that would go on for over 90 miles, in every village you pass through. The new motorway will certainly be quicker but will deprive the locals (and us) of the fun of that part of the jourey...

Have you seen the latest "Which" magazine car reliability report?

Excellent:
Ford / Honda / Hyundai / Lexus / Mazda / Suzuki / Toyota

Good:
Daihatsu / Kia / Mitsubishi / Nissan / Proton / Subaru

Average:
Chrysler / Daewoo / Jaguar / Jeep / Mini / Porsche / Skoda / Smart / Vauxhall

Poor:
Alfa Romeo / Audi / BMW / Citroen / Fiat / Mercedes Benz / Peugeot / Renault / Saab / Seat / Volvo / VW

Oh how the mighty have fallen!

_____

A few anomalies, the RX8 and C-Max suffered an above average % of Breakdown's where most Volvos, Vauxhalls and VWs were OK regarding breakdowns though clearly suffered in respect of Faults and Niggles, to use the "Which" terminology.

don't think you can just single Ford dealers out - most are pretty useless these days. Think the problem is that as cars have become more technology based the "technicians" knowledge is also now limited to technology so if anything mechanical goes wrong with cars & the testing computer doesn't highlight it then they're stuffed -- & so usually are we !!

There was a recent thread regarding the viability of having cars serviced in France - obviously the fare cost would have to be factored-in.
I'm doing the trip in reverse, and checking prices note that Eurotunnel do a short stay/overnight return fare of £30 (42 euros).
Are there any better deals readily available, without travelling at unsociable hours? Read more

I paid £19 earlier in the year from www.driveline.co.uk - don't know if they are still doing it (I seem to recall it ended in June)

Just been asked to help a friend with a 2 week old Dell PC with a recent AOL Broadband connection.

It is running like a Pentium 60 (it's a 3000) and seizing all the while. Keeps flashing up Norton screens of a "threat" nearly every time you move the mouse. Will not link to its printer... all the usual grief.

I will not allow AOL near our own PC so a bit in the dark but might there be conflict between the XP firewall/Virus progs and Norton plus AOL trying to run similar?

Just a clue where to start from someone who knows the AOL issues would be a great help.

Thanks.

does anybody know whether the weights on a drum affect the balancing of the rear wheels? i'm asking as i have dicovered that one of my drums were badly scored and as a quick fix i went down to my local junk yard and got one off of a cavalier not too dissimilar from mine but the'new'one has weights at designated points on it and mine hasn't. are they there to counter act any imperfections in the drum or are they there for another reason? looking forward to any suggestions as what they are for. The wheel will not be balanced unless it has been balanced, irrespective of the drum.My point was that, while many people only balance the front wheels to avoid vibration at the steering wheel,it is also worthwhile to balance the rear wheels. There is no point in marking the position of the wheel on the hub unless it has been dynamically balanced(on the car).

Today I went to my Grandmothers to help her sell her Ford Ka. It's a 1998 R reg with a whopping 4428 miles under its belt.

I'm sure it's quite common with elderly drivers (I say elderly, but she's only 76) to have low mileages, probably common with 'weekend' sports cars too.

What cars have you come across that have very low mileages considering their age? Probably quite a few Alfas I would imagine. Read more
