July 2005
The handbrake on my dads 2002 325i has recently started sticking on. Its now been to a BMW dealer who says that the handbrake on these has some pads all of their own, and that every now and then your should drive a short way with the handbrake on to clean these as they aren't anything to do with the foot brake and so accumulate crud.
Now I've never heard of this before and neither has my dad and as a result we've now been handed a bill for new pads as he only puts the handbrake on when the cars fully stopped and so the pads were never getting cleaned.
Has anyone else ever heard of this? Read more
Knowingly placed in Discussion, not Technical.
I've hired a VW Shuttle 2.5TDI eight seater for the weekend, but know there are two variants of motor with the 2.5TDI monicker: 130PS with 340Nm and 174PS with 400Nm.
I don't pick the vehicle up until tomorrow morning so don't yet have any driving impressions, but I wondered if there's any way to tell which version I have hired? I guess even the lower powered model is hardly going to be gutless with 340Nm torque but having never driven one before I have nothing to compare with.
I guess however that the differences may be software alone (like is the case with Volvo's current generation 2.4D and D5 motors fitted to P2 platform - S60/V70/S80 - cars in different markets) but ask the question in case not.

I had a 100 PS Vauxhall Movano CDTi and I couldn't
believe how quick it was (Hugo will agree, he has the
same vehicle in his Nissan Primastar) and I'm sure even a
130 PS engine in the Transporter will cruise all day long
at 85 with bags of torque and acceleration in reserve.
I'll agree with the comments about the Movano CDTI, we hired 2 for a week to drive from Nuremberg tothe Austrian border.6 speed box and plenty of poke gave good autoban speeds, thats 7 up with kit.Shame it did not come with winter tyres( as asked) and we had to buy 2 sets of chains.
Hi all
I have a problem with my xantia 1.8 16v air con
Basically the on/off light faded and I took the switch off to clean the bulb, no problems all working, as i took put the switch back about 75% of the way it was still working fine, then i put the switch back all the way and it stopped, i.e. no click from the compressor and the fans aren?t spinning now.
The fans work normally when the thermostat opens.
Obviously this sound like an electrical problem, ive checked all the fuses all ok.
The air con switch itself lights up when you switch it on but there is no other activity, any ideas please or anyone in the Leicester area can help, many thanks.
I should not have bothered touching it, it was working fine before!

Wouldn't they have sent out a fine if it was the other way around ?
Just seen for sale at a local main (Nissan) dealer - 944 auto.
Its up for £2900. Have not seriously thoght about it but have toyed with the idea of having a fun / weekend car for a while now.
The car has covered 157K and has the biggest history file I have ever seen. Bodywork looks good other than nearside sill rusting. paint not broken but bubbling from underneath.
Don't know the year but guessing at early / mid eighties (It has a dateless plate - IBZ****)
Would I be wasting money on something like this or could I reasonably run it for a year or two (hundred or so miles every other weekend) and get a chunk of my money back.
Just like the idea it is being sold by a large dealer and hopefully warranty.
Probaly just looking for you to tell me not to go near it. Read more
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this post. A lot of useful info has been lost.
But I did not go for this car in the end. (It's still for sale).
I really quite like the 944 though and will be keeping an eye out (possibly for a nice S2 (MANUAL)) once I get my main mode of trasport sorted.
Thanks again for all the help.

If I were you, I'd keep it another year or two and then trade in - you've lost £4.5k or so now, but with 70 or 80k up at 3 - 4 years old you'll only lose another £1,500 at most and the car shouldn't really start becoming unreliable unless it is already.
Gutless cars - underpowered and downright dangerous at times, here's my starter for 10....
Reminded me on the unusual sightings thread of one of the most gutless cars I can remember - a hillman avenger 1250, along with the sierra 1300, anybody for anymore?
Recently I had the displeasure to drive a nissan people carrier - I deliberatley have forgotten the name, scarily slow... Read more
Jetta 1300 Formel E - even heavier than a Golf and only 55 bhp to lug it around - my daughter's Punto has that and must weigh 50% of the Jetta.
Good car though, and the boot saved us from a nasty bump from a well known actor luvvie who managed to crumple the boot floor while getting to close in his Corrado.
Things don't seem to be geting any better for FIAT- their June 2005 sales figures were down a massive 62% compared with June 2004 to just 2412 units, and the figure for the year to date sales isn't much better, having declined by 53%.
Now this surprises me because I thought the new Panda had been a major success sales-wise? Read more

The Wessex RS Owners' Club will be having their annual meet that Beaulieu in the New Forest on Sunday 17/07/05. The club invites all the other RSOCs in the south of England to attend, with a good turnout.
There's normally representation from other marques too. Last year saw BMWOC, Alfa Owners and Peugeot Sport representation, with some rather fine cars on display. Highlight for me last year was the GT40 and RS200 on display (particularly when the GT40 was fired up).
Whilst there are usually some kev-cars to be seen, there are also some lovely concours cars to view. I'll be there, offering my pie-enhanced services to the Wessex RSOC tug of war team (we won last year) and fielding abusive remarks about Alfa, Diesel and Estate from all and sundry.
So if you fancy a day out at Beaulieu, here's your excuse.
