Latest (July) copy of Which? has article in which it says that two major manufacturers have changed the basis of paying dealer bonuses from number of cars sold to results of customer satisfaction surveys. Sounds a good idea at first glance, but as the results come from showroom experience, the charge is that few cars will be sold via on-line brokers as they won't count toward the bonus - one of the manufacturers denies this will be the case. One broker well known to this site is most unhappy...

As per site policy, no names, but Which? will be in your local library shortly!

PS It also has a case where its lawyers succesfully persued a claim that a car was of unsatisfactory quality after its belt tensioner failed at 64k/4 years (service manual recommended 80k). Read more

Happy Blue!

Now your last comment is very interesting. My copy came today, but not got round to reading it yet.

Seems travel chaos is in order tommorrow yet again on the M25 as the motorway is closed in both directions until wednesday evening and will probably involve me again through no fault of my own.

A van left smouldering on the hard shoulder is to blame.

Surely a massive over reaction? this should have been dealt with in a better way?

Acetylene will explode with no external stimuli above 24psi. For this reason it is stored in solution with acetone, which stabilises the acetylene.

Now subject a cylinder, at much higher than 24psi, to fire. There is a danger that the cylinder may have leaked, or that the acetylene and the acetone have separated.

Acetylene has a calorific value of 56,000 per m3 (in free state) versus petrol at 48,000 per litre. There are a hell of a lot more m3 of gas in a cylinder than petrol in the average car fuel tank.

Now a car fire is a problem for an hour or so, but once the flames are out and the metal cooled, no more danger.

Acetylene is another matter. Once heated and in a possibly damaged cylinder, it could go "pop" in a most spectacular fashion. Very spectacular indeed.

I've tried searching for the answer but cannot find a scenario like ours.

Basically, step-son has a car with about 2 months insurance to run. He then intends getting rid of car before college but wants the one years no claims. He's asked his mother can he transfer the remainder of the policy to cover her car for the remaining month - clutch gone on his and it needs taxing.

Now I've said you cannot have two policies on one car. His is third party and her's fully comp. Am I right?

Thwn again, I don't think the remaining month of cover would be enough to insurance a 2001 Seicento when his is a H Reg Citroen AX 1.4d even if it was possible.

Note the key her is that (A) he keep his policy running for the remaining month and (B) he's like to drive the car but he's too young to be named driver on wife's policy.

Have I missed something in my absence from the UK? Even though you now have to have the registration of a vehicle named on an insurance certificate, I thought there was still an insurance element for the driver or it would not be possible to drive cars you don't own on the strength of your own insurance policy. So nothing wrong with Blue's suggestion about letting it run for a month on an unused vehicle. I appreciate we are talking third party so maybe no other vehicle clause.

I have recently had a new catalytic converter fitted to my Peugout 406 2.0 HDI estate and immediately on driving off noticed that there was a lot of vibration at 2 - 2 500rpm affecting the trim, pedals, rear view mirror goes blurred etc. The exhaust company couldn't find an obvious solution so ordered and fitted another cat - but I still have exactly the same problem. I have just had the car looked at my by my local Peugout dealer - they looked at the exhaust system and couldnt see any contact with the car body. They are suggesting there may be a resonance set up in the cat which is transferring to the car and recommended having the genuine Peugout part fitted at 3 times the cost of the current part.

Anyone heard of this sort of problem and any suggestions as to how it might be overcome short of changing to the Peugout part?

Dave will be useful in this thread but anyone can join in.

Often, I'll pretend I have a wad of cash and think, "What would I go out and buy now".

One that keeps coming up is, believe it or not, the Vectra. (I'm realistic with my fantasies) Now, I'm always thought they got their act together with the new Vectra and thought it was just as good as the Mondeo.

I particularly like the sportier models like the SRi etc which have the tinted lights front and back. In this respect I think it beats the Mondeo hands down (and this is coming from Ford's number one fan remember...actually - number 2 fan if you include Michael)

However, two things happened today which made me change my mind. I sat in one. This was an SXi and I must say, I wasn't too impressed. The driver's side looks ok but the centre is just a slab of plastic with a great big ugly clock. Do the versions with Sat Nav make this look a but better?

Secondly, my mate's Dad has leased both a Veccy and a Mondeo and says it's like driving two completely different class of cars. The Vectra is good in a straight line and quite comfy but loeses it on the bends.

Now I'm eager to point out, this is in no way a Vauxhall bashing thread - quite the opposite. I'm a fan of the quick ones and have always thought externally, they're prety nice but the drive has let them down and in most cases the interior. However, I'm getting a bit bored of the Mondeo now. 3 of my mate's Dad's have bought one in one guise or another and the only quickie is the ST220. Apart from subtle changes, they're all much of a muchness. The Vectra on the other hand looks pretty good in my opinion especially the 3.2 SRi :-)

I'm also eager to point out that neither the Vectra or Mondeo is my "dream car". Nor am I going to suggest one for every single query. But sooner or later, I'm going to be in the position of getting a quick car (later...very much later!!) and I'd always considered one of the quick Vectras (even the MV6 Omega) but I've been put off by my mate's Dads' comments.

Any thoughts?

Everybody is talking about half price Rovers and all that, but I don't see 'em anywhere?
If I want something specific, like an Automatic Diesel MG ZTT, reversing sensors, cruise control, whatever, where are they?
Still stuck in an airfield, somewhere?
When do they come out?
Or did I miss 'em already?
Thanks,

I know alot have been shifted through closed sales so unless your in the trade it will be difficult to source without using an auction buyer.

I very much doubt you will get such an exact spec though - maybe a diesel Tourer but highly unlikely to get auto with a few other little options.

I know that there has been some attempts at changing steering wheels like the wheel used in Knight Rider etc.

But all a steering wheel needs to do is turn the wheels left or right. Could we not do this with a simple joystick, say for example resting on the driver's door. Obviously there would be some sort of feedback through it but how far away do you think we are before the steering wheel is done away with or radically changed? Read more

Perhaps "plug", might have to do a bit of tweaking to achieve "play".

Since 1996 Renault have extended their change intervals for fuel filters from 18000 to 36000 miles. Is this a result of clean, modern fuels or are they just stretching the interval for the sake of cost ? Can I risk the fuel filter on my 2002 Megane dCi for 36000 mls? I change the oil and filter at 6000 anf the air filter at 12000 myself.

There is no magic here - for a specified filter (entrapment area) the change interval simply depends on your fuel consumption, mileage and the cleanliness of the fuel.

If Renault have done the usual trick of stretching service intervals to breaking point without changing the fuel filter type, be careful. On the other hand, my own experience indicates that fuel bought on the "high street" from a fast mover is nowadays very clean, so you might just be OK to 36k miles. From memory, the filter is not overly large on this engine, so 20k might be safer. Whatever else you do, drain the water out of it every service. Ususally there isn't any, but one day you might get a surprise,

Can anyone enlighten me as to why every time I change page on this site I get the noise that sounds like a single bang on a bongo drum? It does not happen on other sites.

I think its something to do with the pop-up guard software blocking the pop-ups as you change page as there is a few on this site perhaps?
