I need to buy a nearly new car sometime before next march (06)
I know what I want - 1.6 or 2.0 diesel Cmax - not up for debate.
I keep cars for a long time typically 10 years and that is the last time I bought at auction so I'm a bit rusty.

I'd like to buy as cheaply as possible. So when is there a dip in the market?
Is it:
Summer - because everyone is thinking about their holiday
New reg time? - before because everyone is hanging out for newer reg to drop in price or after the new reg cos the market is full of trade ins
Cold wet days in January or November? because no one likes the time of year
Christmas time - because everyone is spending their money on Xmas.

or does this all average out to mean there is no real 'best time'

I'd value your thoughts and experience

Hi

This is a problem which I only experience occasionally, but which still doesn't sound nor feel great.

Basically, when warm, under load, and at low revs, the engine sometimes makes a 'popping' sound accompanied by a sudden jerk. Is this the engine backfiring? If so, what's causing it?

The engine otherwise runs fine with no apparent misfire.

Thanks,

Well it eventually got worse to the point when I replaced the spark plugs (only a year old mind you!) for NGK ones which improved things a lot, but was still there. Finally plunged for new HT leads from Fords, which incidently were the same price as the Halfords ones. Seems to have cured it, fingers crossed. That's the last time I'm buying branded HT leads which are cheaper than Halfords own!

Apparently VW is planning to add another maker to its portfolio:-

VW even beat Rover to China - some of its cars
are assembled there including the Passat.

Rather China beat VW to Rover.

I started a thread a few weeks ago about the best cars for legroom, but I'm wondering about the old shaped Golfs. I am looking at going to see a G reg 1.3 Golf and want to know what they are like for legroom?

It sounds good. I think 100,000 miles on the clock is good for a Golf isn't it? Read more

That's something I'll have to look at Roberson, but I think the smoke, even though there was a small amount, was a bit too white and dense to be steam.

I was reading on the Bangernomics site that the Oil breather can be an awkward job to do, although I think it's worse for Polos. Also I got some advice from a VW Mechanic to just run the car as normal and check the levels once a week. I'm not sure about that though. I suppose it depends if the smoke gets worse, but if I knew there was a problem with the breather I'd rather just get it done straight away.

If you are thinking of going to London, then don't.

The entire underground is closed whilst an explosion is investigated. There are at least injuries.

Not only is the underground closed, every cab / bus is full and the trains are suffering as well.

I think it's now time to wind up this thread.

I'm sure all our thoughts and sympathy go toward all those affected and the relatives of the killed and injured. not to mention the wonderful job the emergency services are doing.

It goes without saying that thoughts of yesterdays events won't be forgot about, but it also shows by the way people have gone about their business as normal today that terrorists won't have the final say.

Hello all,

I am off to Silverstone this weekend for the GP, but is there any tips on where the best place to park is? I know there are numerous carparks around the perimeter but is there any park and rides or is it a case of just having to queue to get in the main car parks?

BTW I am hoping to view the Grand Prix at Club corner.

Thanks Read more

Hi all,

My Golf has ASR, not ESP. It kicks in fine when the wheels are about to spin in the wet on straight roads etc - but if I throw it into a roundabout a little too fast, and the back starts to go, ASR does absolutely nothing at all, it doesn't even come on - is this normal? Is it the later ESP that would help the car out in a skid or do I need to take yet another trip to the dreaded VW dealership?

MY tt has esp. It seemed to work on all wheels perhaps because it was quattro.
Brilliant system, stopped me from going into a hedge on entering a corner rather too quickly.
I understand on a track it is a nightmare.

Just parked my daughter's car in front of the house and have put a scrape in the body-coloured bumpers. My own Terrano has so many scrapes on its Silver bumpers and most have appeared from nowhere. New car that I have ordered has plain plastic bumpers. Hoorah! Let's put an end to painted bumpers. Read more

Not so with My Mondeo. The bumper is a thin lightweight
skin with air behind it.
So so easy it split as I found out. Just notice
how many Mondeos have a patch of gaffer tape on them.
Parking sensors are on my to do list.

Brings back fond(?) memories of Maestro bumpers - made of eggshell i'm sure.

From channel 4's 4car site. It appears road charging using satellite tracking is still far away! Read more

"IMO they sometimes announce these crackpot schemes to make everyone rebel against it"

I disagree there. Without getting political, how many "new" schemes has this Government announced as the saviuor of the problem and then quietly dropped when it does not work. You can argue they should be given the benefit for trying or alternatively they should think before they announce.

They appear to have a touching faith in technology (ID cards for example, NHS system costing £billions and not working) but appear not to follow their own rules in testing before new systems are introduced.

I think announcing in advance to have a debate is good. Announcing in advance and refusing to admit any possible failure is muppetry imo.

Personally I think roadcharging on a national scale is far too complex to ever implement. A trial scheme in a minor city first would be the sensible and least costly approach....
